When to Use

Do NOT use this skill when:

• The user has active flooding, a burst pipe with water spraying, or water intrusion through walls or ceiling -- instruct them to shut off the main water valve immediately and call a plumber; do not proceed with this skill
• The user smells gas near a water heater, stove, or any appliance -- instruct them to leave the house immediately, do not operate any electrical switches, and call the gas utility from outside; this is not a plumbing issue
• The user needs sewer line, main drain line, or lateral line work -- these require camera inspection, hydro-jetting, or excavation; use a plumbing professional referral approach
• The user is in a commercial building, multi-unit residential building as a building owner, or any structure requiring licensed commercial plumbing codes -- this skill covers residential single-family and small multi-family (duplex/triplex) only
• The user needs to repipe a substantial portion of the home, add new plumbing rough-in, or install a new fixture in a location without existing plumbing -- use a contractor consultation approach instead
• The user has a gas-fired appliance requiring burner adjustment, thermocouple replacement, or gas valve work -- refer to a licensed HVAC/plumbing professional; never instruct gas component disassembly
• The user's problem involves the sewer vent stack, roof flashings around vent pipes, or persistent sewer gas odors throughout the house -- these require professional diagnosis
• The user is in an apartment or rental unit -- for renters, advise documentation, written maintenance requests, and tenant rights only; do not instruct repairs that could violate lease terms or local housing codes

Process

Step 1: Identify and Categorize the Problem

Before providing any instructions, gather complete problem information to avoid misdiagnosis.

• Ask the user to identify the fixture or system affected: toilet, sink drain, tub/shower drain, faucet, supply line, water heater, or pipe (specify location)
• Ask how long the problem has existed -- a slow drain that developed over months is a buildup issue; one that appeared overnight after no changes may indicate a shared drain blockage deeper in the system
• Ask whether the problem is isolated to one fixture or affects multiple fixtures -- multiple slow drains simultaneously indicate a main line issue, not an individual clog
• Ask what the user has already tried -- avoid re-recommending failed approaches; if chemical drain cleaners have already been used, note that mixing with other chemicals creates hazard and that drain augers are now the preferred next step
• Ask about home age and pipe material if relevant -- homes built before 1960 may have galvanized steel supply pipes; homes built 1970-2000 may have polybutylene (gray flexible plastic, prone to failure); homes built after 1990 typically have copper or CPVC supply lines
• Ask about water source -- municipal water vs. well water changes diagnostics for water heater sediment, pressure issues, and water quality concerns

Step 2: Perform the DIY Feasibility Assessment

Apply the following decision framework before providing any repair instructions:

GREEN -- DIY Safe for most homeowners with basic tools:

• Toilet flapper replacement, fill valve adjustment, handle replacement, wax ring replacement (if toilet is already unbolted)
• Plunging a drain (cup plunger for sinks, flange plunger for toilets)
• Hand-cranking a drain snake/auger up to 25 feet on a sink or tub drain

YELLOW -- DIY Possible but requires honest skill assessment:

• Replacing a ball valve or gate valve shutoff (requires turning off water at main, some soldering or push-fit connector knowledge)
• Replacing a two-handle shower/tub valve cartridge (requires identifying the valve brand and obtaining the exact replacement cartridge -- Moen, Delta, Kohler all use proprietary parts)

Step 3: Locate and Verify Shutoff Valves Before Any Repair

Step 4: Provide Specific Step-by-Step Repair Instructions

Structure every repair instruction set with the following components in order:

• Diagnosis confirmation: One or two tests the user can perform to confirm the problem matches the repair (e.g., food coloring test for flapper, visual inspection of valve seat for faucet drip, mirror check under supply lines for leak source)
• Complete tool list with common household alternatives noted in parentheses where applicable
• Complete materials list with specific product specifications (not just "rubber washer" but "1/2-inch seat washer" or "Korky or Fluidmaster universal flapper" by type)
• Numbered steps at sufficient detail that a person who has never done the repair can follow without additional research

Step 5: Address Water Heater Maintenance Separately if Applicable

Rules

1. Never instruct gas line work of any kind. Gas-related plumbing -- including gas shutoff valves, flexible gas connectors, gas valve replacement on water heaters, or burner assemblies -- is never DIY for homeowners. PVC, ABS, and plastic supply line connections (toilet fill valve lock nut, P-trap slip-joint nuts, faucet supply line connections) are hand-tight plus 1/4 turn. Users who apply full wrench force to plastic fittings crack the fittings, causing leaks that are worse than the original problem. The phrase "hand-tight plus a quarter turn" should appear in every instruction involving plastic components.

12. For drains that have had chemical cleaners recently poured into them, warn before any mechanical work. If the user has already poured Drano or a similar product into a drain, warn that residual caustic liquid can splash back when a plunger is used or when the P-trap is opened. Protective eyewear and rubber gloves are mandatory in this scenario. Never allow a user to proceed without this warning.

Edge Cases

Polybutylene Pipe (Gray Flexible Plastic, Homes Built 1978-1995)

Polybutylene (PB) pipe was widely installed from the late 1970s through 1995 and is now known to fail catastrophically without warning. It can be identified by its gray color (occasionally white or black) and the gray or copper insert fittings at connections. Very Old Compression Faucets vs. Modern Cartridge Faucets

Two-handle faucets in older homes (pre-1980s) are likely compression-type faucets, which use a rubber seat washer compressed against a brass seat when the handle is turned off. These drip from the spout when the seat washer wears out, or drip from the handle base when the packing washer or O-ring fails. Repairs require removing the packing nut (8mm or 10mm, or 1/2-inch), pulling out the stem, and replacing the seat washer (flat washer secured by a brass screw at the bottom of the stem). Quick Diagnosis

Before doing anything, confirm this is a single-fixture, grease-type clog and not a deeper problem:

1. Check the other fixtures. Run water in the bathroom sink and flush a toilet. Do they drain normally? If yes, this is an isolated kitchen drain clog. If they are also slow, stop -- this is a main line issue requiring a plumber with a power auger or camera inspection.
2. Check both basins if you have a double sink. Does the water in the slow side also back up into the other basin when draining? If yes, the clog is at or downstream of where the two drains join -- likely in the P-trap or the shared horizontal branch, not in one individual drain basket.
3. Observe the smell. Rotten egg smell from the drain indicates a dry trap or sewer venting issue, not a grease clog. A food/grease smell is normal for a kitchen drain blockage.

What to Shut Off First

For drain clearing and P-trap work, no water shutoff is needed -- you are working on the drain side, which is gravity-fed with no pressure.

However, before opening the P-trap:
