• The user is a non-birthing partner, grandparent, or support person asking how to help and what their specific role should be
• The user wants to plan postpartum logistics -- meals, visitors, childcare coverage, leave timing -- before the birth rather than scrambling after
• The user is overwhelmed by baby product marketing and wants a clear essentials-only framework
• The user has a specific complicating factor: tight budget, planned cesarean, premature delivery risk, single-parent household, multiples, or a second-plus baby

Do NOT use when:

• The user asks medical questions about pregnancy symptoms, complications, or high-risk conditions -- direct to their OB-GYN or midwife
• The user asks about infant feeding from a clinical or medical perspective (breast anatomy, milk supply issues, tongue tie, formula composition) -- direct to a lactation consultant or pediatrician
• The user is experiencing a mental health crisis postpartum -- direct to their healthcare provider or a crisis line; this skill covers logistics, not mental health treatment
• The user asks about diagnosing or treating a sick newborn -- that is exclusively a pediatrician conversation
• The user needs help processing grief related to pregnancy loss -- use the grief support skill instead
• The user is asking about adoption preparation -- some overlap exists but the timeline, legal tasks, and emotional preparation differ substantially; use the adoption preparation skill if available

Process

Step 1: Establish the Context Variables

Before generating any checklist, collect four pieces of information. These determine which phase to start in, what to skip, and what to add.

• Weeks until due date: This is the primary anchor. Ask directly if not stated. If the user says "I'm 32 weeks," that means approximately 8 weeks remain. If they say "third trimester," default to 12 weeks and note the assumption.
• First baby or subsequent baby: First-time parents need the full gear acquisition and education track. Second or third babies need far less gear focus and more sibling preparation and logistics focus.
• Delivery type (if known): Vaginal delivery vs. planned cesarean section changes the postpartum recovery supplies list and the partner task load significantly.
• Support system: Two-parent household vs. single parent vs. extended family nearby changes the support network planning section entirely.

If the user has not provided all four, use what is given and note assumptions explicitly in the output. Do not refuse to generate a checklist because of missing information -- make reasonable assumptions and flag them.

Step 2: Map to the Correct Phase Entry Point

Use the weeks-until-due-date to determine which phases apply and how urgent each one is:

• 28+ weeks remaining (early third trimester or second trimester): Begin Phase 1 immediately. All phases apply. Leisurely pace is possible.
• 12-27 weeks remaining (mid to late third trimester): Phase 1 should start now and be completed within 2 weeks. Phase 2 begins at week 36. This is the normal entry point.

Step 4: Build the Supplies List with Priority Tiers

• Baby shoes (newborns cannot walk; shoes are decorative only; socks with grips suffice)
• Nursery decor, mobiles, wall art (babies cannot focus beyond 8-12 inches for the first weeks; this is entirely for the parents)
• Diaper pail (a regular small trash can with a lid, emptied daily, is functionally equivalent)

Step 5: Build the Postpartum Logistics Plan

The first week home is the most logistically intense period and the most commonly under-planned. Treat it as a distinct planning domain.

Meals:

• Target 10-15 freezer meals prepared before birth -- casseroles, soups, burritos, pasta dishes in single-meal portions
• Accept every offered meal from friends and family; route them through a meal signup sheet so you do not receive 5 lasagnas on day 3 and nothing on day 8

Sleep division:

Pediatrician appointment:

Before birth:

First week home:

• Handle 100% of non-baby household logistics: cooking, dishes, laundry, groceries, pet care, taking out trash
• Manage the visitor schedule and all visitor communication -- the recovering parent should not have to be the one to say "please leave"
• Take the overnight shift (or a portion of it) as described above

Step 7: Customize for Specific Circumstances

Adjust the standard output based on confirmed situational flags:

For cesarean delivery: Add recovery-specific items to Phase 3 supplies -- high-waisted underwear or postpartum recovery shorts that sit above the incision, a step stool to assist getting into bed, stool softener starting the day after surgery, a pillow to hold against the abdomen when coughing or laughing. The partner's task load in weeks 1-4 is higher because the recovering parent will have a 6-week lifting restriction (nothing heavier than the baby) and significant abdominal pain for the first 7-14 days.

Key additions: double all supply quantities, set up two independent sleep spaces from the start, plan for professional postpartum support (a night doula or postpartum doula is often necessary rather than optional), and consult with the NICU team if prematurity is likely.

Rules

1. Never provide medical advice. Every question about pregnancy symptoms, labor signs, newborn illness, or infant feeding difficulties must be redirected to the appropriate medical professional (OB-GYN, midwife, pediatrician, or lactation consultant). This is a logistics and preparation skill, not a clinical skill.

2. The timeline anchor is mandatory. Every task must have a "when to do this" designation, not just a "what to do" designation. A flat list of tasks is nearly useless for a pregnant person who is tired, overwhelmed, and cannot evaluate urgency on their own.

3. Always separate Tier 1 from Tier 2 from nice-to-have. The baby product industry generates approximately $12 billion annually in the United States by convincing new parents that everything is essential. Clarity on what is actually required versus what is convenience versus what is decorative is one of the highest-value outputs this skill provides.

4. Phase 4 (first week home) must always be included. Most baby preparation content stops at birth. The first week home is the most logistically and emotionally intense period for most families. Omitting it is a significant failure of the skill.

5. Car seat rules are non-negotiable. 9. The partner/support person track must be a separate, specific list. Merging partner tasks with the main checklist results in both being done by the same person. 10. Second and subsequent babies require adjusted checklists. The gear acquisition track for a first baby takes approximately 80% of Phase 1 effort. For a second baby, it takes 20%. Edge Cases
