Process

Purpose

This skill teaches users practical negotiation techniques for everyday financial situations. From salary discussions to reducing bills, every negotiation follows learnable patterns. This skill provides scripts, frameworks, and preparation tools that give users confidence and concrete language for any negotiation.

Questions to Ask the User First

1. What are you negotiating? Salary, raise, purchase price, bill reduction, medical bill, contract, rent, or other?
2. What is the current number? What are you currently paying or being offered?
3. What is your target number? What outcome would make you happy?
4. What is your walk-away point? At what point would you decline the deal entirely?
5. What is your BATNA? (Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement) -- What happens if you do not reach a deal?
6. Relationship importance: Is this a one-time transaction or an ongoing relationship?
7. Timeline: Is there a deadline or urgency?
8. Previous attempts: Have you tried negotiating this before? What happened?
9. Emotional state: How comfortable are you with negotiation on a scale of 1-10?
10. Leverage: What advantages do you bring to this negotiation?

Core Negotiation Frameworks

The BATNA Framework

BATNA = Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement

Your BATNA is the most important concept in negotiation. It is what you will do if this negotiation fails.

The Anchoring Technique

The first number put on the table heavily influences the final outcome. This is called anchoring.

Rules of anchoring:

1. Make the first offer when you have good information about market value
2. Anchor aggressively but credibly (extreme anchors backfire)
3. Always justify your anchor with data or reasoning
4. If the other side anchors first, counter-anchor rather than negotiating from their number

WHEN ASKED ABOUT SALARY EXPECTATIONS EARLY:
"I'd prefer to learn more about the role and responsibilities before
discussing specific numbers. I'm confident we can find something that
works for both sides if the fit is right."

IF PRESSED FOR A NUMBER:
"Based on my research for this role in [location], the market range is
$[low] to $[high]. Given my [X years of experience / specific skills /
unique qualifications], I'd be targeting the [upper portion / $specific]
of that range. But I'm flexible -- I'm most interested in the total

WHEN RECEIVING THE OFFER:

COUNTER-OFFER (after reviewing):

Specific Bill Strategies

Cable/Internet:

Purchase Negotiation Tactics

The Negotiation Toolkit

1. Silence: After making an offer, stop talking. Silence is uncomfortable; let the other side fill it.
2. Flinch: React visibly (but not rudely) to the first price. "Oh, that's more than I expected."
3. Ask, don't demand: "Is there any flexibility on that price?" works better than "I want a discount."
4. Bundle: "If I also get [additional item/service], can you adjust the total?"
5. Walk away: The willingness to walk away is your greatest power. Practice it.
6. Good cop / bad cop (with a partner): "I'd love to do this, but my [spouse/partner/boss] won't agree at this price."
7. The nibble: After agreeing on the main terms, ask for one small extra. "Can you throw in free delivery?"

Items Worth Negotiating

Common Negotiation Mistakes

1. Not negotiating at all -- The biggest mistake. You miss 100% of the negotiations you don't attempt.
2. Accepting the first offer -- The first offer is rarely the best offer. Always counter.
3. Negotiating against yourself -- Make your ask, then wait. Do not lower your own number before they respond.
4. Revealing your bottom line -- Never tell them the least you will accept.
5. Making it personal -- Stay professional and fact-based. Emotions weaken your position.
6. Failing to prepare -- Research and preparation win negotiations, not cleverness.
7. Focusing only on price -- Total value matters: terms, timeline, extras, relationship.
8. Burning bridges -- Negotiate firmly but respectfully. You may work with these people again.
9. Not getting it in writing -- Verbal agreements are easily skipped or reinterpreted.
10. Negotiating when desperate -- If your BATNA is terrible, improve it before negotiating.

Key Rules

1. Never give your number first if you can avoid it (let them anchor)
2. Always negotiate on base salary first (it compounds over your career)
3. Never accept or reject on the spot -- say "Thank you, I would like a day to review"
4. Express enthusiasm throughout -- you want the job AND fair compensation

Edge Cases

• Incomplete information: Ask clarifying questions before proceeding. Do not assume details the user has not provided.
• Out of scope requests: Redirect to appropriate professional resources when the request exceeds educational guidance.
