When to Use

Use this skill when:

• A user is preparing to record a podcast interview and needs a structured question flow for a specific guest, including openers, primary questions with probes, and a closing sequence
• A user has a confirmed podcast guest and wants to avoid going into the interview cold -- they need a navigation document that supports spontaneity while preventing the interview from going flat or off-track
• A user wants follow-up probe language written in advance so they do not freeze when a guest gives an unexpected or incomplete answer
• A user needs a lightning round or rapid-fire segment designed specifically around their guest's background and personality
• A user is preparing for an interview on a sensitive, controversial, or highly technical topic and needs framing language, challenge probes, and redirect phrases calibrated for that context
• A user is a first-time podcast host who has content expertise but has never structured a long-form interview and needs a professional-grade blueprint
• A user wants to distinguish between "must-ask" and "if-time-permits" questions so the interview can flex with the guest's energy without losing the core thesis

Do NOT use this skill when:

• The user needs full episode structure with segment timing, ad placements, intro/outro scripting, or show notes -- use podcast-episode-planning instead
• The user needs audio production decisions: microphone settings, room treatment, compression thresholds, loudness normalization to -16 LUFS for streaming, or DAW workflow -- use audio-editing-guide instead
• The user is preparing for a job interview, media training session, or any non-podcast interview context -- use interview-prep instead
• The user needs a panel discussion format with multiple guests, rotating questions, or moderation protocols -- panel interviews have fundamentally different dynamics (managing airtime, preventing crosstalk, directing follow-ups to specific speakers) and require a separate approach
• The user is creating a scripted, fully written-out interview where every word is pre-approved (common in branded content and advertorial podcasts) -- this skill produces a guide for live, unscripted conversation, not a teleprompter script
• The user needs a guest pitch template or booking process document -- that is pre-production logistics, not interview design

Process

Step 1: Gather Interview Context (Required Inputs Before Writing Anything)

• Collect the guest's full name, current title, and primary domain of expertise -- do not guess; the opener questions depend on knowing what is actually public and attributable
• Identify the guest's most recent and most notable work: book title and publication year, most-cited article or research, notable company they founded or led, or a recent public talk or interview -- this research informs question specificity
• Define the episode thesis in one sentence. The thesis is NOT the topic. The topic is "burnout in remote work." The thesis is "Remote workers experience burnout differently than office workers because the boundary collapse happens invisibly -- and conventional productivity advice makes it worse." Every primary question should advance this thesis
• Get the interview duration in minutes -- the conversation portion only, not the full episode. A 25-minute interview has capacity for 5-6 primary questions at 3-4 minutes each. A 45-minute interview can support 8-10 questions. A 60-minute interview should not exceed 12 primary questions or it becomes a checklist interrogation
• Identify the audience knowledge level on a three-tier scale:
  • Beginner: Define all jargon on first use, avoid assumed context, favor analogies and stories over data
  • Intermediate: Skip foundational definitions, favor nuance and application, push past the headline answer
  • Advanced: Assume shared vocabulary, challenge assumptions, go straight to the contested or unsettled questions in the field
• Ask what the host already knows about the topic deeply -- do NOT write questions the host can answer themselves. The interview is for the guest's knowledge, not the host's performance

Step 2: Design Rapport-Building Openers (2-3 Questions)

• The first question in a podcast interview does two jobs: it relaxes the guest AND it signals to the audience why this person is worth 30 minutes of their time. Generic openers ("Tell us about your background") waste both
• Reference something specific and verifiable from the guest's public record: the opening line of their book, a counterintuitive claim from a recent talk, a career pivot they made publicly, or a thread they posted that generated significant discussion
• The ideal first question is one the guest has strong feelings about but has not been asked in exactly this way -- it signals the host did real preparation
• The second opener should bridge the personal or professional backstory to the episode thesis. It is a transition question, not a deep-dive question
• Avoid questions that begin with "So you are..." or "As someone who..." -- these are filler phrases that delay the actual question. Get to the question faster
• Avoid yes/no openers. "Did you always want to work in this field?" can be answered in two words. "What was the moment you realized you were going in a different direction than your peers in this field?" cannot
• If the guest is highly credentialed and well-known, do not spend all three openers on credentials -- the audience already knows. Use opener space to reveal something unexpected about how they think

Step 3: Write Primary Topic Questions (5-10 Questions)

• Structure primary questions in a three-act narrative arc:
  • Act One (Context Questions, 1-2 questions): Establish the problem, tension, or landscape. Why does this topic matter now? What is broken, misunderstood, or overlooked?
  • Act Two (Insight Questions, 2-4 questions): The guest's specific thinking, framework, or methodology. This is the core of the interview -- where the unique perspective lives
  • Act Three (Application Questions, 1-3 questions): What does the listener do with this? Concrete actions, common mistakes, and what good looks like in practice
• Write every primary question as an open-ended question that requires the guest to think, not recall. "What is your framework for X?" is better than "Do you have a framework for X?"
• For each primary question, write exactly 3 follow-up probes and assign them types:
  • Depth probe: Forces the guest past the polished, rehearsed answer into a specific example. Phrasing: "Walk me through a specific time when..." or "Give me a concrete example of..."
  • Challenge probe: Introduces the strongest counterargument to the guest's position. Phrasing: "The pushback I hear most often is [specific objection]. How do you respond to that?" -- the challenge must be real and specific, not strawman
  • Application probe: Translates the insight into listener action. Phrasing: "If someone listening wants to do this starting Monday, what is the first thing they should actually do?" or "What does getting this right look like in practice?"
• Mark every question as "must-ask" or "if-time-permits." A 25-minute interview should have no more than 4 "must-ask" questions. A 45-minute interview can support 6-7. "If-time-permits" questions are not padding -- they are the questions that make a great interview very good, but the interview is complete without them
• Avoid double-barreled questions: "What made you write the book, and what do you hope readers take away?" This forces the guest to choose which question to answer and the host to choose which answer to follow up on. Split every compound question into two separate questions and pick the better one
• Questions should escalate in depth. The last "must-ask" primary question should be harder to answer than the first

Step 4: Build the Active Listening Toolkit

• Active listening language must be written out in full before the interview -- hosts who improvise these phrases in the moment often default to filler words, awkward repetition, or worse, talking over the guest
• Write at least 6 scenario phrases covering:
  • Agreement signal (non-interruption): Ultra-short verbal acknowledgment used while the guest is still talking. Must not be a full sentence. Acceptable: "Mm-hmm," "Right," "Yeah," "Interesting," "That tracks." Unacceptable: "Oh wow, that is so fascinating!" -- this pulls focus
  • Clarification request: Used when the guest uses jargon, a proprietary term, or a concept that a portion of the audience will not know. Phrase it as a service to the audience, not a challenge to the guest: "For listeners who have not encountered that term before, can you define what you mean by [term]?"
  • Redirect from tangent: Used when the guest has gone 2+ minutes in a direction unrelated to the episode thesis. The phrase must acknowledge the tangent as valuable before pivoting: "That is a thread I want to come back to -- let me bookmark it. But first I want to ask about [specific question]."
  • Non-answer recovery: When the guest answers a different question than the one asked, or gives a vague response. Do not repeat the question verbatim -- that sounds confrontational. Rephrase with a specific scenario: "Let me come at it from a different angle. If you were in a room with [specific situation], what would you actually do?"
  • Extend strong answer: When the guest says something unexpectedly insightful mid-answer. The host's instinct is to move to the next question -- resist this. Instead, repeat the exact phrase the guest used and ask them to go deeper: "You just said [their exact words]. I want to stay here for a moment. What do you mean by that?"
  • Energy recovery: When the guest gives a short, flat, or low-energy answer and the conversation needs a reset. Do not push on the same question. Shift register: "Let me try this from your personal experience rather than the theoretical. Has there been a moment in your own career when...?"
• Customize the clarification phrase to the guest's domain -- the exact jargon fields will be specific to the episode topic

Step 5: Design the Lightning Round (3-6 Questions)

• The lightning round has a specific structural purpose: it shifts the interview register from expert-to-audience to person-to-person. It reveals personality, opinions, and humor that formal questions cannot
• Placement matters: the lightning round works best at 70-80% through the interview, not at the very end. Placing it at the end makes it feel like filler after the real content is done. Placing it at 70-80% gives the conversation a burst of energy before the closing sequence
• Question types for an effective lightning round:
  • Tool/resource question: "One resource -- book, tool, framework -- that professionals in your field underuse?" -- reveals genuine expertise
  • Contrarian opinion: "What is one widely held belief in [guest's field] that you think is wrong?" -- reveals independent thinking
  • Personal habit: "One habit or ritual that changed how you work?" -- reveals character
  • Failure question: "What is the most expensive mistake you have made in your career?" -- reveals self-awareness (only include if the guest's public persona supports this level of candor)
  • Prediction: "What will be completely different about [their field] in 10 years that most people are not taking seriously now?"
• Each lightning round question must be answerable in 1-2 sentences. If a question requires more than 2 sentences to answer well, it belongs in the primary questions section
• Write the exact transition phrase that introduces the lightning round -- this is the moment the host signals a gear shift. It must be energetic and brief: "Alright -- I want to try something. Quick-fire round. First answer that comes to mind. Ready?"
• Do not use the lightning round to sneak in a primary question the host forgot to ask. Lightning round questions are genuinely different in character -- playful, opinionated, fast

Step 6: Write the Closing Sequence

• The closing sequence has four mandatory components in this order: final reflection question, guest promotion, personalized thank-you, and transition to outro
• Final reflection question: This is the guest's last word. It should be open enough to capture whatever insight has emerged during the conversation that the host did not anticipate. The best final question is: "What is the one thing you want someone who listened to this whole conversation to actually do or think differently about?" -- it forces the guest to synthesize and it gives the audience a clear takeaway
• Guest promotion: Always ask where people can find the guest's work. Keep it simple and direct: "Where can people find your book / your work / follow what you are doing?" -- do not pepper this with multiple platform-specific questions. One question, let the guest list their preferred channels
• Personalized thank-you: The thank-you must reference something specific the guest said during the interview -- a phrase, an idea, or a story. "Thank you, [Name] -- the idea that [specific thing they said] is one of those reframes I think will stick with our listeners for a while" is a professional close. "Thanks for being here, this was great!" is a wasted moment
• Transition to outro: Write the exact phrase that hands off to the episode outro. This depends on whether there is a co-host, a produced outro, or just the solo host wrapping: "That was [Guest Name]. Links to [their book / their site / their work] are in the show notes below. I will be back [cadence -- next week, next episode, Thursday] with [brief tease of next episode topic]"

Step 7: Assemble and Review the Full Guide

• Review the full question set end-to-end as if you are the guest hearing these questions for the first time. Do any questions feel like traps? Do any feel too easy? Do any reveal information the guest might be uncomfortable with?
• Check the narrative arc: does each primary question advance the episode thesis, or does any question exist just because it is interesting? Remove or reschedule any question that does not serve the thesis
• Count total questions: openers (2-3) + primary must-ask (4-7) + primary if-time-permits (1-3) + lightning round (3-6) + closing (1) = a complete guide. If the total primary question count exceeds 10, cut the weakest "if-time-permits" questions
• Add a time-check annotation after every third primary question for longer interviews: "[Check time. If behind by more than 3 minutes, move to Q6 and skip Q5.]" -- this keeps the host oriented without requiring constant mental math during the recording
• The final guide should be printable on 2-3 pages or readable on a single monitor split-screen. If it does not fit, it is too long

Rules

1. Never write yes/no primary questions. Every primary question must structurally require a multi-sentence answer. Test each question by imagining the guest answering "Yes" or "No" -- if that is possible, rewrite the question. "Do you think accessibility is undervalued?" fails. "What does the design industry lose by treating accessibility as a compliance exercise rather than a craft skill?" cannot be answered in one word.

2. Every primary question must have exactly the depth/challenge/application probe structure. Hosts who only write "follow-up questions" often write three depth probes and forget to challenge the guest or land the insight for the audience. The three-type structure forces balance. If-time-permits questions may have only 2 probes, but must-ask questions always have all 3.

3. The episode thesis must be written before any questions are written. Questions written without a thesis wander. Every primary question, when read in sequence, should feel like a structured argument for the thesis. If a question does not advance the thesis, it is either an opener, a lightning round question, or it should be cut.

4. Openers must reference something specific and verifiable. "I heard you spoke at a conference recently" is not specific. "You opened your keynote at [event] by saying [specific claim] -- that caught a lot of attention" is specific. If the research has not been done to write a specific opener, flag it and ask the user for the relevant source material before drafting.

5. Do not exceed 10 primary questions for any interview length. Research on long-form interview pacing consistently shows that beyond 10 primary questions, hosts begin rushing answers, skipping probes, and the guest feels interrogated rather than interviewed. A 60-minute interview with 7 deep, well-probed questions is more valuable than a 60-minute interview with 12 surface questions.

6. Mark time-check annotations in the guide at the 30%, 60%, and 80% marks. A 25-minute interview should have a time-check after Q2 (approximately 8 minutes), after Q4 (approximately 16 minutes), and before the lightning round (approximately 20 minutes). These annotations tell the host which questions to skip, not which to rush.

7. Lightning round questions must be categorically different from primary questions. A lightning round question about the guest's professional methodology belongs in Act Two primary questions. Lightning round questions should be answerable by someone who knows nothing about the field -- they are about the guest's personality, preferences, and instincts, not their expertise.

8. The active listening toolkit must use exact phrases, not categories. Writing "have a redirect phrase ready" is useless. Writing "That is a thread I want to honor -- let me bookmark it. But first --" is a phrase a host can rehearse and execute. Every toolkit entry must be a sentence or phrase that can be read aloud and sound natural.

9. The personalized thank-you cannot be written as a blank placeholder. Write a likely version based on the interview guide's strongest anticipated insight. Example: "If the guest delivers on Q3 about [topic], the thank-you might be: 'Thank you, [Name] -- the idea that [likely insight] is one of those things I cannot unhear now.'" Hosts who leave the thank-you blank default to "this was amazing" which is neither professional nor memorable.

10. The guide is a navigation document, not a script. Questions are written to be read and internalized before recording, not read aloud verbatim during the interview. If a question sounds unnatural when read aloud at normal speaking pace, rewrite it. Every question should be something the host could ask naturally in a dinner conversation, not something that sounds like it was typed into a text field.

Edge Cases

Guest Who Has Heard Every Standard Question in Their Field

This happens with authors on book tour, researchers who do 30+ interviews per year, and founders who have repeated the same origin story so many times they can deliver it on autopilot. The tell is an answer that feels memorized: it is polished, complete, and reveals nothing new.

Handling: Research the guest's previous 3-5 interviews and write down every question they were asked. Then deliberately do not ask any of those questions. Instead, find the gap -- the angle, the tension, or the chapter of the book that no one has asked about. Ask about the thing they had to cut, the idea they are not sure about, the conclusion they reached that surprised them. Use the opener to signal directly: "I went back through some of your recent interviews before this one, and I noticed no one has asked you about [specific thing]. I want to start there."

Guest Who Is a Subject Matter Expert but Not a Communicator

Technical founders, researchers, and practitioners often have profound expertise but have not developed the habit of translating that expertise for non-specialist audiences. Their answers will be accurate, jargon-dense, and difficult to follow.

Handling: Add a "translation prompt" after every Insight-tier question: a ready-made phrase the host can deploy immediately after a jargon-heavy answer: "I want to make sure our listeners who are not [field specialists] can follow this. If you had to explain what you just described to a smart 15-year-old, how would you put it?" Do not ask this for every question -- reserve it for the 1-2 questions where the jargon risk is highest. Also add a "jargon flag" annotation next to any question that is likely to elicit technical vocabulary, so the host is primed to deploy the translation prompt.

Guest Who Pivots Every Answer Into a Promotion

Some guests -- particularly those on book tours, selling courses, or building a personal brand -- will redirect every answer toward their product or a promotional message. This is the podcasting equivalent of an interviewee who answers every question with a talking point.

Handling: The redirect phrase must be calibrated specifically for this pattern. A standard tangent redirect ("Let me bookmark that") does not work here because the guest is not going off-topic -- they are replacing the answer with a pitch. The correct phrase is: "I appreciate that -- and we will absolutely make sure people know where to find [product] at the end. But for right now, I want to get at the underlying idea: [restate the question more specifically, with a scenario that requires a personal answer rather than a general one]." Write 2 versions of this phrase in the toolkit for any guest where this risk is elevated. Flag the risk based on whether the guest is actively promoting something at the time of the interview.

Interview on a Topic Where the Host Has Stronger Opinions Than the Guest

Occasionally a host is the actual domain expert and the guest was booked for their adjacent perspective or personal story. The risk is that the host overrides the guest, corrects them, or fills silence with the host's own analysis.

Handling: Add a "host discipline note" to the active listening toolkit: "Your job in this interview is to draw out the guest's perspective, not advance your own. When you feel the urge to correct, reframe it as a question: 'I have heard a different view on this -- that [your actual view]. What is your response to that framing?' When you feel the urge to fill silence, do not. Count to 3 after the guest stops talking before speaking. The best podcast moments often emerge in that pause."

Interview That Must Cover Sensitive Personal History (Illness, Loss, Failure, Controversy)

Some episode angles require going into territory the guest may not have discussed publicly before, or may have discussed but not fully processed. The host who barrels into this without care gets a shut-down guest. The host who avoids it produces a shallow interview.

Handling: Add a "sensitive territory protocol" to the guide:

• Flag the specific question as "requires consent check" in the pre-recording warm-up. During warm-up, say: "One of the things I would love to explore, if you are open to it, is [topic]. If that is not something you want to get into today, completely fine -- just let me know."
• Write a softer version of the question that approaches the same territory less directly: rather than "Tell me about the hardest moment of that experience," try "What did that period teach you that you could not have learned any other way?"
• Write an exit ramp phrase for the host to use if the guest becomes visibly distressed: "I really appreciate you going there. Let us take a breath and come back to [safer topic]."
• Never include a challenge probe for questions in sensitive territory. The emotional weight of the question is sufficient. The challenge probe belongs on intellectual or professional questions.

Interview Being Recorded Remotely Over Video Call

Remote recording introduces specific technical and conversational risks that in-person recording does not: audio lag causes crosstalk, visual cues are reduced, connection issues interrupt the flow, and both host and guest are managing their own recording setups simultaneously.

Handling: Add a "remote recording note" at the top of the guide:

• Add 5-10% more questions to account for content lost to technical issues
• Write an "interruption recovery" phrase for the active listening toolkit: "Apologies -- I think we overlapped there. I want to make sure we get your full answer. You were saying [last phrase you heard clearly]..."
• Note which questions are most suited to the start of the interview (when technical issues are most likely to be resolved) versus which can flex toward the middle or end
• Remind the host to pause 1 full second after the guest finishes speaking before responding -- this is standard good practice but becomes critical over remote connections where lag makes overlapping easy

Return Guest (Has Been on the Podcast Before)

A returning guest presents both an advantage and a risk: the rapport is already established, but the audience may have heard the guest's foundational material already. Repeating the origin story or restating positions from the last episode wastes the audience's investment.

Handling: Open with a mandatory callback to the previous episode's most cited or memorable moment: "Last time you were here, you said [specific quote or claim]. That episode got a lot of response. Has your thinking evolved on that at all?" This signals to the audience that this is a continuation, not a repeat. Skip all credential-establishing questions entirely -- the audience knows who this person is. Reduce openers to 1, go directly into primary questions, and push the challenge probes harder than you would with a first-time guest. Increase the proportion of "if-time-permits" questions because the rapport makes it easier to follow unexpected threads.

Example

Input: "Create an interview guide for a podcast interview with a behavioral economist named Dr. Priya Anand who just published a book called 'The Effort Illusion' about why people systematically overestimate how much effort tasks require -- which is why they procrastinate, avoid starting, and undercharge for their work. The episode thesis is that procrastination is not a motivation problem, it is a perception problem. Interview is 35 minutes. Audience is intermediate -- familiar with concepts like cognitive bias and behavioral economics but not specialists."

Q1 (must-ask) -- Act One: Context Most people who struggle with procrastination have been told it is a motivation problem -- they do not want it badly enough, they lack discipline, they need a better system. You argue the diagnosis is wrong. What is actually happening when someone keeps not starting a task?
