Writing Principles

The "grandmother test": Could a non-scientist relative understand the first three paragraphs? If not, simplify further.

Translation table:

Numbers that land:

• "Three times more likely" is clearer than "300% increase"
• "One in ten people" is clearer than "10% of the population"
• Compare to familiar things: "the size of a grain of sand" or "enough energy to power a city for a year"
• Always provide both absolute and relative numbers for health statistics

Lay Summaries

Purpose and Audience

Lay summaries translate research for non-specialist readers: patients, funders, policymakers, journalists, and the general public. Many funders and journals now require them.

Structure Template

Readability Techniques

• Sentences under 20 words on average

Pacing: You need fewer slides than you think. Plan for 1.5-2 minutes per slide. A 15-minute talk needs 8-10 slides, not 30.

Handling questions:

• "That's a great question" is filler; just answer the question
• If you don't know: "I don't have that data, but I'd love to discuss it afterward"
• If the question is hostile: restate it neutrally, answer what you can, move on
• Prepare for the three hardest questions someone could ask about your work

• Offer to fact-check quotes before publication (journalists may or may not agree)
• If misquoted, contact the journalist directly and politely request a correction
