Questions to Ask the User First

Before offering guidance, understand their situation:

The Exposure Triangle

The three fundamental controls that determine how much light reaches your sensor:

ISO (Sensor Sensitivity)

• Low ISO (100-400): Clean image, minimal noise/grain. Use in bright conditions.
• Medium ISO (400-1600): Some noise. Use in moderate light or when you need faster shutter speeds.
• High ISO (1600-6400+): Noticeable noise/grain. Use in low light when flash isn't an option.

Rule of thumb: Use the lowest ISO you can get away with. Modern cameras handle high ISO much better than older ones.

Aperture (f-stop)

Controls how wide the lens opening is. Measured in f-stops (confusingly, smaller numbers = wider opening).

• Wide aperture (f/1.4 - f/2.8): Lots of light, shallow depth of field (blurry background). Great for portraits and low light.
• Medium aperture (f/4 - f/8): Moderate depth of field. Sharp across more of the image. The "sweet spot" for most lenses.
• Narrow aperture (f/11 - f/22): Less light, deep depth of field (everything sharp). Great for landscapes.

Depth of field is how much of the image is in focus from front to back:

• Wider aperture = shallower depth of field (more background blur)
• Narrower aperture = deeper depth of field (more in focus)
• Closer to subject = shallower depth of field
• Longer focal length = shallower depth of field (at the same framing)

Shutter Speed

How long the sensor is exposed to light.

• Fast (1/500 - 1/8000): Freezes motion. Sports, action, wildlife.
• Medium (1/60 - 1/250): General shooting. Handheld minimum varies by focal length.
• Slow (1/30 - 1"): Motion blur, smooth water, light trails. Requires tripod.
• Long exposure (1" - 30"+): Star trails, light painting, silky waterfalls.

Handheld rule of thumb: Your shutter speed should be at least 1/(focal length). A 50mm lens needs at least 1/50s; a 200mm lens needs at least 1/200s. Image stabilization gives you 2-4 stops of leeway.

How They Work Together

Think of exposure as filling a glass with water:

• Aperture is how wide you open the tap
• Shutter speed is how long you leave it running
• ISO is how sensitive the glass is (how much water it "counts")

If you change one, you must compensate with another to maintain the same exposure.

Example trade-offs:

• Want more background blur? Open the aperture wider, but compensate with a faster shutter speed.
• Want to freeze action? Use a faster shutter speed, but open the aperture or raise ISO.
• Shooting in low light? Raise ISO, open aperture, or slow the shutter (or all three).

Composition Techniques

Rule of Thirds

Divide the frame into a 3x3 grid (most cameras and phones can display this). Place key elements along the grid lines or at their intersections rather than dead center.

Why it works: Off-center placement creates visual tension and directs the eye through the frame. Centered compositions feel static (which can be intentional and powerful).

When to break it: Symmetrical subjects, reflections, and portraits where you want direct confrontation with the viewer.

Leading Lines

Use natural lines in the scene (roads, fences, rivers, architecture, shadows) to draw the viewer's eye toward the subject or through the frame.

Types of leading lines:

• Converging lines: Create depth (railroad tracks vanishing to a point)
• Curved lines: Create elegance and flow (winding roads, rivers)
• Diagonal lines: Create energy and dynamism
• Horizontal lines: Create calm and stability
• Vertical lines: Create strength and grandeur

Golden Ratio / Golden Spiral

A more nuanced version of the rule of thirds based on the Fibonacci sequence. The spiral guides the viewer's eye in a natural flowing pattern from the outer edge to the focal point.

Useful for compositions with curved elements or when the rule of thirds feels too rigid.

Framing

Use elements in the scene to create a natural frame around your subject: doorways, windows, arches, tree branches, tunnels.

Why it works: Frames add depth, draw attention to the subject, and give context.

Negative Space

Leave large areas of "empty" space in the frame (sky, wall, water) to emphasize the subject and create breathing room.

When to use it: When you want a sense of isolation, simplicity, contemplation, or scale.

Symmetry and Patterns

Humans are drawn to symmetry and repeating patterns. Photograph them directly - or break the pattern with one element for even more impact.

Foreground Interest

Include an element in the foreground (rocks, flowers, texture) to add depth and draw the viewer into the scene. Especially powerful in landscape photography.

Fill the Frame

Get close. Eliminate distracting backgrounds by letting your subject fill the entire frame. This creates intimacy and impact.

Odd Numbers

Groups of three or five feel more dynamic and natural than groups of two or four. This applies to people, objects, and compositional elements.

Simplify

The most common mistake in photography is including too much. Ask: what can I remove from this frame? Every element should earn its place.

Lighting

Natural Light

Golden Hour (first/last hour of sunlight):

• Warm, soft, directional light
• Long shadows that add depth and texture
• Universally flattering for portraits
• The single best thing you can do for your photography is shoot during golden hour

Blue Hour (20-30 minutes before sunrise / after sunset):

• Cool, ethereal, even light
• Beautiful for cityscapes and landscapes
• Sky acts as a giant softbox

Overcast Days:

• Nature's softbox - even, diffused light with no harsh shadows
• Excellent for portraits (no squinting, no unflattering shadows)
• Colors appear more saturated
• Flat light can lack drama - look for other sources of visual interest

Harsh Midday Sun:

• Creates strong shadows and high contrast
• Can be unflattering for portraits (raccoon eyes)
• Workarounds: Find open shade, use a reflector, embrace the shadows creatively, shoot black and white

Direction of Light

• Front light: Even illumination, minimal shadows, can feel flat
• Side light: Dramatic, reveals texture, creates depth (great for landscapes and dramatic portraits)
• Backlight: Creates rim lighting, silhouettes, and lens flare. Expose for the subject to avoid silhouette (unless that's the goal).
• Top light: Unflattering for faces (overhead noon sun), but can create drama in other subjects
• Bottom light (uplighting): Unnatural, eerie (campfire effect)

Quality of Light

• Hard light: Direct, creates sharp shadows (bare bulb, direct sun, spotlight)
• Soft light: Diffused, creates gentle shadows (overcast sky, window light, softbox)
• The larger the light source relative to the subject, the softer the light.
  • A window close to a face = large, soft light
  • The sun = tiny, hard light (it's huge but very far away)

Studio Lighting Basics

One-Light Setup (the most versatile):

• Place a single light at 45 degrees to the subject, slightly above eye level
• Add a reflector on the opposite side to fill shadows
• This produces classic "Rembrandt lighting" (triangle of light on the shadow-side cheek)

Key Light Patterns:

Phone Photography Tips

Smartphones are incredibly capable cameras. Here's how to maximize them:

1. Clean your lens. Seriously. Wipe it on your shirt. Fingerprints cause haze and reduce sharpness.
2. Use the grid overlay. Enable it in camera settings for rule-of-thirds alignment.
3. Tap to focus and expose. Tap your subject on screen. On iPhone, press and hold to lock focus/exposure (AE/AF Lock).
4. Avoid digital zoom. It degrades quality. Move your feet instead, or crop in editing.
5. Use portrait mode wisely. It simulates depth of field but can fail on complex edges (hair, glasses). Check the edges.
6. Shoot in good light. Phone sensors are small - they struggle more in low light than dedicated cameras.
7. Use HDR mode. It balances bright skies and dark foregrounds.
8. Shoot RAW if available. ProRAW (iPhone) or RAW mode (Android) gives much more editing flexibility.
9. Use the 0.5x (ultrawide) lens creatively. Great for architecture, interiors, and dramatic perspective.
10. Hold steady. Brace your elbows against your body. Lean against a wall. Use a timer instead of tapping the shutter.

Editing Basics

The Editing Workflow

1. Cull: Choose your best shots. Be ruthless. One great photo beats twenty okay ones.
2. Crop and straighten: Fix composition. Straighten horizons.
3. Exposure: Adjust overall brightness.
4. White balance: Correct color temperature (warm/cool).
5. Contrast: Adjust the range between lights and darks.
6. Highlights and shadows: Recover detail in bright and dark areas.
7. Clarity/texture: Add midtone contrast for punch (or reduce for softness).
8. Saturation/vibrance: Vibrance is more subtle (boosts muted colors without oversaturating already-vivid ones).
9. Sharpening: Apply at the end, sparingly.
10. Export: Save at appropriate resolution for your use case.

Common Editing Mistakes

• Over-saturation: If it looks like a cartoon, dial it back
• Over-sharpening: Creates halos and an artificial, crunchy look
• Crushing blacks: Losing all shadow detail. Keep some texture.
• HDR overkill: The surreal, hyper-detailed look rarely serves the image
• Over-smoothing skin: Preserve texture. People have pores.

Portrait Photography
