When to Use

Use this skill when the request calls for substantive depth, original argument, and narrative craft that operates beyond what a standard blog post can accomplish.

Trigger scenarios:

• The user wants a 1500-3000 word article that argues a specific thesis, not merely explains a topic -- the piece must take a position the reader can disagree with
• The user asks for a "deep dive," "feature," "flagship content piece," or "comprehensive guide" that requires synthesizing multiple evidence types (data, case studies, expert frameworks, historical context)
• The user is producing thought leadership content where the article's job is to shift the reader's mental model, not simply inform them of existing knowledge
• The user needs to establish authority or credibility in a domain -- the article is the proof of expertise, not a summary of it
• The user has a complex topic where the honest treatment requires exploring tradeoffs, counterarguments, and nuance that would be squeezed out of shorter formats
• The user's topic has a compelling narrative thread -- a problem that escalates, a misconception worth dismantling, a historical arc worth tracing, or a tension worth resolving
• The user is building a content hub where this article functions as a pillar piece that shorter satellite content will link to and draw from

Process

Step 1: Extract the Essential Inputs Before Writing a Word

The single most common failure in long-form article writing is starting too early. Before drafting anything, establish the following through direct questions or by inferring from context:

• The thesis, not just the topic. "Artificial intelligence in hiring" is a topic. "AI hiring tools replicate the biases of the humans who trained them, making them worse than a well-designed structured interview" is a thesis. Push the user from topic to thesis by asking: "What is the one thing you want the reader to believe after finishing this that they probably do not believe now?"
• Target audience's prior knowledge level. An article for informed generalists (readers of The Atlantic, Wired, Bloomberg Businessweek) requires more context-setting than one for domain practitioners who already know the jargon. Misread this and you either condescend to experts or lose generalists in paragraph two.
• The reader's journey. What does the reader currently believe about this topic? What do you want them to believe, feel, or do after reading? The delta between those two states is the article's job.
• Evidence inventory. Ask the user what they have: proprietary data, personal experience, access to experts, third-party research, case studies. Long-form articles derive authority from specific evidence -- generic claims are the enemy. If the user has nothing specific, you will need to build the article around frameworks and disclosed reasoning rather than data you cannot verify.
• Word count target and section depth. Default to 2200-2500 words. At 1500 words, you can develop three sections deeply. At 3000 words, you can carry four to six sections with genuine evidence in each. Knowing the target prevents padding and prevents underdeveloped sections that needed more room.
• Publication context. Where will this appear? A company blog, a major industry publication, a personal newsletter, a LinkedIn article? Publication context changes headline conventions, opening style, assumed authority, and acceptable formality level.
• Voice calibration. Ask for a reference article the user admires or has written before. If none exists, default to the register of longform journalism: confident authority, concrete evidence, narrative connective tissue, no academic hedging, no corporate speak.

Step 2: Select the Article Architecture Before Outlining Sections

Long-form articles fail structurally when writers list sections without deciding how the sections relate to each other. The structure is an argument about how ideas connect. Choose one of these load-bearing architectures before building the outline:

• Thesis-Complication-Resolution. State the thesis, introduce evidence that complicates or challenges it, then resolve the complication with a deeper or more nuanced version of the thesis. Best for topics where conventional wisdom is partially right but importantly wrong. This is the most common architecture for thought leadership.
• Problem-Mechanism-Solution. Establish the problem with specificity, explain the mechanism that causes it (most articles skip this and go straight to solutions, making them weak), then present the solution as logically following from the mechanism. Best for practical how-to content with genuine depth.
• Narrative Arc. A historical or chronological story that carries an argument. An event, a shift, an era -- used to show that the current situation is not inevitable, it was created by specific decisions. Best for industry retrospectives, origin stories, or explanations of why something is the way it is.
• Reframe. Take a familiar concept and show it is actually about something else entirely. "Leadership is not about charisma, it is about information architecture." The article's job is to make the new frame more useful than the old one. Best for contrarian or counterintuitive angles.
• Escalating Stakes. Start with a small, accessible observation and systematically widen the implications until the reader realizes the stakes are larger than they thought. Best for topics that seem narrow but connect to larger forces.

Once the architecture is selected, build a section-by-section outline with one sentence per section describing what argument it makes (not just what it covers). If a section cannot be summarized as an argument, it is still a topic -- push until it becomes a claim.

Step 3: Write the Opening 250 Words as If They Are the Only Words That Matter

Research on reading behavior shows that the majority of long-form readers who abandon an article do so in the first 300 words. The opening is not an introduction -- it is an audition. Follow these technical requirements:

• Open with a specific scene, data point, named example, or precise moment -- never an abstraction. "Communication matters in organizations" is an abstraction. "In March 2023, a hospital in Phoenix spent $2.3 million fixing a medication error that a nurse had flagged in a Slack message that her manager never saw" is a specific that earns the abstraction that follows.
• Do not state the topic directly in the first sentence. Open with evidence, then let the topic emerge from the evidence. This creates pull rather than pushing information at the reader.
• Establish a central question or tension by sentence four or five. The reader should feel an itch they want the article to scratch -- a discrepancy between what they expected and what you have just shown them.
• State the thesis explicitly no later than the end of the first section (the opening few paragraphs before the first subhead). In journalism this is called "the nut graf" -- the paragraph that tells the reader what the article is about and why they should care. It usually begins with a turn: "This is not just about X. It is about Y." Do not bury this or hold it for the end as a reveal. Long-form readers who do not know where they are going abandon the journey.
• The opening must earn every word. At 2000 words, the opening represents 10-15% of the article's total length. Every sentence must add either specificity, context, or momentum. Cut any sentence that could be removed without the reader noticing.

Step 4: Build Each Body Section as a Self-Contained Argument

Each body section should be able to answer three questions: What does this section claim? What evidence does it provide? How does it connect to the section before and the section after? The section fails if it cannot answer all three.

• Open each section with a topic sentence that makes a claim, not an announcement. "Now we turn to the role of incentives" is an announcement. "Incentives are where culture actually lives, and most companies have designed theirs to reward exactly the behaviors they publicly discourage" is a claim.
• Use a different evidence type in each section. If Section 2 uses research data, Section 3 should use a case study or narrative example. If Section 3 uses historical context, Section 4 should use direct analogy or framework. Evidence variety prevents the article from feeling monotonous and demonstrates argument breadth.
• The ideal section length is 350-600 words at the 2000-2500 word count target. Shorter sections feel underdeveloped; longer sections lose focus. When a section wants to go long, split it rather than padding it -- the second half usually contains a second claim that deserves its own heading.
• Vary sentence length deliberately. Long sentences carry complex ideas and show connection between concepts. Short sentences land emphasis. Three long sentences followed by one short one is a rhythm that works. Sentences of identical length produce a numbing effect that causes readers to skim.
• Mark sourcing gaps explicitly. When the argument needs a specific data point, quote, or expert perspective that you do not have, insert [EXPERT SOURCE: organizational behaviorist specializing in incentive design] or [DATA NEEDED: retention rate comparison pre/post implementation] rather than fabricating specificity or leaving the claim unsupported. This makes the article honest about its evidentiary gaps and shows the user exactly where their reporting work is needed.
• Transitions between sections should be narrative, not mechanical. "In the next section, we will explore..." is a navigation sign, not a transition. Instead, close a section with a sentence that creates forward momentum: plant a question the next section will answer, or introduce a tension the next section will resolve.

Step 5: Write the Counterpoint Section Without Strawmanning It

Every long-form article that argues a thesis must contain a section that takes the opposing view seriously. This is not optional and not a courtesy -- it is the mechanism that makes the thesis credible. An argument that ignores counterevidence is a polemic, not an article.

• Present the strongest version of the counterargument, not the easiest one to refute. If your thesis is that remote work improves productivity, do not counter with "some people say remote workers are lazy" -- counter with the legitimate research showing that creativity, spontaneous collaboration, and mentorship suffer in fully distributed environments.
• Give the counterpoint its own evidence. A counterargument presented as "some critics argue..." with no supporting evidence is a strawman. The counterpoint needs a data point, an example, or a named perspective it can stand on.
• Then advance the thesis by engaging with the counterpoint rather than dismissing it. The best responses to counterarguments say "yes, and here is the condition under which that concern is valid -- and here is why the thesis holds even when that condition is met."
• Position the counterpoint section two-thirds to three-quarters of the way through the article, not at the end. Ending on the counterpoint undermines the thesis. Ending on the thesis after addressing the counterpoint demonstrates it survived scrutiny.

Step 6: Write the Closing Without Summarizing

The closing is the hardest section to write well and the easiest to write badly. Most article closings are summaries disguised as conclusions. The reader does not need a recap -- they just read the article. A closing that summarizes is a sign the writer did not trust the reader and did not know how to end.

• Use callback structure. Return to the specific scene, example, or data point that opened the article -- but now the reader sees it differently because of everything they have read. This creates the feeling of completion and demonstrates that the article's argument was built on a foundation, not assembled from parts.
• Crystallize the key insight in one precise sentence. This sentence is the article's thesis in its sharpest form -- the version that could appear as a pull quote. Write it, then work backward to make sure the article actually earned it.
• Look forward, not backward. The closing's second job is to tell the reader what to do with what they now know -- implications, predictions, recommended actions, or a question the article opens rather than closes. The best endings are openings to the next problem.
• Keep the closing under 250 words. The article's momentum has been building; a long closing dissipates it. Short endings hit harder.

Step 7: Review for Structural Integrity, Not Just Grammar

After drafting, read the article end-to-end asking these specific questions:

• Does every section advance the argument, or do some sections just add information? Adding information is not the same as advancing an argument. If a section can be removed without weakening the thesis, cut it or fold it into an adjacent section.
• Is the evidence variety maintained? Check that no two consecutive sections use the same evidence type. If they do, restructure.
• Does the narrative thread hold? Read only the opening sentence of each section in sequence. They should tell a coherent story. If they do not, the architecture is broken.
• Does the opening promise get delivered? Whatever question or tension the opening established -- is it answered? If the article wandered away from that promise, either redirect it or update the opening.
• Is there a single sentence that, if cut, would make the argument weaker? Every sentence should meet that test. Sentences that fail it are padding.
• Where are the thin spots? Sections that feel like they are going through the motions rather than genuinely developing an idea. These are the sections that will cause readers to skim. Either deepen them with specific evidence or compress them.

Step 8: Final Copy Edit With Long-Form Specific Checks

• Read every paragraph's first sentence aloud. These are the highest-traffic words in the article -- readers skim them as an orientation layer. They must all be strong.
• Check that no two consecutive paragraphs begin with "The," "This," or "It." Repetitive paragraph openings signal monotony.
• Search and destroy: "very," "really," "quite," "in order to," "it is important to note," "it should be mentioned," "as we discussed." These are filler and hedging language that weakens authority.
• Verify that all claims that need evidence have it. Claims without evidence are assertions; assertions without track records are guesses.
• Confirm the headline is specific and evocative -- not a topic label. "The Future of Work" is a label. "The Four-Day Work Week Is Not a Perk -- It Is an Operational Bet" is a headline.

Output Format

Deliver the article in this structure. Do not include meta-commentary, section labels like "[Opening]," or production notes in the final deliverable. Those belong in a separate brief to the user.

Rules

1. Never open with a generalization, temporal claim, or rhetorical question. "In today's fast-paced world," "In recent years," "As we navigate an increasingly complex landscape," and "Have you ever wondered why...?" are automatic credibility destroyers. The opening must begin with something specific enough to be false -- a scene, a number, a named entity, a precise moment.

2. The thesis must be arguable -- someone must be able to disagree with it. "Remote work has both advantages and disadvantages" is not a thesis. "Remote work systematically disadvantages people in the first three years of their careers, and the companies ignoring this are quietly hollowing out their talent pipelines" is a thesis. If a reasonable person cannot push back on the thesis, the article has no argument.

3. Never summarize in the closing. The closing exists to crystallize, callback, and look forward. "In conclusion, we have seen that X, Y, and Z..." is not a closing -- it is an index. Write the closing as if the reader has absorbed everything and now needs one precise insight and one forward-looking thought.

4. Never fabricate specificity. If you do not have the specific data point, case study, or expert quote the argument needs, mark it with [DATA NEEDED: ...] or [EXPERT SOURCE: ...]. A fabricated statistic that gets fact-checked destroys the article's credibility; a marked gap is honest and actionable.

5. No two consecutive sections may use the same evidence type. Data followed by case study followed by framework followed by historical context. Varying evidence type is not stylistic preference -- it is how the article demonstrates that the thesis holds across multiple forms of examination.

6. Every section heading must state a claim, not a topic. "The Role of Technology" is a topic heading. "Technology Solves the Wrong Problem" is a claim heading. Claim headings keep the writer accountable to making an argument in every section, not just covering material.

7. The counterpoint section must present the strongest opposing argument, not the most convenient one. Strawmanning is visible to any reader who knows the domain. If you cannot find a genuinely strong counterargument, you have not looked hard enough -- or the thesis needs more nuance.

8. Pad nothing. Every sentence must either introduce new information, advance an existing argument, or provide evidence. Transition sentences that restate what was just said ("Now that we understand the problem, let us turn to the solution") are padding. Readers notice padding and accelerate through it -- the article loses them.

9. The headline must be specific and evocative. It should gesture at the thesis, not label the topic. Test the headline against this rule: if the headline would also work for an article arguing the opposite thesis, it is too generic. Headlines like "Why Culture Initiatives Fail" pass. "Culture Matters" fails. "What Your Company's Culture Actually Is" barely passes. "Culture Is an Output, Not an Input -- and Most Companies Have the Causality Backwards" passes strongly.

10. Maintain consistent register from opening to close. Shifting from journalistic authority to academic hedging mid-article breaks the reader's trust. If the article begins with narrative authority, every section must maintain that register. The most common register break is the counterpoint section, where writers suddenly become tentative -- "some might argue," "it is possible that," "one could suggest." State counterarguments with the same confidence as the original thesis.

11. At 1500 words, run three deeply developed sections, not five thin ones. Word count is not evenly distributed across sections. Allocate more words to the sections carrying the most important evidence, not to the sections that appeared on the outline first. The outline is a hypothesis about structure; the draft reveals where the argument actually lives.

12. Offer the user a sourcing brief alongside the draft when evidence gaps exist. If the article requires expert quotes, proprietary data, or specific case studies that would significantly strengthen the argument, list them in a post-draft sourcing brief rather than leaving the user to discover the gaps during editing. This is a production service, not just a writing service.

Edge Cases

The user provides a topic but no thesis. Ask the user: "What do you want the reader to believe after reading this that they probably do not believe now?" If the user cannot answer, suggest three possible theses -- one explanatory ("here is why this happens"), one contrarian ("the conventional wisdom here is wrong because..."), and one predictive ("this is where this is heading and why that matters") -- and ask them to choose or combine. If the user defers entirely, select the contrarian angle. It is the hardest to write but produces the most distinctive article, and distinctiveness is the primary competitive advantage of long-form content.

The topic is genuinely too broad for one article. A topic like "the future of healthcare" or "how to build a great company culture" contains enough material for a book. Narrow by asking: "What is the one thing about this topic that is most misunderstood by the audience who needs to read this?" Then write the article about that misunderstanding. If the user insists on breadth, propose a pillar-and-satellite structure: one 2500-word pillar article that frames the overall argument, and three to five 800-1000 word satellite pieces that develop individual sub-arguments. This is superior content strategy and produces better articles.

The user has a very strong opinion and wants validation, not argument. Long-form articles that merely validate the author's existing view without engaging counterevidence are not thought leadership -- they are advocacy. Gently surface the strongest counterargument anyway and explain that engaging it makes the thesis more credible, not less. Readers who already agree with the thesis are not the primary audience -- the article's job is to persuade the skeptical middle.

The user wants to integrate many statistics and data points. Data dumping is one of the most common long-form failures. The rule is: one well-contextualized data point per section is more persuasive than five data points dropped in sequence. Contextualization means telling the reader what the data means and why it matters to the argument -- not just presenting the number. "73% of employees report feeling disengaged" means little. "73% of employees report feeling disengaged -- a number that has not materially changed in twenty years of Gallup surveys, which tells us that engagement programs are not solving the problem because they are treating symptoms, not causes" means something. When the user provides excessive data, select the two or three most argument-relevant points per section and mark the rest as supplementary.

The target word count is at the extremes (under 1500 or over 3000 words). Under 1500 words: redirect to blog-post-writing. At 1500, you have room for three sections developed to genuine depth. Attempting five sections at 1500 words produces five thin sections, which is worse than a 900-word blog post that develops one idea well. Over 3000 words: before drafting a single piece over 3000 words, strongly recommend splitting into two connected articles -- a Part 1 and Part 2 with a clear connective thesis. If the user insists on one piece, add a linked table of contents at the top, use section breaks visually, and ensure every section has a clear standalone value so readers can navigate. Single articles over 3500 words see dramatically lower completion rates unless the topic is genuinely reference-level (a comprehensive guide that readers return to rather than read once).

The article needs to function simultaneously as thought leadership and SEO content. This is a common request and a genuine conflict. Long-form thought leadership is optimized for argument and persuasion; SEO content is optimized for search intent and keyword placement. Trying to fully optimize for both typically compromises both. The recommendation: write the long-form article for argument and audience first, then apply light on-page SEO (natural keyword integration in headings and opening paragraph, meta description, internal linking recommendations) as a secondary pass. Do not restructure the article's argument to chase search intent -- that converts thought leadership into a long blog post that ranks and bores.

The voice sample provided by the user is significantly weaker than the content requires. Sometimes users provide a reference article that is competent but lacks the authority, specificity, or narrative craft the new article needs. Do not match a weak voice sample faithfully -- it produces a weak article. Instead, note the register (formal/informal, first-person/third-person, journalistic/conversational) and match that register while elevating the execution. If asked, explain that you have preserved the voice's character while strengthening the craft elements that make long-form articles work.

The topic requires the article to cover technical content for a mixed-audience publication. When the audience includes both domain experts and informed generalists -- common for industry publications, executive newsletters, and major media -- use a layering strategy. State the technical claim in plain language, then add a parenthetical or brief explanatory clause that satisfies experts without condescending to them. "Transformer models -- the architecture underlying most modern large language models -- changed this by allowing the model to weigh which parts of an input sequence matter most for a given prediction." The plain statement works for generalists; the technical detail signals to experts that the writer knows the domain.

Culture Is What Happens When Nobody Is Watching the Slide Deck

In 2019, a fintech startup unveiled its new company values at an all-hands meeting. The CEO projected five words onto the screen -- Transparency, Innovation, Ownership, Empathy, Excellence -- and asked every employee to memorize them. The words appeared on mouse pads, Slack channel headers, and conference room walls. Within a year, the same company had fired a whistleblower who reported accounting irregularities to the board. The values were still on the wall when the news broke.

This is not a story about hypocrisy. It is a story about a fundamental misunderstanding of what culture is and how it forms. Culture is not a set of aspirational values declared from the stage. It is the sum of every system, incentive, and decision-making pattern that shapes how people actually behave when no one is presenting a slide deck. Companies that treat culture as an input -- something you design and deploy like a product launch -- almost always fail to build it. Companies that treat culture as an output -- something that emerges from well-designed systems -- succeed without ever printing a values poster.

Stated Values Predict Nothing Without Enforcement Mechanisms

Most culture initiatives begin with a naming exercise. Leadership gathers offsite, identifies four to six words that describe the company they aspire to be, and rolls them out with a communications campaign and branded swag. The exercise feels productive because it produces a tangible artifact: a list of values.

The problem is that values lists are unfalsifiable. Every company claims to value "innovation" and "integrity." No company puts "bureaucracy" and "corner-cutting" on their values poster. The tell is what happens when the values are tested. Does the company that claims to value "ownership" promote the person who flagged a failing project early, or the person who kept delivering short-term numbers while the structural problem compounded? The answers to those questions are the culture. Everything else is aspiration.

The Three Systems That Set the Culture Floor

Three systems shape organizational culture more reliably than any values statement: who gets hired, who gets promoted, and what behavior gets tolerated. These systems send signals that employees read, interpret, and internalize far more efficiently than any memo from the CEO -- because these systems have real consequences and memos do not.

Hiring is culture design, whether treated that way or not. When a company hires primarily for technical output and ignores collaborative behavior, it builds a culture of individually brilliant people who do not share information. Promotion is value revelation. Employees watch who gets promoted with more attention than they give to any all-hands presentation. When the engineer who ships features fastest gets promoted despite leaving technical debt and strained relationships behind them, the company has revealed what it actually values -- speed over sustainability. No "we value quality and collaboration" messaging survives that signal. Employees update their behavior models based on what they observe, not what they are told.

Termination defines the culture floor. The behaviors a company tolerates establish the minimum standard. A team lead who bullies junior engineers but delivers on deadlines is a culture test every week they remain in the role.
