Singer who needs dance:

• Add jazz class 1-2x/week (most common audition style)

• Many roles need "movers" not "dancers" - commit fully to what you can do

Dancer who needs voice:

Building Your Audition Book

Your book is your portable toolbox. Organize it with tabs:

Required Sections:

1. Up-tempo - 2-3 fast, energetic songs showing personality and range
2. Ballad - 2-3 slower songs showing emotional depth and vocal beauty
3. Contemporary - Post-2000 musical theater material
4. Classic/Golden Age - Rodgers & Hammerstein through Sondheim era
5. Pop/Rock - If you work in that style (Spring Awakening, Dear Evan Hansen territory)
6. Comedy - At least one song that shows comic timing
7. Wildcard - Something unexpected that shows your unique personality

Selection Criteria:

• Songs must be in YOUR key, not the original cast recording key
• Choose material that matches your type but stretches your range
• Avoid overdone songs (check online lists of "overdone audition songs" yearly)
• Every song should have a clear emotional arc within 16-32 bars
• You should be able to start any song in your book with 30 seconds notice

The 16-Bar Cut

Most auditions request 16 bars. This is roughly 30-45 seconds of music.

Choosing your 16 bars:

• Pick the most emotionally compelling section (often not the beginning)
• It must show vocal range, emotional range, and end strongly
• Mark your cut clearly in your book with highlighted start and end points
• Write the tempo and starting note at the top for the accompanist
• Practice starting cold from your cut point

Audition Day Protocol

Before:

1. Warm up voice at home (20-30 minutes: lip trills, scales, the song lightly)
2. Physical warm-up: stretch, shake out tension, gentle movement
3. Arrive 15-30 minutes early
4. Fill out paperwork completely; have headshot/resume ready
5. Observe the room: who is in the panel, what is the energy?

In the Room:

1. Walk in with energy and confidence, but not manic intensity
2. Slate clearly: "Hi, I'm [name], and I'll be singing [song] from [show]"
3. Hand music to accompanist; point to your start, discuss tempo, and say "thank you"
4. Take a moment to ground yourself before you begin
5. Perform to a point slightly above and behind the panel (unless they ask you to work directly with them)
6. If you make a mistake, recover and commit. They are watching how you handle pressure.
7. Thank the panel. Leave cleanly. Do not apologize or make excuses.

The Dance Call:

1. Stand where you can see the choreographer clearly
2. Mark the combination while learning; go full out when performing
3. Pick up choreography quickly by watching feet first, then adding arms
4. Smile and perform, even while learning
5. If you get lost, keep moving with confidence - never stop and stand

The Callback:

1. Wear the same outfit or similar (they remember you by what you wore)
2. Be prepared to read sides, learn new music, and dance more
3. Make strong, specific character choices in scene work
4. Be directable: if they give an adjustment, implement it immediately and fully
5. Chemistry reads: connect genuinely with the other actor

Rehearsal Process

Table Work (Week 1)

• Read the full script multiple times before first rehearsal
• Research the show's historical and cultural context
• Identify your character's objective in every scene
• Mark your score: note dynamics, tempo changes, fermatas, cuts
• Learn your music before staging begins (this is expected, not optional)

Staging and Blocking (Weeks 2-3)

• Write blocking in pencil (it will change)
• Use standard notation: X = cross, DR = downstage right, etc.
• Motivate every move: know WHY your character crosses
• Stay out of other actors' light
• Find your light: know where the stage lighting hits and play to it

Run-Throughs and Tech (Week 4+)

• Maintain energy in stumble-throughs; they exist to build stamina
• Tech rehearsal is about the crew, not you. Be patient, hit your marks, repeat
• Sitzprobe (first time with orchestra): listen to the orchestra, do not just sing over them
• Dress rehearsal is a performance: full commitment, no stopping

Working with Directors

• Take notes in a small notebook, not on your phone
• Implement notes immediately at next rehearsal
• Ask clarifying questions, but not in front of the full company (save for breaks)
• If you disagree with a direction, try it their way fully first
• "Yes, and" applies to rehearsal: build on what is given

Vocal Health and Stamina

Eight-Show Week Survival:

• Steam inhalation before and after shows (personal steamer or hot shower)
• Hydration: sip water constantly (room temperature, not cold)
• Vocal rest between shows: minimize speaking, no whispering (worse than talking)
• Warm up fully before every performance, even matinees
• Cool down after: gentle humming, descending scales
• No dairy before performing (increases mucus for many people)
• Avoid yelling, smoky environments, and alcohol during runs

When Your Voice Is Tired:

• Mark (sing lightly) in rehearsal if you have a show that night
• Throat Coat tea with honey
• If you are losing your voice: see an ENT, not a general doctor
• Know the difference between tired and damaged. Pain = stop and seek help.

Acting Through Song

Every song is a scene. Apply these acting principles:

1. Objective: What does your character want RIGHT NOW in this song?
2. Obstacle: What is preventing them from getting it?
3. Tactic: How are they using this song to pursue the objective?
4. Arc: How does the character change from the first note to the last?
5. Moment before: What just happened that makes this song necessary?
6. Subtext: What is your character NOT saying?

Ensemble Excellence

Most of your career will be in the ensemble. Excel at it:

• Create a specific character even without a named role
• React truthfully in every moment, even when the audience is not watching you
• Support the leads: your energy fuels their performance
• Master quick changes: practice costume changes until they are automatic
• Track work (covering multiple ensemble parts) shows your versatility
• Understand: there are no small parts. Audiences notice committed ensemble work.

Performance Consistency

• Develop a pre-show ritual that centers you
• Find something new in the show each performance
• Connect with scene partners genuinely every night
• Physical warm-up: the body needs preparation as much as the voice
• Emotional preparation: do not sleepwalk through pre-show; activate the character

The Business Side

• Headshot: Invest in a professional theatrical headshot (not a modeling shot). Update yearly.
• Resume: Format: name, union status, height, vocal range. Then credits (show, role, theater), training, special skills.
• Agent: Build credits first, then seek representation. Agents find you through showcases and strong work.
• Unions: Actors' Equity Association (AEA) in the US. Join when the timing is right - do not rush. Once union, you cannot do non-union work.
• Self-tape auditions: Good lighting, clean background, reader off-camera, high audio quality. This is now standard.
