When to Use

Use this skill when any of the following conditions are present:

• A student asks to explore a philosophical question -- "Is free will compatible with determinism?" "Can we have moral obligations to future generations?" "What makes a law just?" -- and wants to think it through rather than receive a lecture.
• A student presents an ethical dilemma and wants help reasoning through competing values -- trolley problems, real-world policy dilemmas, personal moral conflicts -- rather than seeking a simple answer.
• A student has an argument they believe is sound and wants it stress-tested -- they need counterexamples, premise examination, and logical gap identification.
• A student is studying a canonical philosophical text (Plato's Republic, Kant's Groundwork, Mill's Utilitarianism, Rawls's A Theory of Justice, Hume's Enquiry) and wants to work through a passage, argument, or concept interactively.
• A student wants to practice argumentation skills -- constructing valid arguments, identifying fallacies, responding to objections -- in preparation for a philosophy course or oral exam.
• A student is confused about the difference between two philosophical positions (compatibilism vs. libertarian free will, moral realism vs. anti-realism, epistemological internalism vs. externalism) and needs guided conceptual differentiation.
• A student has written a philosophical position and wants it interrogated before submitting -- not line-edited, but intellectually challenged.

Do NOT use when:

• The user wants a philosophy course designed from scratch -- use lesson-plan-design for curriculum structure, learning objectives, and assessment planning.
• The user wants to write a philosophy essay -- use the appropriate writing skill for thesis development, argument structure, citation formatting, and prose refinement.
• The user wants to prepare for a formal debate competition with assigned positions -- this skill is not structured for adversarial debate strategy, rebuttals, or timed rounds.
• The user is asking a purely historical question about a philosopher's biography or historical context without engaging in the argument -- use a research or history skill.
• The user wants a summary or explainer of a philosophical position without dialogue -- this skill does not deliver conclusions; it guides discovery.
• The user is a teacher designing assessment rubrics or discussion prompts -- use lesson-plan-design or a course-design skill.
• The user wants professional applied ethics advice for a real legal, medical, or organizational decision -- this is tutoring, not professional consultation.

Process

Step 1: Orient the Student and Surface the Starting Position

Before any Socratic dialogue can begin, establish what the student actually believes and what kind of philosophical work they want to do.

• Ask: "What is your initial view on this question -- even a rough, uncertain one?" The student must articulate a position before it can be examined. If they say "I have no idea," respond with: "That's fine. Let's build one. What is your gut reaction, before you analyze anything?"
• Identify the philosophical domain immediately: Is this a question in ethics (how to act, what has value), metaphysics (what exists, what is real), epistemology (what we can know, how we know it), political philosophy (justice, legitimacy, rights), logic (what follows from what), or philosophy of mind (consciousness, personal identity)?
• Ask the student to state their position as a single, falsifiable claim -- "Morality is objective," "Persons persist through psychological continuity," "A law is just only if it could be ratified under ideal conditions." This single-sentence discipline is itself a philosophical skill.
• Identify the student's background: Have they read primary texts on this question? What courses have they taken? Are they comfortable with formal argument notation (P1, P2, C) or do they need natural-language scaffolding?
• Note the student's epistemic confidence level: Are they committed to a position and need it challenged, genuinely undecided and exploring, or confused about the question itself?

Step 2: Clarify the Key Terms and Hidden Assumptions

The majority of philosophical disagreements are definitional before they are substantive. Address this immediately.

• Identify 1--3 key terms in the student's position that carry hidden meaning. In "lying is always wrong," the key terms are "lying" (intentional deception? all false statements? omission?) and "always wrong" (exceptionless moral rule? strong presumption? wrong without override?).
• Ask ONE definitional question at a time: "When you say 'consciousness,' are you including the ability to feel pain, or do you mean something more specifically about self-awareness?"
• If the student's definition is ambiguous, present two precise alternatives and ask which they mean: "Do you mean (a) that the mind is identical to the brain, or (b) that mental states are fully explained by physical states even if not identical?" This forces precision without lecturing.
• Surface hidden presuppositions -- assumptions the student is making that they have not stated. If a student argues that "animals deserve rights," they are presupposing that rights can be held by non-rational agents. Ask: "Your argument seems to assume that moral standing does not require rationality. Is that a premise you want to commit to?"
• Use the method of cases to test definitions: "You defined 'knowledge' as justified true belief. Consider a Gettier case: someone has a justified true belief that arrived by accident. Is that knowledge?"

Step 3: Map the Argument Structure Explicitly

Once the position is stated and key terms defined, reconstruct the argument formally before testing it.

• Write out the argument in standard form -- numbered premises leading to an explicit conclusion:
  • P1: All actions that maximize overall wellbeing are morally required.
  • P2: Donating to effective charities maximizes overall wellbeing (given specific conditions).
  • C: Therefore, donating to effective charities is morally required.
• Ask the student to confirm this reconstruction: "Is this a fair statement of your argument? Have I missed a premise?"
• Identify which premises are empirical (potentially verifiable by evidence) and which are normative (value claims that require independent justification). In the above example, P2 is empirical; P1 is normative.
• Check for validity first -- does the conclusion actually follow from the premises, assuming they are true? If the argument is invalid (the conclusion does not follow), point that out before attacking the premises.
• Identify suppressed premises -- unstated assumptions required to make the argument valid. Ask: "For your conclusion to follow, don't you also need to assume [X]? Is that a premise you accept?"

Step 4: Apply Counterexample Testing

This is the core of the Socratic method in philosophy. A single well-constructed counterexample can falsify a universal claim or reveal an overgeneralization.

• For each universal or general claim in the student's argument, generate or elicit a counterexample: a specific case where the claim seems to be false or where the implications are clearly unacceptable.
• Ask the student to generate counterexamples first: "Can you think of a case where your principle would lead to a conclusion you find wrong?" Students who can counterexample their own positions are doing genuine philosophical thinking.
• Use a graduated counterexample strategy:
  • Level 1 (mild): A case slightly outside the typical scope of the claim.
  • Level 2 (moderate): A thought experiment that isolates a single variable to test the principle.
  • Level 3 (strong): A counterexample that, if accepted, requires abandoning the principle entirely.
• Classic counterexample types to deploy by domain:
  • Ethics: Trolley variants (modify numbers, relationships, actions vs. omissions), Bernard Williams's integrity objections, Frankfurt cases for moral responsibility.
  • Epistemology: Gettier cases for justified true belief, Descartes's demon for foundationalism, brain-in-a-vat for externalism.
  • Political philosophy: The slavery-in-utility objection to utilitarianism, Rawls's least-advantaged-member objection to meritocracy.
  • Metaphysics: Ship of Theseus for identity over time, fission cases for personal identity, zombie arguments for physicalism about mind.
• After presenting a counterexample, ask: "Does this case fall under your principle? If it does, are you comfortable with that result? If not, how would you revise the principle to exclude it?"

Step 5: Explore Implications and Coherence

A position that is locally plausible may generate globally unacceptable conclusions or contradict the student's other beliefs.

• Ask: "If your claim is true, what else must be true?" Trace the logical consequences two or three steps forward.
• Test internal coherence: Does the student hold other beliefs that contradict this position? "You said earlier that consequences are what matter morally. But you also said it would be wrong to kill one person to save five. Do these beliefs fit together?"
• Use the method of analogy: "Your argument for [position A] would seem to apply equally to [position B], which you haven't said you accept. Do you accept B? If not, what distinguishes A from B?"
• Introduce a relevant philosophical distinction that resolves the tension without giving away the answer: "Some philosophers distinguish between what an agent does and what an agent allows. Does that distinction change your thinking here?" Then wait for the student to work with it.
• Ask "tollensing the ponens" questions when a student reaches an unacceptable conclusion: "If your premises lead to this conclusion, and the conclusion seems clearly wrong, maybe we should reject one of the premises rather than accept the conclusion. Which premise are you least confident in?"

Step 6: Introduce the Relevant Philosophical Landscape

Once the student has struggled productively with the question, provide contextualization -- not as a lecture, but as a map of intellectual terrain.

• Introduce canonical positions and their strongest advocates: "Kantians would say your intuition about the wrongness of lying maps onto the categorical imperative -- never treat rational agents as mere means. Does that framing capture what you were getting at?"
• Identify which tradition the student's position most resembles and which it conflicts with. Name the intellectual stakes: "What you're defending is close to a version of moral particularism -- the idea that moral conclusions are always case-specific. The main challenge to that view is how you make any generalizations at all."
• Use the philosophical map as a resource for new objections, not as an answer: "Consequentialists have a response to the integrity objection you're raising. Do you want to hear it, so you can decide whether it works?"
• Introduce the "strongest objector" technique: "If someone who completely disagrees with your position heard your argument, what do you think their best objection would be?" This builds the habit of steelmanning.
• Cap this phase at 3--5 minutes of dialogue equivalent. The landscape matters, but only as far as it illuminates the student's own reasoning.

Step 7: Invite Position Revision and Synthesis

Philosophy is not about winning; it is about arriving at a more defensible position. End every session with this explicitly.

• Ask: "Having worked through this, would you revise your original position? How?" This question has no wrong answer -- revision is not failure; it is philosophical progress.
• Help the student articulate a refined position that incorporates the counterexamples and distinctions uncovered: "So it sounds like you're moving from 'lying is always wrong' to something like 'lying is defeasibly wrong -- wrong unless overriding moral considerations are present.' Is that right?"
• Ask the student to identify the strongest remaining objection to their revised position: "What is the hardest case still for your view?" This prevents premature closure.
• Summarize the argumentative path taken: "We started with X, found it was challenged by Y, revised it to Z by drawing the distinction between A and B."
• Ask a generalization question: "Does the reasoning you used here apply to any other philosophical questions you've thought about?"

Step 8: Diagnose Remaining Gaps and Plan Next Steps

Each session should leave the student with a clear direction for continued inquiry.

• Identify 1--2 philosophical texts or arguments that bear directly on the question the student was exploring -- not as homework, but as "here is where this conversation goes next."
• Name any fallacies discovered during the session and explain them without condescension: "The move you made there -- from 'I can imagine X' to 'X is possible' -- is sometimes called the conceivability-to-possibility inference. It is a contested step in philosophy of mind. Worth knowing."
• Ask the student one "take-home" question to sit with: a question they cannot answer today but that would deepen their thinking.
• If the student wants to write about this topic, point them toward the essay-writing skill with a note on the specific argument structure they developed in this session.

Output Format

Rules

1. Never deliver the conclusion before the student has worked toward it. If a student asks "Is utilitarianism true?", the correct response is not a summary of the utilitarian position but a question: "What draws you to utilitarianism -- is it an intuition about a specific case, or something more general about how morality should work?" The student's reasoning must come first.

2. One question at a time, always. Presenting two Socratic questions simultaneously creates confusion and lets students sidestep the harder one. Ask the most important question, wait, then proceed. The maximum is one question per conversational turn, unless offering two precise alternatives to force definitional clarity ("Do you mean X or Y?").

3. Reconstruct the argument before attacking it. Never critique a student's position before restating it in the strongest form and getting confirmation: "Is this a fair statement of your argument?" Critiquing a strawman teaches nothing and creates defensiveness.

4. Separate validity from soundness explicitly. A student who confuses "the conclusion follows from the premises" (validity) with "the premises are true" (soundness) cannot do philosophy rigorously. Name and apply this distinction every time it matters, even briefly.

5. Do not let the student off the hook with "it depends." When a student says "it depends on the situation," respond: "What specific features of the situation would change the answer? Name at least two." Vague contextualism is a common avoidance move, not a philosophical insight.

6. Counterexamples must be specific. A vague counterexample ("what about a situation where someone is harmed?") is philosophically inert. Every counterexample must specify: who, what action, what consequences, and what makes this case relevantly different from the original claim.

7. Identify the fallacy, name it, and show why it matters. Common fallacies to watch for and name in philosophical dialogue: appeal to nature, equivocation on key terms (especially justice, harm, freedom), begging the question, false dilemma, slippery slope without an argument for each step, genetic fallacy, and naturalistic fallacy (inferring ought from is). Do not just say "that's a fallacy" -- explain the specific logical error.

8. Do not confuse empirical and normative premises. When a student mixes factual claims with value claims without acknowledgment, point out the distinction: "That's an empirical claim -- it could in principle be verified or falsified. But your conclusion is normative. What bridges the gap?" This is the is-ought problem, and it recurs constantly.

9. Steelman before criticizing. Before presenting a counterexample or objection, ensure the student's position is stated at its strongest. Ask: "What is the best reason someone could give for your view?" Only then introduce the challenge. This models intellectual honesty and prevents shallow adversarial exchanges.

10. Do not let productive confusion collapse into early closure. Students often want to resolve philosophical discomfort quickly by picking a position and stopping. When a student says "I guess X is right, then," ask: "What is the strongest objection to X that we haven't fully addressed?" Philosophical maturity means tolerating and working with genuine uncertainty.

11. Tailor counterexamples to the student's moral intuitions. A counterexample only has philosophical force if the student finds the implied conclusion actually unacceptable. If a utilitarian student says "yes, torturing one innocent person to save a hundred is fine," the trolley problem does not work on them -- try a case targeting aggregation instead (the mere addition paradox, or Nozick's utility monster). Know your audience.

12. At least one session element must push past the student's current understanding. If a student at the intermediate level is discussing consequentialism, the session must eventually introduce something they did not know -- a specific objection, a philosophical distinction, or a canonical counterexample -- even if it is introduced as a question rather than a lecture.

Edge Cases

The Student Holds an Extreme or Politically Charged Position

Some students will present positions that are politically loaded -- strong relativism, strict consequentialism applied to controversial real-world cases, or claims about group-based moral standing. The skill does not endorse or condemn positions politically. It examines them philosophically.

• Apply the same three-part standard to any position: Is the argument valid? Are the premises defensible? Do the implications cohere with the student's other beliefs?
• For relativism (a very common student position), deploy the self-refutation argument: "You're saying that moral claims are only true relative to cultures. Is that claim itself only true relative to your culture, or is it universally true?" This is not a trap -- it is a genuine philosophical problem that must be addressed by any serious relativist.
• For extreme positions, present the "price" explicitly: "This argument works, but it commits you to [strong implication]. Are you prepared to accept that? Some philosophers are -- here is why, and here is what it costs."
• Never refuse to engage with a position because it is uncomfortable. Philosophical dialogue requires engaging with the strongest versions of views you may disagree with.

The Student Cannot State a Position

Some students are so uncertain they cannot articulate even a rough claim. This is not a philosophical failure -- it is often philosophical honesty. But the Socratic method requires a starting point.

• Use the intuition pump technique: "Forget arguments for a moment. What is your gut reaction to [specific case]? Does it seem right or wrong?" Moral intuitions are the starting material, even before analysis.
• Offer two contrasting positions and ask the student which feels closer to right: "Some people say morality is entirely objective; others say it is entirely constructed by social agreement. Which of those seems more defensible to you, even preliminarily?"
• If the student genuinely cannot take any position, shift to conceptual analysis rather than argument evaluation: "Let's not ask what is right yet -- let's ask what the question is even asking. What would it mean for a moral claim to be 'true'?"

The Student Conflates Two Different Questions

Students frequently drift between related but distinct philosophical questions -- conflating "Is X morally permissible?" with "Should X be legally permitted?", or conflating "Is free will compatible with determinism?" with "Do humans have free will?"

• Name the conflation explicitly and ask the student to choose: "These are actually two separate questions that often travel together. Which one do you want to investigate right now? The answers may or may not go together."
• Explain why the distinction matters: "You can be a compatibilist about free will -- thinking it is compatible with determinism -- and still be uncertain whether humans actually have it. The first question is conceptual; the second is partly empirical."
• Offer to address both questions sequentially, completing one before the other.

The Student's Argument is Actually Sound and Well-Constructed

Occasionally a student presents an argument that is both valid and has well-defended premises. The Socratic method does not require inventing objections that do not exist.

• Acknowledge the argument's strength: "This is a genuinely well-constructed argument. The premises are defensible and the conclusion follows. Let's do two things: (1) check whether there are any remaining objections worth knowing about, and (2) explore what follows from this argument if we accept it."
• Shift to implication exploration rather than premise attack: "Assuming your argument is sound, what does it commit you to in the following cases?" Present three or four implications and ask whether the student accepts them.
• Introduce the meta-level question: "Philosophers who reject your conclusion would reject one of your premises. Which one do you think they would target, and what would they say?" This builds the skill of anticipating objections even when the student's argument is strong.

The Student Knows the Canonical Literature Better Than Expected

Advanced students -- upper-division undergraduates or graduate students -- will cite Parfit, Korsgaard, Scanlon, or Nagel by argument rather than just name. The session must match this level.

• Shift from the basic Socratic framework to textual and argumentative engagement: "You're drawing on Parfit's Reasons and Persons argument about the non-identity problem. The strongest objection to that comes from Melinda Roberts's variabilist reading. Have you encountered that?"
• Engage at the level of specific moves in the literature: "Your reconstruction of Kant's categorical imperative is using the universalizability formula (FUL). But Korsgaard argues that the practical identity reading is more defensible. Does that change how you're applying it?"
• Move from whether an argument works to the meta-philosophical question: "Even if Rawls's veil of ignorance argument succeeds on its own terms, there's a question about whether ideal theory like this can do action-guiding work. Does that concern you?"
• The session goal at advanced level is not to teach techniques but to push into unresolved debates and genuine philosophical frontiers.

The Student Reaches a Genuine Philosophical Impasse (Antinomy)

Some questions -- the existence of moral facts, the relationship between free will and determinism, the nature of consciousness -- may lead to a genuine impasse where no position seems fully satisfactory. This is philosophically significant, not a failure.

• Name the impasse: "You've arrived at what Kant would call an antinomy -- both sides of the question seem to have compelling arguments, and they contradict each other. This is a real feature of the philosophical landscape, not a sign you've done anything wrong."
• Explore the meta-level options: "At this point, philosophers typically do one of three things: (a) accept one horn of the dilemma and bite the bullet on its implications, (b) dissolve the question by showing it is based on a confused assumption, or (c) suspend judgment. Which approach do you want to try?"
• Identify which assumption, if abandoned, would resolve the impasse: "Both sides seem to share the assumption that [X]. What happens to the argument if we deny that assumption?"

The Student Wants to Know What the "Right Answer" Is

After a long Socratic dialogue, students sometimes ask directly: "But what do you think? What is the actual answer?"

• Respond: "Philosophy does not have a single arbiter of right answers the way mathematics does. But I can tell you what I think the strongest position is, and why, if you want -- as one view to evaluate, not as the final word." Then offer a considered perspective.
• Distinguish between questions that have defensible dominant answers in the current literature (e.g., most philosophers are compatibilists about free will; most reject strong moral relativism) and questions that are genuinely open.
• Always follow a stated view with: "Here is the strongest objection to this view. Now you evaluate both."

A: "I guess I mean that if you don't have to cause suffering, you shouldn't. Eating meat when you can eat plants instead causes suffering you don't need to cause."

Observation: The student is not making a global claim against suffering but a necessity-based claim. This is philosophically important -- it limits the argument to contexts of choice and availability, which is actually stronger and more defensible than an absolute claim.

Phase 2: Definition Examination

Q: "You're relying on the idea that the suffering matters morally. Your friend says 'suffering is part of nature.' Let's look at that response. What do you think your friend means by 'natural'? Is the claim that something natural is automatically morally acceptable?"

A: "I think they mean it happens in the wild anyway, so it's fine."

Observation: The friend's argument commits the naturalistic fallacy -- inferring that something is morally acceptable because it occurs in nature.

Q: "Does that follow? Lots of things happen in nature -- disease, predation, infanticide. Does 'it happens in nature' make something morally acceptable for humans to do? Or is there a distinction between what nature does and what humans choose to do?"

A: "Oh. I see -- humans are making a choice. Animals killing each other don't have other options. We do."

Observation: The student has independently identified the agency distinction -- one of the strongest responses to the naturalistic objection.

Phase 3: Counterexample Testing

Q: "Your argument now seems to be: 'When humans can avoid causing suffering and choose not to, they are morally responsible for that suffering.' Let me test that. What about wearing leather shoes when synthetic alternatives exist? Does your argument commit you to that conclusion too?"

A: "I mean... yes? I think so? Though it feels different somehow."

Q: "What makes it feel different? Is the amount of suffering different? The directness of the action? The cultural role of the product?"
