Pillar 1: Safety - Trust and Emotional Security

Understanding Attachment Patterns

Research suggests people develop patterns of relating in close relationships. Understanding your pattern (and your partner's) helps you respond with awareness rather than reactivity.

SECURE ATTACHMENT:
  "I am comfortable with closeness and independence."
  Behaviors: Communicates needs directly, handles conflict constructively,
  comfortable with intimacy and autonomy, trusts others while maintaining boundaries.

ANXIOUS ATTACHMENT:
  "I worry about being abandoned or not being enough."
  Behaviors: Seeks reassurance frequently, sensitive to distance or withdrawal,
  may become clingy or hypervigilant about the relationship, overthinks interactions.

AVOIDANT ATTACHMENT:
  "I value independence and feel overwhelmed by too much closeness."
  Behaviors: Pulls away when things get intense, minimizes emotional needs,
  values self-sufficiency, may seem emotionally distant or dismissive.

DISORGANIZED ATTACHMENT:
  "I want closeness but it also scares me."
  Behaviors: Inconsistent - sometimes seeking closeness, sometimes pushing away,
  often related to unresolved past experiences. May benefit most from professional support.

IMPORTANT: These are patterns, not permanent identities. Awareness enables change.
Attachment patterns exist on a spectrum and can shift with secure relationships and
intentional work (and often, therapy).

Building Safety in Relationships

Adapted from Gottman's research on trust:

TRUST-BUILDING ACTIONS (daily):
1. TURN TOWARD: When your partner/friend bids for attention, respond positively
   Bid: "Look at this sunset."
   Turning toward: "Wow, that is beautiful." (engage)
   Turning away: [continues scrolling phone] (ignore)
   Turning against: "You always interrupt me." (reject)

   Gottman's research: Couples who turned toward 86% of the time stayed together.
   Couples who turned toward 33% of the time divorced.

2. BE RELIABLE: Do what you say you will do. Consistently. In small things.
   Trust is built in tiny moments, not grand gestures.

3. BE EMOTIONALLY AVAILABLE: When they are upset, be present.
   You do not need to fix it. You need to be there.

4. RESPECT BOUNDARIES: "No" is a complete answer.
   Honoring boundaries builds safety faster than anything else.

5. SHOW VULNERABILITY: Share your fears, struggles, and uncertainties.
   Vulnerability invites vulnerability. Walls invite walls.

The Gottman Four Horsemen (Relationship Destroyers)

These four behaviors are the strongest predictors of relationship failure:

HORSEMAN 1: CRITICISM
  Attacking the person's character, not the behavior.
  Toxic: "You never think about anyone but yourself."
  Healthy alternative: "I felt hurt when you made plans without asking me.
  I need us to check in with each other about scheduling."

HORSEMAN 2: CONTEMPT
  Treating the other person with disrespect, mockery, or superiority.
  Toxic: Eye-rolling, sarcasm, name-calling, mocking their feelings.
  THE SINGLE STRONGEST PREDICTOR OF RELATIONSHIP FAILURE.
  Antidote: Build a culture of appreciation and respect.

HORSEMAN 3: DEFENSIVENESS
  Refusing to take responsibility; counter-attacking when receiving feedback.
  Toxic: "That is not my fault. If you had not done X, I would not have..."
  Healthy alternative: "You are right, I should have called. I am sorry."

HORSEMAN 4: STONEWALLING
  Withdrawing, shutting down, or refusing to engage.
  Toxic: Walking away mid-conversation, silent treatment, emotional shutdown.
  Note: Stonewalling often happens when someone is emotionally flooded.
  Healthy alternative: "I need a 20-minute break to calm down, but I want to
  continue this conversation. I will come back."

Pillar 2: Communication

The Emotional Intelligence Foundation

Before communicating about difficult topics, develop these EQ skills:

SELF-AWARENESS:     Can I name what I am feeling right now?
SELF-REGULATION:    Can I express my feelings without dumping or attacking?
EMPATHY:            Can I imagine what the other person is experiencing?
SOCIAL AWARENESS:   Am I reading the situation accurately?

Expressing Needs Effectively

THE EXPRESSION TEMPLATE:
"When [specific behavior/situation], I feel [emotion].
What I need is [specific request]."

EXAMPLES:
"When you check your phone during dinner, I feel unimportant.
What I need is your full attention for the 30 minutes we eat together."

"When deadlines change without warning, I feel stressed and disrespected.
What I need is 48 hours' notice when timelines shift."

"When we go weeks without spending time together, I feel disconnected.
What I need is a regular date night or dedicated time each week."

RULES:
- Describe behavior, not character ("when you arrive late" not "you are disrespectful")
- Own your feeling ("I feel" not "You make me feel")
- Make specific requests, not vague demands ("call me at lunch" not "be more attentive")

Active Listening in Relationships

LISTENING PROTOCOL:
1. PUT DOWN EVERYTHING: Phone, book, laptop. Full attention.
2. LISTEN TO UNDERSTAND, NOT TO RESPOND
   Resist the urge to formulate your reply while they are talking.
3. REFLECT: "What I hear you saying is..."
4. VALIDATE: "That makes sense because..." or "I can understand why you feel that way."
   (Validation is not agreement. You can validate their experience without sharing it.)
5. ASK: "Is there more?" or "What do you need from me?"
6. RESPOND: Only after they feel fully heard.

The Appreciation Practice

Adapted from the concept of expressing love in ways the other person receives it best:

APPRECIATION CHANNELS:
- WORDS:     Verbal affirmation, compliments, expressing gratitude
- TIME:      Undivided attention, shared experiences, being present
- ACTIONS:   Helping, doing things that make their life easier
- TOUCH:     Physical affection (appropriate to the relationship)
- GIFTS:     Thoughtful tokens that show you were thinking of them

EXERCISE: For each important relationship, identify:
1. How do they most naturally express care? _______________

DAILY PRACTICE: Express genuine appreciation to important people.
Be specific: "I appreciate that you made coffee this morning" is better
than "You are great." Specificity shows you are paying attention.

Pillar 3: Repair

Conflict Is Normal

THE TRUTH ABOUT HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS:
- All close relationships have conflict
- 69% of relationship problems are perpetual (Gottman research) - they never fully resolve
- The goal is not to eliminate conflict but to manage it constructively
- Repair AFTER conflict matters more than how the conflict went

The Repair Attempt

Gottman's research found that the ability to make and accept repair attempts is the strongest predictor of relationship success:

REPAIR ATTEMPTS (during or after conflict):
- Humor (appropriate, not dismissive): "I think we need a time-out before we say
  things we do not mean"
- Affection: "I love you even though we are arguing right now"
- Responsibility: "You are right about that part. I should have..."
- Common ground: "We both want the same thing here. Let us figure this out."
- De-escalation: "Can we start this conversation over?"
- Vulnerability: "I am scared that we are growing apart."

THE CRITICAL FACTOR: The receiving partner must ACCEPT repair attempts.
Rejecting repair attempts escalates conflict into destructive territory.

Common Relationship Mistakes

When to Seek Professional Help

CONSIDER COUPLES/RELATIONSHIP THERAPY WHEN:
- Communication has broken down despite genuine effort
