Poetic Forms Reference

Sonnet

Shakespearean (English) Sonnet:

Haiku

Traditional Japanese Form:

• Three lines: 5-7-5 syllables (in English; the Japanese count morae, which differ from syllables)
• Captures a moment in nature
• Contains a kireji (cutting word) that creates a pause or juxtaposition
• Includes a kigo (seasonal reference)

Modern English Haiku:

• Many contemporary poets relax the 5-7-5 rule
• Focus on brevity, a single vivid image, and a moment of perception
• The juxtaposition of two images is more important than syllable count

Example (Basho, translated):

Senryu: Same form as haiku but focuses on human nature rather than the natural world; often humorous or ironic.

Villanelle

Structure:

• 19 lines: five tercets (3-line stanzas) and one quatrain (4-line stanza)
• Two refrains: Line 1 (A1) and Line 3 (A2) alternate as the final line of each tercet
• Both refrains appear as the final two lines of the closing quatrain
• Rhyme scheme: ABA ABA ABA ABA ABA ABAA

Tips:

Free Verse

No fixed meter, rhyme scheme, or line length - but NOT "anything goes."

Free verse relies on:

• Line breaks: Where you break the line controls pacing, emphasis, and meaning
• Enjambment vs. end-stopped lines: Running a sentence across line breaks creates momentum; ending lines with punctuation creates pause
• Internal rhythm: Even without formal meter, strong free verse has a musical quality

• Image and metaphor: Without formal constraints, the image carries even more weight

Limerick

Structure:

• Five lines with AABBA rhyme scheme
• Lines 1, 2, 5: approximately 8 syllables (anapestic trimeter)
• Lines 3, 4: approximately 5 syllables (anapestic dimeter)
• Traditionally humorous, often bawdy

Ode

A lyric poem addressing a subject with elevated language and deep feeling.

Types:

• Pindaric Ode: Structured in triads (strophe, antistrophe, epode); grand and ceremonial
• Horatian Ode: Calm, meditative, regular stanzas; more personal and reflective
• Irregular Ode: No fixed structure; the most common modern form (Keats, Neruda)

Tips: Choose a subject you feel genuine awe, love, or fascination for. The ode works best when the poet's passion is authentic.

Additional Forms

Ghazal: Couplets (usually 5-12), each self-contained; both lines of the first couplet and the second line of every subsequent couplet share the same rhyme and refrain. Themes of love and loss.

Pantoum: Quatrains where lines 2 and 4 of each stanza become lines 1 and 3 of the next. Creates a dreamlike, recursive quality.

Sestina: Six stanzas of six lines plus a three-line envoi. Six end-words rotate through a fixed pattern. A demanding form that rewards obsessive revision.

Prose Poem: A poem written in paragraph form without line breaks. Relies on density of language, imagery, and rhythm rather than visual structure.

Acrostic: The first letter of each line spells a word or message. Can be a playful constraint or a way to embed hidden meaning.

Understanding Meter

Meter is the pattern of stressed (/) and unstressed (u) syllables:

Scanning a Line

To scan a line of poetry (identify its meter):

1. Read it aloud naturally - don't force a rhythm
2. Mark the syllables you naturally stress
3. Look for a pattern of feet
4. Name the dominant foot and the number of feet

Using Meter Expressively

• Regular meter creates a sense of order, formality, or calm
• Breaking the meter (substitution) draws attention to a word or moment
• A spondee in the middle of iambic verse creates sudden weight

Imagery and Metaphor

Types of Figurative Language

• Simile: Direct comparison using "like" or "as" - "Her voice was like gravel in a tumbler"
• Metaphor: Implicit comparison - "Her voice was gravel, rough and rolling"
• Extended Metaphor (Conceit): A metaphor sustained across multiple lines or an entire poem
• Personification: Giving human qualities to non-human things - "The wind whispered secrets"
• Synecdoche: A part represents the whole - "All hands on deck"

Building Strong Images

1. Be specific. Not "a flower" but "a wilting peony, its petals the color of a bruise"
2. Engage multiple senses. The best images layer visual, tactile, auditory, and olfactory details
3. Make the familiar strange. The best metaphors reframe something known in an unexpected way
4. Avoid cliches. If you've heard it before, push further. "Quiet as a mouse" - what else is quiet? Quiet as a held breath. Quiet as snow falling on snow.
5. Trust the image. Don't explain what the image means. Let it work on the reader.

The Objective Correlative (T.S. Eliot)

Instead of naming an emotion, present the objects, situations, and sensory details that evoke that emotion in the reader. Don't say "I was sad." Show the reader the empty chair, the cold coffee, the clock that keeps ticking.

Sound Devices

Alliteration

Repetition of initial consonant sounds: "Peter Piper picked a peck"

• Creates rhythm and emphasis
• Hard consonants (k, t, p) can feel sharp or forceful
• Soft consonants (l, m, s) can feel gentle or flowing

Assonance

Repetition of vowel sounds within words: "the rain in Spain stays mainly"

• Creates internal music and cohesion
• Long vowels (oh, ee, ay) can slow a line
• Short vowels (ih, uh, eh) can quicken pace

Consonance

Repetition of consonant sounds anywhere in words: "stroke of luck"

• Subtler than alliteration; creates an undercurrent of sound

Onomatopoeia

Words that sound like what they describe: buzz, hiss, crash, murmur, sizzle

Euphony and Cacophony

• Euphony: Pleasing, harmonious sounds (liquid consonants, long vowels)
• Cacophony: Harsh, discordant sounds (hard consonants, short vowels, consonant clusters)
• Match sound to subject: write beautifully about beautiful things, harshly about harsh ones

Rhyme Types

• Perfect rhyme: moon/June, love/dove
• Slant rhyme (near rhyme): moon/bone, love/move
• Eye rhyme: love/prove (look alike, sound different)
• Internal rhyme: Rhyme within a single line
• Masculine rhyme: Single stressed syllable (cat/hat)

Poetry Analysis Framework

When analyzing a poem (your own or another's), work through these layers:

1. First Impression

Read the poem once without analyzing. What do you feel? What images linger? What confuses you?

2. Form and Structure

• Is it a recognized form? What does that form contribute?
• How long are the stanzas? Are they regular or irregular?
• Where are the line breaks? What effect do they create?
• Is there a volta or turn?

3. Sound and Music

• Is there a dominant meter? Where does it break?
• What rhyme scheme is used (if any)?
• Identify key sound devices and their effects
• Read aloud - what does the poem sound like?

4. Language and Imagery

• What are the central images or metaphors?
• Is the diction formal, colloquial, archaic, technical?
• What words carry the most weight?
• Are there words with double meanings or ambiguity?

5. Theme and Meaning

• What is the poem about on the surface?
• What deeper themes emerge?
• How do form, sound, and imagery work together to create meaning?
• What questions does the poem leave unanswered?

6. Context (when relevant)

• When and where was the poem written?
• How does the poet's biography inform the work?
• What literary tradition or movement does it belong to?

Writing Exercises

Exercise 1: The Five-Senses Poem

Choose a single memory. Write five lines, each dedicated to one sense. Then revise into a poem.

Exercise 2: Found Poetry

Take a page from a newspaper, manual, or textbook. Circle words and phrases that catch your eye. Arrange them into a poem without adding new words.

Exercise 3: The Constraint Poem

Write a poem with one of these constraints:

• Every line must contain a color
• No line may exceed five words
• Each stanza must begin with the last word of the previous stanza

Exercise 4: Imitation

Choose a poem you love. Write a new poem that mirrors its structure, rhythm, and line lengths but with completely different content.

Exercise 5: The Unsent Letter
