Organizing Methodologies
Category-Based Decluttering
Many professional organizers recommend sorting by category rather than by room, because belongings of the same type are often scattered across multiple locations. This approach -- popularized by Marie Kondo's KonMari(TM) Method and adopted widely in the organizing profession -- ensures you see the full scope of what you own before making decisions.
Recommended category order (start with easiest decisions, build to hardest):
- Clothing and accessories
- Books and media
- Papers and documents
- General household items (kitchen, bathroom, garage, miscellaneous)
- Sentimental items (last, because you have built decision-making confidence)
For each category:
- Gather ALL items of that type from every room
- Evaluate each item: Does it serve a clear purpose? Does it add value to my life? Would I choose to acquire this today?
- Decide: Keep, Donate, Sell, Trash, or Relocate
- Assign a permanent home to everything you keep

The SPACE Method (Professional Organizers)
S.P.A.C.E. FRAMEWORK:
S - SORT
Remove everything from the space.
Group like items together.
See what you actually have (duplicates, skipped items).
P - PURGE
The "undecided" box gets a 30-day deadline.
If you didn't need it in 30 days, let it go.
A - ASSIGN A HOME
Every item needs a designated spot.
Store items where you use them.
Most-used items at most-accessible locations.
C - CONTAINERIZE
Now (and only now) choose containers and systems.
Measure before buying containers.
Label everything (especially shared spaces).
E - EQUALIZE (maintain)

The Usefulness-and-Value Test
When deciding what to keep, ask two questions about each item:
- Is it useful? Do I use this regularly? Does it serve a practical function in my current life?
- Is it valuable to me? Does it hold personal significance, bring me genuine satisfaction, or enhance my daily experience?
If the answer to both is no, the item is a candidate for removal. This simple two-question test draws from the same psychological principles behind multiple decluttering methods: keep what serves your life, release what does not.

Kitchen Organization
KITCHEN ORGANIZATION PLAN:
DECLUTTER FIRST:

Lower shelves: Raw meat, fish (prevents drip contamination)
Crisper drawers: Produce (separate high/low humidity if available)
Door: Condiments (NOT milk -- door is warmest spot)
Clear bins: Group categories for easy access
COUNTER RULES:
Counter-worthy items only: daily-use items (coffee maker, toaster, knife block)
Everything else: in cabinets or stored
Closet Organization
CLOSET ORGANIZATION PLAN:
STEP 1: EMPTY COMPLETELY
Remove every item. Yes, every item.
Clean the closet while empty.
STEP 2: SORT BY CATEGORY
Group all like items:
Dresses
Outerwear
Activewear
Sleepwear
Shoes
STEP 3: PURGE EACH CATEGORY
For each item, ask:

Hanging:
Order: jackets, dresses, blouses, pants, skirts
Within each: light to dark (left to right)
Folded (file folding = items stand upright):
Drawers: fold items into rectangles, store upright like files
Shelves: fold and stack neatly, or use shelf dividers
Shoes:
Seasonal rotation: off-season in bins
Accessories:
Jewelry: tray, wall organizer, or drawer insert
Ties: rack or hanger
STEP 5: MAINTENANCE RULES
Hanger trick: turn all hangers backward at start of season.
After wearing, hang normally. At season end, anything still
backward = you didn't wear it. Evaluate for donation.
One-in-one-out: buy something new, something old goes.
Seasonal swap: rotate warm/cold weather items (store off-season in bins)
Garage Organization

For every new item that enters your home,
one similar item must leave.
Buy a new shirt --> donate an old shirt

- Genuine needs being filled for the first time

Decluttering Decision Frameworks
For Difficult Items
DECISION HELPER FOR HARD ITEMS:
"But it was expensive..."
The money is spent whether you keep it or not (sunk cost).
Keeping an unused $200 item doesn't recover $200.
Sell it and recover some value, or donate and recover the space.
"But I might need it someday..."
If you haven't used it in 12 months, you likely won't.
Could you borrow or re-buy for less than the cost of storing it?
The 20/20 rule: If you can replace it for under $20 in under
20 minutes, let it go.
"But someone gave it to me..."
to store it forever. The person gave you a gift, not a
storage obligation.
"But it was my [parent's/grandparent's]..."
Keep the memory, not necessarily the object.
Take a photo of the item before releasing it.
Keep ONE representative item, not the entire collection.
Repurpose: use the item instead of storing it, or incorporate it
into your decor.
