When to Use
Use this skill when:
- User asks to plan a road trip or multi-day driving route
- User wants to find stops, attractions, or overnight stays along a driving route
- User needs a driving itinerary with mileage and time estimates per leg
- User asks how to break a long drive into manageable daily segments
- User wants to plan a scenic drive or highway route with points of interest
Do NOT use when:
- User wants a city-based sightseeing itinerary without driving (use

Process
Gather road trip parameters. Ask the user for:
- Starting point (city or address)
- Final destination (city or address, or "loop back to start")
- Total available days for the trip
- Maximum comfortable daily driving time (default: 5-6 hours if not specified)
- Vehicle type (car, SUV, RV, motorcycle) and approximate fuel efficiency
- Number of travelers and any child or pet considerations
- Interest priorities (scenery, national parks, small towns, food, history, beaches, outdoor activities)
- Must-see stops or waypoints (any non-negotiable locations)
- Accommodation preference (hotels, motels, campgrounds, vacation rentals)
- Budget level (budget, moderate, premium)
Calculate the route baseline. Determine:
- Total driving distance from origin to destination (direct route)
- Total estimated driving time without stops
- Available driving days (total days minus arrival day buffer and departure day buffer)
- Target daily driving distance (total distance divided by available driving days)
- Identify the primary highway or route corridor
Segment into daily legs. For each day:
- Set a starting point and an overnight destination
- Target driving time within the user's comfort maximum
- Place the overnight stop in a town or city with accommodation options and dining
- Avoid ending a driving day in a remote area with limited services
- Balance leg distances so no single day is significantly longer than others
Insert stops and points of interest. For each leg:
- Identify 2-4 points of interest along or near the route (within 15 min detour)
- Add a rest stop every 2-2.5 hours of driving
- Insert a lunch stop approximately midway through the driving day
- Note fuel stops based on vehicle range and station availability
- Mark scenic overlooks, photo opportunities, or short hikes (under 1 hour)
Build the daily schedule. For each day:
- Morning departure time
- Each driving segment with distance, estimated time, and route designation
- Each stop with duration and type (rest, fuel, attraction, meal, photo)
- Arrival time at overnight location
- Evening activity suggestion at overnight location
Add logistics and preparation notes. Include:
- Total trip mileage and estimated fuel cost
- Recommended vehicle preparation (tire check, oil, spare tire, emergency kit)
- Season-specific driving considerations (winter chains, summer heat, storm season)
- Emergency contact information approach (roadside assistance, nearest hospitals along route)
- Any road toll estimates or pass requirements
Review the completed plan. Verify:
- No driving day exceeds the user's stated maximum hours
- Overnight stops have accommodation and dining within the budget level
- Must-see waypoints are included and have adequate visit time
- Rest stops are spaced every 2-2.5 hours
- Total trip fits within the available days

Rules
- NEVER include external URLs, specific hotel chain names, or gas station brand names -- use generic location descriptions
- ALWAYS include at least one rest stop every 2-2.5 hours of driving
- ALWAYS include a lunch stop on every driving day
- No single driving day may exceed the user's stated maximum driving time (default 6 hours if unstated)
- Overnight stops must be in locations with at least accommodation and dining options
- Include estimated driving time and distance for every segment
- Points of interest must be within a 15-minute detour of the main route unless the user has specifically requested them
- Include a vehicle preparation checklist with season-specific items
- NEVER output vague suggestions like "consider stopping somewhere interesting" -- every stop must be a specific type with a location description and duration
- Fuel stop spacing must account for vehicle range -- never plan a segment longer than 75% of estimated fuel range without a fuel stop
Edge Cases
Loop trip (return to starting point): Design a circular route. Avoid retracing the same highway on the return. Use a different route for each direction (e.g., coastal route out, inland route back). Balance the loop so driving days are roughly equal.
Road trip with young children (under 5): Reduce maximum daily driving to 4 hours. Add one extra stop per leg for stretch breaks. Prioritize overnight stops with family-friendly amenities (pool, parks). Schedule driving during nap times when possible.
RV or oversized vehicle: Note road restrictions (low bridges, narrow roads, weight limits). Ensure overnight stops have RV-compatible parking or campgrounds. Add 15-20% to driving time estimates for reduced speed. Flag fuel stops with diesel or RV-friendly access.
Winter driving conditions: Add a winter gear section (chains, ice scraper, warm blankets, sand or cat litter for traction). Increase driving time estimates by 20-30%. Recommend checking road condition reports before each driving day. Flag mountain passes with closure risk.
Very long distance (over 2,000 miles): Suggest splitting into segments of 300-400 miles per day. Include one rest day (no driving) every 3-4 driving days. Identify "marathon day" options for stretches with limited services, with advance planning for fuel and food.
Electric vehicle: Replace fuel stops with charging stops. Note estimated charging time (30-60 min at fast chargers). Reduce maximum segment length to 60-70% of battery range for safety margin. Identify charging stations by type (Level 2, DC fast charge) without naming specific networks.
