When to Use

Use this skill when:

Process

1. Assess the move scope. Gather baseline information to customize the timeline:

   • Move type: local (same metro area) or long-distance (different city or state)
   • Home size: studio/1BR, 2-3BR, 4BR+
   • Moving method: professional movers, DIY truck rental, hybrid (movers for heavy items, self-pack)
   • Special items: piano, pool table, fragile art, large appliances, vehicles
   • Timeline constraints: lease end date, closing date, work start date
   • Budget range: full-service professional, partial service, DIY

2. Execute the 8-week timeline:

   Week 8 (8 Weeks Before Move)

   Declutter and Downsize:

   • Walk through every room and identify items to sell, donate, or discard
   • Sort into four categories: keep, sell, donate, trash
   • List items for sale online (give them 4-6 weeks to sell before moving)
   • Schedule donation pickup or drop-off for week 6
   • Dispose of hazardous materials that movers will not transport (paint, chemicals, propane tanks) -- check local disposal options

   Begin Research:

   • Get at least 3 moving company quotes (if using professional movers)
   • Research DIY truck rental options and pricing
   • Check if employer offers relocation assistance
   • Review renter's or homeowner's insurance for moving coverage
   • Start collecting free boxes from local stores, online marketplaces, or office buildings

   Week 7 (7 Weeks Before Move)

   Book Services:

   • Book moving company (provide accurate inventory for quote; confirm insurance coverage)
   • OR reserve rental truck (book early, especially for month-end or summer moves)
   • If long-distance: book travel arrangements (flights, hotels, pet transport)
   • Arrange pet care for moving day if needed
   • Request time off from work for packing days and moving day

   Administrative:

   • Notify landlord of move-out date (check lease for required notice period -- typically 30-60 days)
   • If selling home: coordinate with real estate agent on timeline
   • Begin transferring or canceling subscriptions and memberships

   Week 6 (6 Weeks Before Move)

   Packing Begins (non-essential items):

   • Pack items used seasonally or rarely: holiday decorations, books, guest room items
   • Label every box on the top AND at least one side: contents, destination room, fragile indicator
   • Create a box inventory list (numbered boxes with contents summary)

   • Utilities to transfer: electric, gas, water, sewer, trash, internet, cable, phone
   • Update billing address for all utilities at new address

   Continue Packing:

   • Pack remaining non-daily items
   • Disassemble furniture that requires it; bag and label hardware
   • Measure doorways and hallways at the new home to confirm large furniture fits

   Week 3 (3 Weeks Before Move)

   Financial and Administrative Updates:

   • Update address with bank and financial institutions
   • Update address with insurance providers (auto, health, renter/homeowner)
   • Update address with employer and payroll
   • Update voter registration if changing jurisdictions
   • If changing states: research vehicle registration and driver's license requirements

   Continue Packing:

   • Pack remaining items except daily essentials
   • Confirm moving company details (date, time, address, contact person)
   • Plan the loading order (heavy items first, essentials last on truck)

   Week 2 (2 Weeks Before Move)

   Address Changes:

   • Submit change of address with postal service (schedule forwarding to start on moving day)
   • Update address with subscription services (magazines, online shopping default address)
   • Notify important contacts: doctor, dentist, vet, attorney, accountant, school
   • Update online account addresses: e-commerce, streaming, delivery services

   Final Preparations:

   • Confirm moving day logistics: arrival time, parking, elevator reservation (if apartment)
   • Arrange payment for movers (check payment method: cash, check, credit card)
   • Prepare tip for moving crew (standard: $20-40 per mover for local, $40-80 for long-distance, per person)
   • Pack a "moving day essentials" box (see Step 3)

   Week 1 (1 Week Before Move)

   Final Packing:

   • Pack remaining daily items except absolute essentials
   • Clean out refrigerator and freezer (defrost if moving the unit)
   • Drain fuel from lawn equipment if applicable
   • Disconnect and prepare appliances if taking them (washer, dryer: disconnect water lines and secure drums)
   • Charge all devices and portable batteries

   Final Walkthrough:

   • Walk through current home room by room to verify nothing is missed
   • Check all closets, cabinets, attic, basement, garage, and outdoor storage
   • Document the condition of the current home (photos or video for security deposit return)
   • Note any damages to report to landlord vs. pre-existing issues documented at move-in

3. Pack the moving day essentials box. This box goes in your car, not the truck:

   • Important documents: IDs, lease/closing documents, insurance papers, medical records
   • Medications for all household members (enough for 3 days)
   • Phone chargers and laptop
   • Change of clothes for each person (1-2 days)
   • Basic toiletries (toothbrush, soap, toilet paper)
   • Snacks and water bottles
   • Basic tools: screwdriver, hammer, box cutter, tape
   • First-night bedding (sheets, pillows, blankets -- or pack in a clearly labeled bag)
   • Paper towels, trash bags, cleaning supplies for both homes
   • Pet food and supplies if applicable
   • Cash for tips, parking, or unexpected expenses

4. Execute moving day:

   Morning:

   • Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, and cabinet
   • Strip beds and pack bedding last (or in essentials box)
   • Confirm movers have the correct address and access instructions for both locations
   • Reserve parking or elevator at both locations if required
   • Have payment and tip ready for movers

   During the Move:

   • Supervise loading: fragile items identified, heavy items on bottom
   • Check off boxes against your inventory list as they are loaded
   • Keep essentials box, valuables, and important documents with you (not on the truck)
   • Do one final sweep of the current home before leaving

   At the New Home:

   • Arrive before or with the movers if possible
   • Direct placement of boxes and furniture to correct rooms (tape room labels on doors)
   • Verify all items arrived by checking the box inventory list
   • Note any damage immediately (photograph and report to moving company within 24 hours)
   • Set up beds and bathroom essentials first

5. Complete the first-week tasks at the new home:

   Day 1-2:

   • Unpack kitchen essentials (plates, cups, utensils, coffee maker)
   • Unpack bathroom essentials
   • Set up beds and bedrooms
   • Test all utilities (electric, gas, water, internet)
   • Locate the main water shut-off, electrical panel, and gas shut-off
   • Change locks or re-key if you are the new owner (or request from landlord)

   Day 3-5:

   • Unpack living areas and common spaces
   • Set up internet and electronics
   • Locate nearest grocery store, pharmacy, urgent care, and hospital
   • Introduce yourself to immediate neighbors

   Day 5-7:

   • Break down and recycle moving boxes
   • Submit security deposit documentation to previous landlord (photos, forwarding address)
   • Update remaining address changes you may have missed
   • File moving expense records for tax purposes if applicable
   • Schedule any needed repairs or modifications in the new home

Rules

1. ALWAYS use the 8-week timeline structure -- shorter timelines compress tasks but keep the same phases
2. ALWAYS include the moving day essentials box checklist -- this is the single most impactful preparation for moving day comfort
3. Include a budget summary with at least 5 line items in every moving plan
4. ALWAYS include the address change checklist -- missed address changes cause problems for months after a move
5. Label boxes on top AND at least one side -- stacked boxes hide top labels
6. Include the box inventory system (numbered boxes with contents) for moves with 20+ boxes
7. NEVER include specific moving company names or service provider recommendations
8. Include utility transfer timing: disconnect day after move-out, connect day before move-in
9. ALWAYS photograph the condition of the current home before leaving for security deposit documentation
10. Include the first-week task list in every plan -- the move is not complete until the new home is functional

Edge Cases

• Short notice move (less than 4 weeks): Compress the 8-week timeline into the available time. Prioritize in this order: book movers or truck immediately (availability drops sharply on short notice), handle utilities and address changes, then pack. Accept that a short-notice move will be less organized -- focus on getting everything moved safely rather than optimally. Skip the sell/donate phase and pack everything; sort after arrival.

• Long-distance move (different state): Add state-specific tasks: research new state's vehicle registration deadline (typically 30-60 days), driver's license transfer, voter registration, income tax implications of the move (may need to file in two states), and professional license transfers if applicable. Plan for 2-3 day transit time where your belongings are on the road and you need the essentials box. Consider shipping vehicles vs. driving.

• Apartment to apartment move: Add apartment-specific tasks: reserve service elevator on both ends, check for move-in/move-out windows (many buildings restrict to business hours), confirm parking for moving truck (may need permit), check hallway and doorway dimensions, and verify lease requirements for condition at move-out (cleaning, painting, carpet shampooing).

• Move with pets: Add pet-specific tasks: update microchip information with new address, transfer veterinary records, research local vets and emergency animal hospitals near new address, plan for pet containment on moving day (a room, a crate, or a friend's house), and carry vaccination records in the essentials box for boarding or emergency care.

• Downsizing move (larger home to smaller): The declutter phase becomes the primary task. Add furniture measurement planning: measure all furniture, measure all rooms and doorways in the new home, and identify what fits before packing. Sell or donate items that will not fit. Consider temporary storage for items you are unsure about (storage unit for 3 months allows you to live in the space and decide what you actually need).
