When to Use

Use this skill when:

• The user asks to write a scene for a novel, novella, or any long-form prose fiction -- regardless of genre (literary, thriller, romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction)
• The user needs a specific narrative sequence that integrates setting, physical action, dialogue, and a POV character's interiority into dramatized, real-time prose
• The user wants to draft a chapter opening, inciting incident scene, midpoint turn, climactic confrontation, or any key emotional beat
• The user has an outline, premise, or beat sheet and needs that structural intention turned into living prose
• The user wants to rewrite, expand, or rebuild a scene that is not working -- flat pacing, missing tension, unclear character motivation, or thin setting
• The user wants a specific scene type: meet-cute, confrontation, revelation, grief scene, training montage rendered as prose, negotiation, seduction, farewell, or any other archetypal scene format
• The user is workshopping a scene and needs craft-level feedback followed by a revision or demonstration draft

Process

Step 1: Extract and Clarify Scene Parameters

Before drafting a single sentence, gather the core parameters. If the user has not provided them, ask targeted questions -- not a questionnaire dump, but the two or three most critical missing pieces.

• Narrative function: What must this scene accomplish? Identify at least two goals from this taxonomy: reveal new information, escalate conflict, shift a relationship, establish setting and stakes, force a decision, deliver a consequence, change the POV character's understanding of their situation. A scene that does only one of these is at risk of feeling thin.
• POV character and interiority: Who is inside the scene? What do they want in this scene (scene-level desire, not the story's overarching goal)? What do they fear? What are they wrong about? The answers to "wrong about" generate dramatic irony.
• Setting specifics: Not "a coffee shop" but "a 24-hour diner on a Tuesday at 2 a.m., fluorescent lights, one other customer, the smell of burnt syrup." Concrete setting creates a world that characters can interact with.
• Emotional arc of the POV character: Identify the emotional state at scene entry and the emotional state at scene exit. These must differ. If the character enters relieved and exits relieved, the scene has no arc. Common arc patterns: certainty to doubt, loneliness to connection, connection to loss, fear to resolve, resolve to fear, contempt to respect.
• Characters present and their competing agendas: Every character in a scene wants something. When agendas conflict or are concealed, scene tension generates itself. If everyone wants the same thing, there is no scene -- there is only narration.
• The essential image or beat: What is the single moment -- gesture, line, object, silence -- that the reader will carry out of this scene? Identify this before drafting. The scene should be built to land on that moment.
• Tense and person: Confirm past or present tense, first or third person, limited or omniscient. If the user's project has an established style, match it exactly.
• Length target: Literary scenes in commercial fiction average 1,500--3,000 words. Literary fiction scenes can run 3,000--6,000 words. Action scenes and transition scenes can be as short as 500--800 words. Confirm what length fits the project.

Step 2: Determine Scene Architecture Before Drafting

Design the scene's internal structure before writing. This prevents the most common failure mode -- prose that wanders because the writer did not know where the scene was going.

• Entry point (the late start principle): Identify the earliest possible moment of tension or change in the scene, then start there. If the scene is about a confrontation at a dinner party, do not start with the character driving to the party or arriving at the door. Start at the table, mid-conversation, already unsettled. Cut every sentence that happens "before" the tension begins.
• Scene question: Every scene must open -- implicitly or explicitly -- a question the reader wants answered before the scene closes. "Will she tell him?" "Is this man dangerous?" "Can Marcus prove what he suspects?" This question creates forward momentum. Name it before you draft.
• Beat map: A beat is a unit of dramatic action -- a moment where something shifts, even slightly. Map 3--5 beats for a standard scene. Each beat should change the power dynamic, reveal new information, shift the emotional temperature, or force a reaction. A beat is not the same as a paragraph; a beat can span multiple paragraphs or collapse into a single line of dialogue.
• Scene climax placement: In a standard scene of 2,000 words, the climax (the moment of highest tension, revelation, or decision) lands at approximately the 75--80% mark, not at the end. The final 20--25% is the aftermath -- compressed, resonant, and building into the next scene's opening tension.
• Exit point (the early stop principle): The scene ends the moment after the climax lands. Do not resolve, explain, or summarize. The reader needs to feel the change before the prose stops. If the climax is a betrayal, end within a few sentences of it -- do not show the character driving home and processing. That processing is the opening of the next scene.
• Subtext architecture: Identify what is NOT being said in this scene. Great scenes operate on two tracks simultaneously -- the surface action and the subtext. Characters rarely say exactly what they mean. The surface: Diane and Marcus discuss a cold case. The subtext: Marcus has discovered Diane is corrupt and is deciding, in real time, whether to confront her. When you name the subtext before drafting, every line of dialogue can carry both tracks.

Step 3: Draft the Opening (First 200--300 Words)

The opening of a scene establishes POV, grounding, and tension before the reader consciously notices. It does not set up -- it begins.

• Start in motion or at the edge of motion: The POV character should be doing something, just finishing something, or just beginning something. Physical activity grounds the reader in a body before ideas or dialogue begin. "Marcus had not been inside the precinct in three years, but the elevator still smelled like burnt coffee and floor polish" -- the character is in motion (riding an elevator), and the sensory detail carries history without stating it.
• Embed setting in action and perception: Do not write a description paragraph. Write a character moving through, interacting with, or reacting to a space. The reader builds the setting from the character's relationship to it, not from an inventory of furniture.
• Establish the POV character's dominant emotional frequency in the first paragraph: Not by labeling it ("he was nervous") but by what they notice, how they move, what they think. A frightened character notices exits. An angry character registers small injustices. A grieving character sees objects that remind them of loss.
• Place the scene question in the first 200 words: Either state it obliquely through dialogue or action, or create the conditions where the reader generates the question themselves. "Why is he here? What does she know?" The reader should be forward-leaning from the first page.

Step 4: Draft the Body -- Managing the Four Core Elements

Every paragraph in a scene does work through one or more of four narrative modes: action, dialogue, interiority, and sensation. Track which mode each paragraph uses. If three consecutive paragraphs use the same mode, the scene is drifting toward imbalance.

• Action: What characters physically do. Action is the spine of the scene. It carries cause and effect in real time. Specific physical action reveals character: what a person does under pressure, what they do when they think no one is watching, what they reach for. Vague action ("he walked around the room") reveals nothing. Specific action ("he moved to the window -- not to look out, she thought, but to have something behind him") reveals character, subtext, and power dynamics simultaneously.
• Dialogue: Dialogue in a scene is not conversation -- it is competition. Every line of dialogue is a move in a chess game between characters with conflicting agendas. Real conversation fills silence, agrees readily, and completes thoughts. Scene dialogue does the opposite -- it deflects, withholds, redirects, and means two things at once. The rule: characters in dialogue should almost never say exactly what they mean. Subtext lives in what is deflected, denied, or avoided. Dialogue tags should be "said" and "asked" 90% of the time; adverbs on dialogue tags signal prose that does not trust itself. Use action beats instead: "She closed her laptop. 'That was closed.'"
• Interiority: The POV character's thoughts, associations, memories, and real-time interpretations. Interiority is the unique capability of prose fiction that film cannot replicate. Use it to create dramatic irony (the reader understands what the POV character does not), to slow time at critical moments, and to show how the POV character's interpretation of events is shaped by their history and biases. Control the depth of interiority: surface interiority ("He noticed her hands were shaking") versus deep interiority ("He had seen that particular stillness before, the way a body holds itself when the mind is deciding something it does not want to admit it is deciding") radically changes the scene's intimacy.
• Sensation: What the POV character perceives through their senses -- but only the senses that are active and relevant. Do not list all five senses in every scene. One or two sharply specific sensory details outperform a thorough sensory inventory. Sensation grounds the reader in a physical body and a physical world. It also carries emotional freight without naming emotion: a character who notices the smell of cigarette smoke on a stranger's jacket may be triggered into a memory they do not name. The reader builds the emotion from the sensation.

A healthy scene paragraph rhythm rotates through these modes rather than stacking them. Action, dialogue, interiority, sensation -- varied, weighted to the scene's needs, never staying in one mode for more than three or four consecutive paragraphs without a shift.

Step 5: Write the Scene Climax and Exit

The climax is the single most important beat in the scene. Draft it with precision.

• A scene climax is a moment of irreversibility: Something changes that cannot be unchanged. A secret is revealed. A decision is made. A relationship crosses a threshold. A realization lands. After the climax, the scene's characters cannot return to their pre-climax positions.
• Compress time at the climax: Use short sentences, sentence fragments, and action beats. Let the dialogue strip down to its minimum. "I think your minute is up" is a scene climax line: short, direct, and impossible to misread. The compression signals to the reader that the scene's velocity has peaked.
• Do not explain the climax: The prose after the climax should land and stop. A character's realization does not need to be narrated at length -- one image, one action, one internal recognition is enough. Trust the reader.
• Exit within 100--150 words of the climax: After the climax, write only what the POV character takes away from the scene and what thread is left unresolved. Do not summarize what happened. Do not have the character reflect extensively. Move. Stop. The reader will carry the weight forward.

Step 6: Apply the Scene Audit Checklist

After drafting, run every scene through these specific checks before delivering it.

• The removal test: If this scene were cut entirely, would the story's plot still function and would the reader miss any essential character information? If yes to both questions, the scene is earning its place. If no, identify what it is not doing and add it.
• The late-entry test: Read the first paragraph. Then the second. Could the scene begin at the third paragraph without losing anything essential? If yes, cut the first two. This test often removes 100--200 words of scene-setting that the prose does not need.
• The simultaneous-work test: Take any paragraph at random. Name what it is doing. Is it doing only one thing? A paragraph that only describes setting, only delivers exposition, or only advances plot without any character dimension is a weak paragraph. Identify what second function it could serve and revise.
• The subtext audit: Read the dialogue in isolation, stripping away all action beats and narration. Is it interesting on its own -- compressed, layered, and full of what is not said? Or does it sound like information delivery? If the dialogue alone is dull, the subtext is missing.
• The interiority check: Count the moments where the POV character's inner life appears. If the scene has more than 1,500 words and the POV character has not had a significant internal moment -- a realization, a memory surface, a gut-level response -- the scene is likely thin in emotional depth. Add interiority at a moment when the external action pauses, even briefly.
• The emotion-label scan: Search for constructions like "she felt," "he was," "she became," followed by an emotion word. Each one is a candidate for replacement with behavior, sensation, or thought. "She felt afraid" is a label. "She found herself counting exit signs" is fear rendered through behavior.
• The pacing read: Read the scene aloud. Where do you rush? Where do you slow involuntarily? Your instinct as a reader identifies pacing problems more reliably than analysis. Tension sequences should be fast; you should not feel the urge to linger. Introspective passages should feel immersive; you should not feel impatience to move on. Where pacing fails, control paragraph length: break long paragraphs into short ones to accelerate, combine short paragraphs into longer waves to slow.

Step 7: Revise Based on Feedback

Revision is surgical. Identify the specific failure before rewriting.

• Flat pacing usually means paragraphs are too uniform in length. Introduce variation -- a single-sentence paragraph after a long one hits like a punch.
• Thin setting usually means the characters are not interacting with their environment. Give the POV character an object to handle, a space to move through, a physical detail that changes meaning during the scene.
• Weak dialogue usually means characters are saying what they mean. Rewrite each line asking: "What does this character NOT want to say? What are they trying to get without asking directly?"
• Missing tension usually means the scene lacks a clear scene question, or the scene question was answered too early. Reintroduce or delay the answer.
• Emotional flatness usually means missing interiority at the scene's critical moments. Locate the two or three beats where the reader most needs to be inside the POV character's mind, and expand those moments.

Rules

1. Never open on pure setting. The first sentence must contain a character in motion, perception, or action. A paragraph of location description before a character appears is an establishing shot -- it belongs in film, not in prose fiction, where the reader experiences everything through a specific consciousness.

2. Never summarize events that belong in scene. If a plot-critical event occurs between scenes, ask whether it should be dramatized directly. Events that change character relationships, deliver revelations, or force decisions almost always deserve a scene. If a user says "and then they had a huge fight," that fight is probably a scene, not a summary.

3. Never label emotion -- show it through behavior, sensation, thought, or dialogue subtext. The words "felt," "was," and "seemed" followed by an emotion adjective are almost always weak constructions. Replace them with what the body does, what the mind notices, or what the character chooses. This is not a stylistic preference -- it is how literary empathy works. The reader feels what the character feels only when the prose shows the feeling from inside, not names it from outside.

4. Never let a scene end at the same emotional and informational position where it began. Every scene must move. If the POV character's understanding of their situation is identical at the scene's exit to what it was at the entry, the scene has not justified its existence. The change can be small -- a crack in a certainty, a shift in a relationship's power balance -- but it must be present.

5. Always start as late as possible and stop as early as possible. The scene begins at the moment of tension, not the approach to it. The scene ends the moment after the climax's impact lands, not after the character has processed and integrated the event. Scene time is not real time. Cut every sentence that serves as a warm-up and every sentence that serves as a cool-down.

6. Every scene must serve at least two narrative functions simultaneously. Identify both before drafting. Acceptable function pairings: advance plot + reveal character flaw; escalate conflict + shift relationship dynamic; deliver exposition + force a decision; establish atmosphere + raise stakes; show a character's strength + introduce the threat that will undo it. A scene that does only one thing is a luxury the story cannot afford.

7. Control POV discipline. In third-person limited, the narration accesses only what the POV character can perceive, know, or reasonably infer. Omniscient intrusions -- telling the reader what a non-POV character is thinking or feeling as fact, rather than as the POV character's interpretation -- break the contract of limited narration. If the user's project is third-person limited, flag any moment where the draft would need to access another character's interiority, and render it as the POV character's inference instead.

8. Dialogue tags should be invisible. Use "said" and "asked" as defaults. Avoid "ejaculated," "opined," "retorted," "queried," and other tag verbs that call attention to themselves. Use action beats instead of adverbs on tags: not "she said, nervously" but "She set down the glass before she answered." Action beats simultaneously deliver blocking (where characters are in space), subtext (what they are doing while they speak), and character (what they reach for under pressure).

9. Setting must be interactive, not decorative. Characters should handle objects, bump into furniture, feel temperature, hear ambient sound, navigate space. Setting that exists only as backdrop produces thin prose. Setting that exists as a system of obstacles, affordances, and emotional resonances produces scenes where the physical world comments on the human drama. A locked window in a tense scene is not just architecture -- it is a contained world.

10. Pacing is controlled by sentence length and paragraph length, not by the amount of action. A slow chase scene written in long, digressive paragraphs will feel slow. A quiet conversation written in short, sharp paragraphs will feel urgent. Match your sentence and paragraph architecture to the emotional tempo you want the reader to experience, not to the tempo of the events being described. This is one of the most powerful and least discussed tools in prose fiction.

11. Every character in a scene must want something specific to that scene. Not their overarching story goal -- their scene-level desire. When scene-level desires conflict, tension generates itself. When every character wants the same thing, or when minor characters exist only to serve the POV character's needs, the scene flattens. Even a waiter who appears for one paragraph can want to end his shift, be annoyed by this particular table, or be distracted by a personal crisis -- and that want, barely sketched, makes the scene feel inhabited.

12. Subtext must be named before drafting, not discovered by accident. The difference between a scene that feels layered and one that feels thin is almost always the presence or absence of subtext. Name the gap: what is the surface conversation about, and what is the scene actually about? When you know this before you draft, every line of dialogue can operate on both levels. When you discover subtext only during drafting, it is inconsistent and often collapses into surface by the scene's end.

Edge Cases

The Pure Action Scene (Chase, Fight, Battle)

Action scenes fail most often because the writer loses track of the POV character's body and consciousness in the rush to describe external events. The fix: anchor every beat of the action in what the POV character sees, feels, and decides -- not in an omniscient overhead view of the action. Keep sentences short (8--15 words) for kinetic moments. Use sentence fragments to create the feeling of incomplete, fractured perception under stress. Eliminate adverbs entirely -- they slow velocity. The POV character should make micro-decisions throughout: which way to run, whether to fight or flee, what they notice in the chaos. Decisions under physical pressure reveal character faster than any other technique. Maintain spatial clarity -- the reader must always know where the POV character is in relation to the threat, or the action loses stakes. If the spatial geometry is confusing even to you, draw it before writing it.

The Quiet or Introspective Scene

When external action is minimal -- a character alone with a memory, two people sitting in sustained silence, a character processing grief -- the risk is a scene that is emotionally dense but dramatically inert. The solution: anchor the interiority in a physical situation that is itself under pressure, even subtly. The character sorting through a dead person's belongings is not just remembering -- they are making decisions (keep, discard, return) that force real movement through emotional material. The physical action (touching objects, reading letters, deciding) gives the scene bones that the interiority then fills. Without the physical anchor, introspective scenes become prose essays. With it, they become dramatized interior events. Use sensory specificity to control emotional temperature: a particular smell triggers a particular memory; a texture grounds an abstraction; a sound interrupts a reverie and forces the character back into the present.

The Revelation Scene

A scene whose primary function is to deliver a major revelation -- a secret exposed, a truth confronted, a mystery solved -- has a specific structural problem: the revelation itself is the climax, but the scene's real dramatic content is the character's response to the revelation, not the revelation itself. Draft the revelation scene so that 30--40% of the scene's length occurs after the revelation lands. Use that space not for the character to process abstractly but for them to act, speak, or react in a way that shows what the revelation costs them. A character who learns their partner has betrayed them and immediately confronts that partner is in a different scene than one who learns the same thing and says nothing -- both are valid, both generate different forward momentum, but both require substantial post-revelation material to land the scene's emotional punch.

The Scene Drawn From an Outline Beat

When a user provides a beat sheet or chapter outline and asks for a specific scene to be written, the outline tells you what happens -- not how to make it compelling. Extract three things from the beat: (1) what changes, (2) whose change it is, and (3) what it costs. Then apply the scene architecture from Step 2. Outline beats often describe events ("Marcus confronts Diane about the cold case") without specifying the scene question, subtext, emotional arc, or key image. These must be invented. The scene you write should make the outline beat feel inevitable in retrospect and surprising in the moment -- both at once. If the outline is very thin, ask one clarifying question before drafting: "What does the character walk away from this scene believing that they did not believe before?"

The Scene with an Ensemble (Three or More Characters)

Scenes with three or more characters have a specific failure mode: characters become indistinguishable, or secondary characters become scenery. Fix this by assigning each character a distinct scene-level desire and a distinct speech pattern or behavioral signature before drafting. In dialogue scenes with three speakers, the non-speaking character's behavior is often the most interesting beat -- what do they do with their hands while the other two argue? When do they look away? What do they reach for? Use action beats to keep non-speaking characters present and differentiated. Avoid the "tennis match" -- dialogue that bounces between two speakers while a third disappears. Every character should have at least one moment where their behavior changes the course of the scene, even if they say nothing.

The Scene That Crosses a Genre Boundary

When a scene must carry both the conventions of genre (horror atmosphere, thriller pacing, romance tension) and the demands of literary character work, prioritize the character work and use genre conventions as the delivery mechanism. Horror atmosphere makes character vulnerability visceral. Thriller pacing makes a character's decision feel urgent. Romance tension makes subtext visible through physical proximity and restraint. Genre conventions are tools for amplifying emotion, not substitutes for it. A scene that achieves genre effect without character interiority will satisfy genre fans but no one else. A scene that achieves character interiority with genre technique will satisfy both. When in doubt: genre first in structure, character first in content.

Rewriting an Existing Scene That Is Not Working

When a user provides a draft scene for rewrite, read it twice before touching it: once for what it accomplishes (content, character, information), once for what it fails to accomplish (pacing, subtext, emotional depth, structural problem). Preserve every accomplishment. Rewrite only what fails. The most common problems and their diagnoses: (1) The scene starts too early -- cut the opening until the tension appears. (2) The dialogue is on-the-nose -- rewrite each line asking what the character would avoid saying. (3) The interiority is missing or labeling emotion -- add behavioral and sensory equivalents. (4) The scene's climax is buried or absent -- identify what should be the irreversible moment and rebuild the scene to land on it. (5) The scene has no scene question -- add one in the first 200 words. Do not start from scratch unless the scene's fundamental architecture (its POV, its structure, its central conflict) is wrong. Wholesale rewrites waste what the original draft got right.

The Opening Scene of a Work

The first scene of a novel or story carries obligations that mid-story scenes do not. It must establish narrative voice clearly enough that the reader trusts it. It must introduce the protagonist in a way that generates immediate sympathy or fascination -- not necessarily likability. It must create a scene question compelling enough to make the reader continue. And it must do all of this without front-loading backstory, world-building exposition, or character biography. The technique: place the protagonist in motion, under mild-to-moderate pressure, in a specific world, doing something that reveals who they are. The backstory, the world, the history -- all of it emerges in fragments through perception and action, never through summary. An opening scene that begins "She had lived in this city for thirty years and never loved it" is summary. An opening scene that begins with a character navigating a specific, charged moment in that city -- one that reveals, without stating, the thirty years of accumulated not-loving -- is dramatization. The entire novel's trust relationship with the reader begins in the opening scene's first paragraph.

Example

Input: "Write a scene for a literary thriller. POV: Marcus, a retired detective, is visiting his former partner Diane at her office. He is there to ask about a cold case but realizes mid-conversation that Diane may be involved. Third-person limited, past tense. Around 1,500--2,000 words."

Marcus had not been inside the precinct in three years, but the elevator still smelled like burnt coffee and floor polish. Eighth floor. The doors opened and the bullpen noise hit him -- keyboards, phones, someone laughing too loud for a room where people spent their days discussing how other people died.

He had forgotten how ordinary it looked. He had spent twenty-two years forgetting that it looked ordinary.

Diane's office was at the end of the hall. Glass walls, blinds half-drawn. Corner suite. He had heard she made deputy chief eighteen months ago, and now he could see what that looked like: twenty feet of view, a door that closed all the way, a name on a plate instead of a tag on a cubicle wall. He knocked once and opened it before she answered. The way he used to.

"On three specific pieces of evidence. Over a six-month period. The same three."

Diane looked at him the way she used to look at people who were saying something true that she did not want said. He had sat across from her a thousand times in rooms like this. He had watched her do this to other people. He had never felt it aimed at him, and for a moment -- a short, specific moment -- he wanted to rewind the sentence back into his mouth and not let it out.

"Clerical error," she said. "Happens all the time in long investigations. You'd know that if you were still active."

"I requested the signature sheets last week. From records."

"They let you do that?"

"Old colleagues. They didn't ask why."

She stood. Moved to the window. Downtown was going amber in the late light, the kind of light that made buildings look like they were made of something warmer than concrete. He watched her posture as she walked -- straight, deliberate, slower than she needed to be. She was composing something. Not her face. She had already composed her face. She was composing what came next.

"I'm going to say something as your friend," she said, "not as your former colleague." She kept her back to him. "Not as someone with any official position at all."

"Go ahead."

Not because the investigation was mishandled. Because the alternative -- what solving the case would require -- costs more than the solution is worth."

Marcus looked at the leather chair under his palms. Smooth. He thought about the office renovation and what it must have run. He thought about a deputy chief's salary. He thought about three specific signatures on three specific evidence logs over six specific months.

"Costs who?" he said.

She turned from the window. Her face was even, professional, and slightly, carefully sad -- the expression she had used on victims' families for two decades, the expression she knew worked. "This institution. The people in it. You. If you keep pulling on this, what do you think happens? You're retired. You have no authority. You have no standing. If something comes back at you, I can't help you."

"I didn't ask for help."

"I know you didn't." She walked back toward the desk but stopped before she reached it -- halfway across the office, in the open space between the furniture. "That's why I'm offering it."

He looked at her. He had known Diane Cowell for twenty-six years. He had been in the room when her father died, and she had been in the room when his marriage ended, and they had spent enough late shifts together that he could read her the way he could read weather -- by pressure and temperature rather than direct evidence. Her face was right. Her voice was right. The offer was pitched correctly, at exactly the frequency of a real warning from a real friend who did not want to see him hurt.

Her hand, resting on the edge of the credenza, was pressed flat against the surface.

It was the thing she did when something a suspect said was true. He had watched her do it for twenty-six years. He had pointed it out to her once, years ago, as a tell -- and she had laughed and said she'd never noticed, and he had believed her. He believed her now when he read it. The hand pressed flat because the body could not help what it knew.

"The family hasn't been notified about the custody gaps," he said.

"Let it go, Marcus." She said it quietly, without the sadness now. "I think your minute's up."

He stood. He straightened his jacket. He looked at the glass wall of the office and the bullpen beyond it -- the phones and keyboards and the ordinary machinery of a place that was supposed to be in the business of truth -- and he thought about three signatures, and a flat hand on a credenza, and a woman who used to have mismatched chairs.

"Good to see you, Diane."

She didn't answer.

He walked back to the elevator. The coffee smell was still there. He pressed the button for the lobby and watched the numbers descend and thought, with a clarity he hadn't expected and did not want, that he had just done the most dangerous thing a retired detective could do: he had shown a person with something to hide exactly how much he knew.
