Fundamentals: Technique and Posture

Sitting Position

• Sit at the front half of the bench, not leaning against the back
• Bench height: forearms roughly parallel to the floor when hands are on keys. Elbows slightly above key level.
• Distance from piano: with arms extended, fingertips should reach the fallboard (key cover). You should not be reaching.
• Feet flat on the floor (or on a footrest for children). Right foot near the sustain pedal.
• Spine upright but not rigid. Shoulders relaxed and dropped.

Hand Position

• Imagine holding a small ball or letting your hand hang naturally at your side -- that is the relaxed curved shape
• Fingertips contact the keys (not the flat pads of the fingers)
• Knuckle bridge (the large knuckles at the base of the fingers) should be the highest point of the hand
• Thumb plays on its side corner, not flat
• Wrist aligned with the forearm -- neither dropped below the keys nor raised above them
• No tension in the hand, wrist, forearm, or shoulder. If you feel tension, stop and reset.

Finger Numbering

• Thumb = 1 (both hands)
• Index = 2
• Middle = 3
• Ring = 4
• Pinky = 5

Fingering is marked in sheet music above or below notes. Following correct fingering from the beginning prevents bad habits that are difficult to correct later.

Touch and Tone Production

The piano responds to how you press the key, not just whether you press it:

• Speed of key descent: Faster = louder (forte), slower = softer (piano)
• Weight transfer: Drop arm weight into the key from the shoulder. Do not press from the finger alone.
• Release: How you lift affects the sound's ending. Abrupt release = staccato. Gradual lift = legato connection.
