IMPORTANT: Grades vary wildly between areas and gyms.
Gym grades are typically 1-3 grades softer than outdoor.
A "gym 5.11" climber is often a "crag 5.9-5.10a" climber.
Focus on skill development, not grade chasing.
Movement Fundamentals
The Four Principles
PRINCIPLE 1: FEET FIRST
- Look at footholds before hand holds
- 70% of climbing movement should come from legs
- Place feet precisely on the best part of the hold
- Trust your feet (rubber friction is remarkable)
- Quiet feet = good technique (no scraping or slipping)
PRINCIPLE 2: STRAIGHT ARMS
- Hang from straight arms whenever possible
- Bent arms fatigue biceps rapidly (the "pump")
- Straight arms transfer weight to skeleton, not muscles
- Rest positions: straight arms, weight on feet, shake out hands
PRINCIPLE 3: HIPS TO WALL
- Keep your center of gravity close to the wall
- Hips close to wall = more weight on feet = less arm strain
- Turn sideways (flagging) to reach further with less effort
- Drop a knee to bring hips in on steep terrain
PRINCIPLE 4: MOVE WITH INTENTION
- Read the route before climbing (visualize the sequence)
- Move decisively - hesitation wastes energy
- Breathe (people hold their breath when stressed)
- Rest before you need to, not after you are pumped
Essential Techniques
FOOTWORK:
- Edging: Using the inside edge of shoe on small footholds
- Smearing: Pressing rubber flat against featureless rock (friction)
- Heel hook: Hooking heel on hold, pulling with hamstring
- Toe hook: Hooking toe behind/under a feature for tension
- Backstep: Turning sideways, using outside edge of shoe
- Drop knee: Rotating hips, knee drops down (power + reach)
HANDHOLDS:
- Open hand: Fingers extended over hold (best for endurance)
- Half crimp: Fingers at 90 degrees, thumb optional (power/safety balance)
- Full crimp: Fingers at 90 degrees with thumb locked (max power, injury risk)
- Pinch: Squeezing hold between thumb and fingers
- Sloper: Palm and friction dependent (engage shoulders, keep hips in)
- Pocket: One or more fingers in a hole (careful - high finger strain)
BODY POSITIONS:
- Flagging: Extending one leg out for balance (reduces barn-dooring)
- Stemming: Pushing outward on two facing surfaces
- Mantling: Pressing down to get body over a ledge
- Lock-off: Holding one arm in position while reaching with the other
Gear Essentials
STARTING GEAR (Bouldering):
- Climbing shoes (snug but not painful, beginner: flat-lasted)
- Chalk bag and chalk (or liquid chalk for gyms)
- Crash pad (outdoor bouldering)

- Harness (try on several, comfort matters most)

SHOE SELECTION:

No dead space. New shoes stretch 0.5-1 size. Synthetic less than leather.
Safety Systems
Belaying
BELAY FUNDAMENTALS (never skip this):
1. Learn from a certified instructor (not YouTube alone)
2. Practice until belaying is automatic, not conscious
3. ALWAYS: brake hand stays on the rope below the device
4. NEVER: let go of the brake strand for any reason
PBUS METHOD (Pay-Brake-Under-Slide):
1. PAY out or take in slack
2. BRAKE hand pulls rope down to brake position
3. UNDER hand slides under brake hand
4. SLIDE brake hand back up to device
Repeat. This keeps a hand on brake strand at all times.
COMMUNICATION COMMANDS:
Climber: "On belay?" Belayer: "Belay on."
Climber: "Climbing." Belayer: "Climb on."
Climber: "Slack!" Belayer gives slack
Climber: "Up rope!" Belayer takes in slack
Climber: "Take!" Belayer takes in and locks off
Climber: "Falling!" Belayer braces for soft catch
Climber: "Off belay." Belayer: "Belay off."
Anchor Fundamentals
ANCHOR CRITERIA (EARNEST):
E - Equalized: load shared between points
A - Angles: keep below 60 degrees between legs
R - Redundant: at minimum 2 independent points
N - No Extension: if one point fails, minimal shock load
E - Efficient: simple to build, quick to assess
S - Strong: each point must hold expected loads
T - Timely: built quickly, appropriate for the situation
CLIPPING QUICKDRAWS (Sport Leading):
- Clip with rope running from wall-side through draw to climber-side
- Clip at waist to chest height (not overhead)
- Practice clipping on the ground until automatic
- Learn to clip with both hands
Training Plan
Beginner (Months 1-6)
WEEKLY SCHEDULE:
- Climb 2-3 days per week (with rest days between)
- Focus: technique over strength
- Every session: 15 min warm-up, climb, 10 min stretch
SESSION STRUCTURE:
Warm-up (15 min):
- 5 min light cardio, joint circles
- 3-4 easy routes well below your limit
Technique Block (30-45 min):
- Climb routes focusing on ONE technique per session
- Week 1-2: Feet (quiet, precise placement)
- Week 3-4: Straight arms (rest positions)
- Week 5-6: Flagging and hip positioning
- Repeat cycle with increasing difficulty
Volume Block (20-30 min):
- Many routes at moderate difficulty
- Focus on movement flow and efficiency
Cool-down (10 min):
- Stretching (forearms, shoulders, hips, fingers)
- Antagonist exercises: push-ups, shoulder press
Intermediate (Months 6-18)
ADD TO YOUR TRAINING:
- Hangboard: Dead hangs on large edges to start
7 sec on, 3 sec off, 6 reps, 3 sets
Increase difficulty with smaller edges, not added weight
NEVER full-crimp on a hangboard (injury risk)
- Core: Hollow body holds, hanging leg raises, plank variations
- Antagonist training: Push-ups, shoulder press, reverse wrist curls
- Mental skills: Practice falling on lead in controlled settings

Bouldering vs Lead Climbing
BOULDERING:
- Short problems (4-8 moves), high intensity
- No rope, crash pads for protection
- Emphasizes power, problem-solving, technique
- Lower time commitment, social atmosphere
- Risk: ground falls (ankle injuries most common)
LEAD CLIMBING (Sport):
- Full routes, sustained effort, 15-30m
- Rope protection, clip quickdraws as you climb
- Emphasizes endurance, route reading, mental game
- Requires a competent belayer
- Risk: longer falls, requires solid safety skills
PROGRESSION PATH:
Gym bouldering -> Gym top-rope -> Gym lead -> Outdoor top-rope -> Outdoor lead
Each transition requires new skills. Do not skip steps.
Climbing Ethics and Etiquette
OUTDOOR ETHICS:
- Leave no trace: pack out ALL trash including tape and chalk
- Respect access: follow local rules, park legally, be quiet
- Yield: whoever is on the route has right of way
- Do not alter rock: no chipping, gluing, or manufacturing holds
- Minimize chalk: brush holds after use on boulders
- Wildlife: respect nesting season closures
GYM ETIQUETTE:
- Do not walk under climbers
- Take turns on popular routes
- Keep beta (advice) to yourself unless asked
- Be encouraging - climbing culture is generally welcoming
Injury Prevention
COMMON INJURIES:
- Finger pulley strains/tears (A2 pulley most common)
- Shoulder impingement
- Elbow tendinitis
- Skin flappers and abrasions
PREVENTION:
1. Warm up thoroughly every session (not optional)
2. Avoid full crimping (half crimp or open hand instead)
3. Do antagonist exercises (push muscles balance pull muscles)
4. Rest between climbing days (tendons adapt slower than muscles)
5. Listen to pain - sharp finger pain means STOP immediately
6. Gradual volume increase (no more than 10-15% per week)
7. Stretch forearms, shoulders, and hips after every session
