When to Use
Use this skill when:

- A user is struggling with a nuisance behavior -- jumping, pulling on leash, counter surfing, barking, chewing, mouthing -- and needs a positive-reinforcement intervention plan
- A user wants to build a consistent multi-week training plan with session structure, treat progression, and distraction proofing
- A user asks about crate training, house training schedules, or litter box setup and troubleshooting
- A user wants to understand why their current training isn't working and needs a diagnostic approach to find the breakdown point

Do NOT use when:
- The pet has a documented bite history at Level 3 or above on the Dunbar Bite Scale (puncture wounds) -- refer to a CPDT-KA or DACVB immediately
- The user describes resource guarding behavior that has led to injury; this requires in-person professional assessment, not written guidance
- The request involves training exotic animals, birds, reptiles, or livestock -- use a domain-specific skill for those species

- The user is asking about training for professional working roles -- detection, search and rescue, service dog certification -- these require specialized expert programs beyond general training guidance
Process
Step 1: Gather Essential Information Before Building Any Plan
Before generating a training plan, collect the following details. If the user hasn't provided them, ask targeted questions rather than assuming defaults.
- Species and life stage: Dog (puppy under 6 months, adolescent 6--18 months, adult 18 months+, senior 7+ years) or cat (kitten under 6 months, adult, senior). Life stage determines session length, attention span, physical capability, and hormonal influences.
- Breed or breed mix: Herding breeds (Border Collie, Australian Shepherd) need mental stimulation built into every session. Scent hounds (Beagle, Bloodhound) are nose-driven and distract easily outdoors. Bully breeds often need shorter, more rewarding sessions with high-value food. Brachycephalic breeds (Bulldog, Pug) tire quickly and need climate-aware sessions.
- Current training history: Has the pet had any prior training? Were punishment-based methods used (prong collar, shock collar, alpha rolls)? If so, the pet may have conditioned fear responses that must be addressed before new behaviors can be reliably installed.
- Primary motivators: Food (high value = fresh meat, freeze-dried liver, cheese vs. low value = kibble, dry biscuits), toys (tug, fetch), or social praise. Determine what the pet will actually work for, not just what the owner thinks they should like.
- Target behavior: Is this a new behavior to install, a behavior to proof against distractions, or a problem behavior to reduce or redirect?
- Available time: Realistic daily minutes available. Twice-daily 5-minute sessions beat one 30-minute session that leaves both pet and human frustrated.
- Household consistency: Are multiple people training the same pet? Inconsistent cues and rules between family members are the single most common reason training stalls.
- Living environment: Apartment (limited outdoor access for potty training), house with yard, multi-pet household, high-distraction urban environment, or rural setting.
Step 2: Select the Correct Training Methodology and Equipment
Choose the right foundational technique for the specific behavior and pet before building any steps.
- Luring: Use a food or toy to guide the body into position. Best for initial behavior installation (sit, down, spin). Fade the lure within 3--5 repetitions per session or the pet becomes lure-dependent and won't respond without food in hand.
- Shaping (free shaping): Reward successive approximations of a target behavior without luring. Best for complex behaviors and for building problem-solving confidence. Use a clicker or precise marker word ("yes!") because timing within 0.5 seconds is critical.
- Capturing: Mark and reward a behavior the animal offers naturally (sitting, lying down, stretching). Excellent for cats, relaxed behaviors, and owners who struggle with mechanical luring.
- Classical conditioning (counter-conditioning): Pair an aversive stimulus (strangers, other dogs, nail clippers) with high-value food to change the emotional response. Used alongside desensitization for fear-based issues.
- Targeting: Train the pet to touch their nose or paw to a specific object (target stick, hand, mat). Targeting underlies dozens of advanced behaviors and is an essential foundation skill.
- Equipment selection:
- Puppies and dogs in loose-leash training: front-clip harness (sternum ring redirects forward lunging) paired with a 6-foot flat leash. Never use retractable leashes during training -- they teach variable tension and reward pulling.
- Crate training: wire or plastic crate sized so the pet can stand, turn around, and lie down fully -- but no larger for potty training purposes (extra space allows toileting in one end and sleeping in another).
- Clicker: box clicker or button clicker. Consistent, non-emotional, faster than voice.
- Marker word alternative: "Yes!" delivered in a consistent tone (not excited shrieking, which can overarouse).
- Treat pouch: worn on the hip for immediate food delivery. Fumbling in a pocket adds 2--3 seconds of delay, destroying the reinforcement signal.
- Long line: 15--30 foot lightweight leash for recall training outdoors before the pet has earned off-leash freedom. Never use a retractable leash as a long line substitute -- the brake mechanism teaches the pet to pull against constant tension.
Step 3: Apply the Correct Operant Conditioning Quadrant
Every training decision falls into one of four quadrants. Always default to the top two before considering anything else.
- Positive reinforcement (+R): Add something the pet wants immediately after a desired behavior. This increases the likelihood of the behavior repeating. Use this as the primary method for all behavior installation. The reinforcer must follow the behavior within 1--3 seconds to be effective.
- Negative punishment (-P): Remove something the pet wants when an unwanted behavior occurs. Example: turning away from a jumping dog (removing attention). This reduces jumping without fear or pain. Use this as the default consequence for attention-seeking nuisance behaviors.
- Positive punishment (+P) and negative reinforcement (-R): Adding aversives or removing aversives contingent on behavior. Current peer-reviewed research consistently shows these methods increase stress cortisol, suppress behavior without teaching alternatives, and damage the human-animal bond. Do not recommend prong collars, shock collars (e-collars), alpha rolls, scruff shakes, or leash corrections.
- The 80% Rule: A behavior is considered reliably learned when the pet responds correctly on the first cue 80% of the time across three consecutive sessions. Do not add difficulty (duration, distance, or distraction) until this threshold is met.
Step 4: Structure Every Training Session Using the Proven Framework
Session structure determines whether training builds confidence or creates frustration. Apply this framework consistently.
- Session length by life stage:
- Puppies 8--12 weeks: 2--3 minutes maximum, 5--8 micro-sessions per day
- Puppies 3--5 months: 5 minutes, 3--5 sessions per day
- Puppies 6--12 months: 5--10 minutes, 2--3 sessions per day
- Adolescent and adult dogs: 10--15 minutes, 1--2 formal sessions per day, plus integrated training during daily routines
- Adult cats and kittens: 3--5 minutes strictly, 2--3 sessions per day before meals
- Warm-up (first 20% of session): Start with 2--3 known behaviors the pet performs at 90%+ reliability. This builds arousal, engagement, and confidence before introducing challenge.
- Training block (middle 60%): Introduce new behavior or work on the current training goal. If the pet fails 3 consecutive attempts, immediately lower the criteria -- shorten the duration, reduce the distance, remove a distraction, or return to the previous step in the shaping chain.
- Cool-down (final 20%): Return to easy, reliable behaviors. End every session with a success, never with a failure. The last thing practiced is the thing most strengthened in memory (recency effect).
- Jackpot reinforcement: Occasionally (not every session) deliver 5--10 small treats in rapid succession for an exceptional performance. This creates variable reinforcement history, which strengthens persistence.
- Train before meals, never after: A slightly hungry pet is more food-motivated. A full pet may not work for food at all. Never use meal deprivation as a training tool -- mild food motivation is sufficient.
- Treat size: Pea-sized or smaller for dogs (approximately 1--2 calories each). Cats: a single lick of squeeze treat or one piece of freeze-dried protein. High treat volume across a session should not exceed 10% of daily caloric intake.
Step 5: Install Behaviors in the Correct Developmental Sequence
Build behaviors in a logical prerequisite chain. Jumping to advanced behaviors before foundations are solid creates unreliable performance and training frustration.
Dog foundation sequence (install in this order):
- Name recognition -- the prerequisite for every other cue
- Sit -- easiest to lure, provides a framework for impulse control
- Hand target (nose to palm) -- foundational for all directed movement
- Down -- from sit, lure down between front paws
- Stay (duration first, then distance, then distraction -- NEVER combine two D's simultaneously)
- Come (recall) -- always the highest-value reward in the repertoire; never call to punish
- Leave it -- classical then operant progression (closed fist to open palm to floor to real-world)
- Loose leash walking -- requires sit, leave it, and attention/watch me as prerequisites
- Place (go to mat) -- builds on down and stay, essential for impulse control in daily life
- Advanced tricks and off-leash behaviors -- only after all foundations are reliable under mild distraction
Cat foundation sequence:
- Charging the marker (clicker or verbal marker paired with high-value food 20--30 times)
- Name response -- cat orients toward owner on name (reward orientation, not just proximity)
- Hand targeting -- nose to palm; this is the cat's version of loose leash walking foundation
- Sit -- lure treat above nose, click the moment haunches contact the floor
- Come -- name + specific cue word + high-value treat every single time
- Carrier conditioning -- cats need weeks of voluntary carrier entry before it's ever needed
- Cooperative care behaviors -- chin rest, paw handling, body examination -- reduces veterinary stress dramatically
Step 6: Proof Behaviors Across All Three D's (Duration, Distance, Distraction)
A behavior that only works in the kitchen with no distractions is not trained -- it is performed under specific conditions. Proofing makes behaviors reliable in real life.
- The Three D's rule: Increase only ONE dimension at a time. If you extend duration, keep distance at zero and distraction minimal. If you add distraction (another dog walks by), shorten duration and return to close distance.
- Duration proofing for Stay: Begin at 1 second. Increase by 2--3 seconds per successful trial. At 30 seconds, introduce distance. If the pet breaks at any point, reset to 50% of the last successful duration -- never the failed duration.
- Distance proofing: One step at a time. Return to the pet to reward (do not call the pet out of Stay to treat -- that destroys the Stay behavior). Build to 20 feet before introducing significant distraction.
- Distraction hierarchy (lowest to highest):
- Trainer moves slightly while giving cue
- Novel objects placed nearby but stationary
- Other family members moving around the training space
- Training in a new room
- Training in a new location (front yard, parking lot, park perimeter)
- Training with other dogs or people in the environment
- Training with other dogs approaching directly
- Location generalization: Dogs do not generalize learning the way humans do. A dog that sits reliably in the kitchen may need 3--5 repetitions to understand "sit" means the same thing at the park. Plan to practice every new behavior in a minimum of 5 different locations before considering it proofed.
- The 1-second rule for adding distractions: When introducing a new distraction, if the pet fails on the first attempt, the distraction was too intense. Either increase physical distance from the distraction or reduce the behavioral criteria (ask for a simpler behavior first).
Step 7: Address Problem Behaviors Using the ABC Framework
Problem behaviors are always communicating something. Identify what the behavior achieves for the animal before attempting to change it.
- Antecedent -- Behavior -- Consequence (ABC) analysis:
- Antecedent: What triggers the behavior? (Doorbell rings, owner puts on shoes, another dog appears on walk)
- Behavior: What exactly does the pet do? Be precise -- "goes crazy" is not useful; "barks continuously, lunges toward the door, cannot be redirected for 45 seconds" is actionable
- Consequence: What does the pet get from the behavior? (Attention, the thing goes away, owner stops the walk, another dog retreats)
- Differential reinforcement strategies:
- DRI (reinforcement of an incompatible behavior): The pet cannot jump up and sit simultaneously. Reinforce the sit heavily as the default greeting behavior. Every human the pet approaches reinforces only four-feet-on-floor.
- DRA (reinforcement of an alternative behavior): For counter surfing, reinforce lying on a mat in the kitchen during meal prep with a long-lasting chew (bully stick, Kong stuffed with frozen peanut butter/pumpkin mix).
- DRO (reinforcement of the absence of the behavior): Reward the pet at intervals for NOT performing the problem behavior. Used for barking -- reward silence every 30 seconds, extending the interval as the pet succeeds.
- Management and prevention: During the training period, prevent the pet from practicing the problem behavior. Every instance of successful problem behavior is a self-reinforcing training trial that strengthens the behavior. Use baby gates, leashes, crates, and food-stuffed enrichment to prevent access to reinforcement for problem behaviors while alternative behaviors are being installed.
- Extinction bursts: When reinforcement is removed from a previously reinforced behavior (ignoring jumping), the behavior will initially get more intense before it decreases. Warn the user about this. The worst thing to do during an extinction burst is give in -- this teaches the pet that more intense behavior produces the desired outcome.
Step 8: Create a Written Training Plan and Troubleshoot Progress
Deliver a concrete, customized plan the user can follow for the next 2--4 weeks.
- Structure the plan with weekly milestones, not just a list of steps -- this gives the user checkpoints to assess progress
- Identify the single most important prerequisite behavior and make that the exclusive focus of week one; multi-behavior plans without sequencing create jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none results
- Specify exact treat types (use the user's described motivators), session frequency, and what success looks like at each stage
- Include a troubleshooting guide for the three most common failure points for the specific behavior being trained
- Schedule a re-assessment point: if progress hasn't reached the specified milestone by the target date, provide explicit criteria for when to simplify (go back one step) vs. when the issue might indicate a need for professional consultation
- For multi-pet households, specify who trains, when, and how cues must be standardized across all handlers

Rules
Never repeat a cue more than once. Say the cue exactly once, then prompt with a lure or physical guide if needed. Repeating commands ("Sit, sit, SIT!") teaches the pet that the first repetition is meaningless and only the shouted version requires compliance. If the pet doesn't respond, the cue has not been learned sufficiently -- return to luring before adding the verbal cue.
The marker (click or verbal) must precede the treat by no more than 3 seconds, and the mark must occur within 0.5--1 second of the desired behavior. Late marking reinforces whatever the pet was doing at the moment of the mark, not the intended behavior. If a user's timing is consistently late, recommend charging the clicker and practicing marker games before attempting complex behavior shaping.
Never use recall (come) as a precursor to anything the pet dislikes. If you call the dog to clip nails, put on a collar before leaving the park, or end play, recall loses its value within weeks. Instead, go TO the pet for unpleasant activities. Recall must always be followed by praise, treats, and the option to continue whatever the pet was doing or something equivalently positive.
Maintain the single-D rule religiously. Duration, distance, and distraction must be increased one at a time. The most common reason a trained behavior falls apart is an owner who extends distance AND introduces a new environment simultaneously. If this happens, reset to the last level where the pet achieved 80% and build only one variable.
Management is not optional during behavior modification. If a pet continues to practice a problem behavior while a replacement behavior is being trained, the replacement behavior will never win -- the problem behavior has more practice history and a higher reinforcement rate. Baby gates, leashes, crates, puzzle feeders, and stuffed Kongs are not failures; they are essential training tools.
Never end a session on a failed attempt. If a pet fails three consecutive times at a given step, immediately ask for a behavior they know well, reward generously, and end the session. Resuming with an easier step reduces failure-induced shutdown (learned helplessness) and keeps training emotionally positive.
Treat value must match task difficulty. Kibble in the living room for a known sit is fine. Kibble at a dog park with other dogs for a recall is insufficient. Upgrade treat value whenever distractions, new environments, or new behaviors are introduced. Freeze-dried chicken, beef liver, cheese, and deli meat are reliable high-value options for most dogs.
Every human in the household must use identical cue words and rules. Inconsistency is the primary silent killer of training progress. If one family member allows jumping while another ignores it and another corrects it, the dog learns that jumping sometimes works -- which creates the most persistent behavior possible (variable ratio reinforcement schedule). Establish a household cue list and post it in a visible location.
Do not advance a behavior to the next difficulty level based on one excellent performance. The 80% rule requires 80% correct responses across three consecutive sessions -- not three consecutive trials in one session. Premature advancement creates unreliable behaviors that look trained but fall apart under mild pressure.
Fear-based responses require counter-conditioning BEFORE operant training. If a pet shows fear indicators (whale eye, tucked tail, lip lick, yawning, freezing, low body posture, ears flat) during training, stop immediately. Attempting to train a fearful animal using operant conditioning suppresses fear signals without changing the underlying emotional state, creating a shut-down animal that may escalate to aggression without warning signs. Address the fear response first with gradual desensitization and classical counter-conditioning.
Edge Cases
The Adolescent Regression (Dogs 6--18 Months)
Adolescent dogs frequently stop responding to previously reliable commands. This is neurologically normal -- the adolescent canine brain undergoes significant pruning and is flooded with sex hormones, creating an animal that is cognitively more similar to a puppy than an adult despite physical maturity. Response: do not punish regression or assume the training "didn't stick." Return to luring for commands that have gone unreliable. Increase treat value significantly. Shorten sessions. Increase management and leash use outdoors. If male dogs are not neutered, specific behaviors (roaming, urine marking, mounting) may escalate substantially and may not be fully trainable until hormone levels stabilize or the dog is neutered. This is a veterinary conversation, not a training one.
Multiple Pets in One Household Training
Training one pet while another is present is an advanced skill that should not be attempted until each pet has solid individual foundations. Correct approach: train pets separately in the early stages. Gate off or crate the non-training pet with a stuffed Kong to prevent interference. Once each pet has reliable behaviors individually, introduce them together starting at the warm-up phase with easy known behaviors and high distraction-value treats. Never train two dogs simultaneously on the same behavior -- this creates competition, resource guarding around treats, and muddied behavioral signals.
The Rescue Dog With Unknown History
Many rescue dogs have conditioned fear responses to specific stimuli -- hands raised overhead, direct eye contact, certain types of people, specific sounds -- that can masquerade as stubbornness or "dominant behavior." Before assigning any training protocol, spend the first 1--2 weeks allowing the dog to decompress (the "3-3-3 rule": 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn the routine, 3 months to feel at home). During decompression, avoid formal training sessions. Focus on building positive associations with handler, crate, and environment using pure classical conditioning -- no cues, no criteria, just pairing the handler's presence and common household events with high-value food. Only after the dog shows relaxed body language and seeks out human interaction should operant training begin.
Cat That Refuses All Food During Training Sessions
This is almost always a timing or value problem, not a "cats can't be trained" problem. Check three things: (1) Is the cat actually hungry? Cats fed ad libitum (free-access kibble) have no food motivation. Switch to two timed meals and train immediately before one of them. (2) Is the treat value high enough? Most cats will not work for kibble but will readily work for freeze-dried chicken, tuna juice from a squeeze tube, or a lick of meat-based baby food (no onion or garlic). (3) Is the session too long or the environment too arousing? Cats have a sharp disengagement threshold -- they don't "push through" discomfort the way many dogs do. Three minutes is a ceiling, not a guideline.
House Training Regression in a Previously Trained Adult Dog
Sudden house soiling in a previously reliable dog is a medical issue until proven otherwise. Urinary tract infections, Cushing's disease, diabetes, cognitive dysfunction syndrome (in seniors), intestinal parasites, dietary changes, and medications (prednisone causes increased urination) are all common culprits. Always recommend a veterinary examination before implementing any behavioral house-training protocol. If medical causes are ruled out, regression is usually triggered by a major environmental change (new baby, move, new pet, change in schedule) and responds to returning to the foundation house-training schedule for 2--3 weeks as if training a puppy again.
The "Shock Collar History" Dog
Dogs trained with electronic collars or prong collars may present with suppressed behavior, avoidance of the training context, or sudden explosive reactions when training equipment appears. They have often learned to perform behaviors to avoid aversive consequences rather than because the behavior has a positive reinforcement history. These dogs need a "clean slate" protocol: introduce a new marker (different word or different-sounding clicker), use entirely novel equipment (different collar, different leash), train in a new location, and begin the entire behavior installation sequence from the beginning as if the dog has no training history. Expect the first 2--4 weeks to be entirely about building positive emotional associations with training, not about achieving behavioral criteria. Progress will feel slow but creates a more durable result.
Teaching Stay to High-Energy or Anxious Dogs
Dogs with high arousal or anxiety find duration in stillness particularly difficult -- it requires active impulse control rather than movement, which is both mentally exhausting and physically uncomfortable for these individuals. Modify the protocol: use a platform or mat as the Stay location (physical boundaries help self-regulation), start with down-stay rather than sit-stay (down is a more relaxed body posture with a lower arousal ceiling), use a calm training voice rather than enthusiastic praise (which increases arousal), and build duration in 1-second increments rather than 2--3 second increments. For dogs with generalized anxiety, consult a veterinarian about whether behavioral medication would improve training outcomes -- anxiolytic medication does not replace training but can lower the anxiety baseline enough that the dog can access their cognitive capacity to learn.
Multi-Cue Confusion (The Pet That Knows All Commands But Strings Them Together)
A common intermediate-training problem: the owner teaches sit, down, and shake, and the dog responds to "sit" by offering sit, then down, then shake in sequence while waiting to see which gets the treat. This is not a sign of high intelligence; it is a sign of insufficient cue discrimination. The dog has learned that offering behaviors produces treats, but has not learned that specific cues predict specific behaviors. Fix: practice "cue discrimination drills" -- randomly call for one of three known behaviors in unpredictable order, mark and treat ONLY correct first responses, and do nothing (no facial expression, no second cue) for incorrect responses. Within 50--100 trials, dogs discriminate correctly. If the dog is still confused, the problem is that the cues may be similar-sounding (shake vs. stay) -- rename one cue entirely.

Step 3: Stand still. Say cue phrase "Go potty" once. Wait quietly
for 3-5 minutes. Do not play, talk, or engage.
Step 4: Mango eliminates -- IMMEDIATELY (within 2 seconds):

This is the single most important training moment of the day.

second reward. (Going inside immediately after elimination

to you or put in crate for 15 minutes, try again.
ACCIDENT PROTOCOL:
Caught mid-act: Say "Oops!" calmly, pick up and take outside.
No scolding. Mango cannot connect punishment to an
