Industry Standard Format

Screenplays follow a strict format. Deviating signals amateur status to readers.

Page layout:

• Courier 12pt font (or Courier Prime)

Common Format Mistakes

• Writing camera directions (CLOSE ON, PAN TO) - that's the director's job
• Using "we see" or "we hear" - just describe what happens

Act I - Setup (pages 1-25)

• Page 1-10: Establish the protagonist's ordinary world, their want, their flaw
• The Opening Image (page 1): A visual that encapsulates the protagonist's world before change
• The Inciting Incident (page 10-12): The event that disrupts everything
• Page 12-25: The protagonist reacts, resists, and debates
• End of Act I / Plot Point 1 (page 25): The protagonist commits to the journey. No going back.

Act II - Confrontation (pages 25-85)

• Page 25-55: Rising action. Fun and games. The protagonist pursues their goal with increasing difficulty.
• The Midpoint (page 55): A major revelation, reversal, or raising of stakes. False victory or false defeat.
• Page 55-75: The antagonist closes in. Allies may betray. The plan falls apart.
• All Is Lost (page 75): The lowest moment. A whiff of death - literal or metaphorical.
• Dark Night of the Soul (page 75-85): The protagonist processes their defeat and finds a new insight.
• End of Act II / Plot Point 2 (page 85): Armed with new understanding, the protagonist commits to the final battle.

Act III - Resolution (pages 85-110)

• The Finale (pages 85-105): The protagonist applies their arc to defeat the antagonist
• The Climax: The single most dramatic moment - external and internal conflicts converge
• The Resolution (pages 105-110): The new normal. The final image mirrors and contrasts the opening image.

Detailed Beat Sheet for Screenplays

Beyond the basic three-act structure, many screenwriters use a more granular beat sheet to plan their stories. Character Introduction

How to Introduce a Character on the Page

The first time a character appears, their name is in ALL CAPS with a brief, vivid description:

Weak: "JOHN (40) enters the room." Strong: "JOHN REEVES (40, built like a man who used to be in shape, tie loosened, wedding ring tan line) drops into the chair like it owes him money."

Character Introduction Principles

1. Show character through action. What they DO in their first scene tells us who they are.
2. One telling detail beats a paragraph of description. "Wedding ring tan line" says more than "recently divorced."
3. Introduce in a characteristic moment. Show them at their most "them."
4. Avoid introducing more than 2-3 named characters per scene. Readers get confused.
5. Save the Cat moment: Early in the script, have the protagonist do something that makes the audience root for them - help someone, show vulnerability, display competence.

Protagonist Essentials

Every protagonist needs:

• A clear external goal (what they want)
• A clear internal need (what they need to learn/change)
• A flaw that gets in their way
• Stakes - what they lose if they fail
• Agency - they make choices that drive the plot, not just react

Dialogue

Screen Dialogue vs. Real Speech

Screen dialogue is heightened reality. It sounds natural but is actually:

• More concise (no filler, no pleasantries unless they serve character)
• More purposeful (every line advances plot or reveals character)
• More distinctive (each character should sound different)
• Loaded with subtext (what they mean vs. what they say)

Subtext in Dialogue

The best screen dialogue operates on two levels: what's being said and what's really being communicated.

On-the-nose (bad):

          SARAH
    I'm angry at you for lying to me
    about the affair.

With subtext (good):

          SARAH
    How was the conference?

          DAVID
    Productive.

          SARAH
    I bet.
              (beat)
    The hotel called. You left your
    other tie.

The surface conversation is about a business trip. The real conversation is about betrayal. The audience understands both layers.

Dialogue Quick Tests

• The "said" test: Cover the character names. Can you tell who's speaking from the dialogue alone?
• The read-aloud test: Say the dialogue out loud. Does it sound like something a human would actually say?
• The purpose test: What does this line accomplish? If the answer is "nothing," cut it.
• The on-the-nose test: Is the character saying exactly what they feel? If so, rewrite with subtext.

Scene Transitions and Pacing

Scene Transitions

• CUT TO: Standard transition. Used sparingly in modern scripts (it's assumed between scenes).
• SMASH CUT: Abrupt, jarring transition for comedic or dramatic effect.
• MATCH CUT: Visual or conceptual connection between the last image of one scene and the first of the next (the bone to the satellite in 2001).
• DISSOLVE TO: Indicates time passage. Feels dreamy or reflective.
• INTERCUT: Switching between two simultaneous scenes (phone calls, parallel action).

Pacing Principles

• Short scenes create pace. Action sequences use 1/4 to 1/2 page scenes.
• Long scenes create depth. Key dramatic scenes can run 3-5 pages.
• Vary scene length to create rhythm. Several short scenes followed by a longer one creates a satisfying pattern.
• Enter scenes late, leave early. Start in the middle of the action, end before the conversation is fully resolved.
• Every scene needs conflict. Even quiet scenes should have tension - disagreement, unspoken desire, ticking clock.

The Cold Open

Starting a screenplay (especially a TV pilot) with a compelling scene before the title card:

• Establish tone immediately
• Create a question the audience needs answered
• Show the show's "engine" in miniature
• Hook the reader/viewer in the first 2-3 pages

TV Pilot Structure

The Pilot's Job

A pilot must accomplish more than a typical episode:

1. Introduce the world and its rules
2. Introduce the main characters and their dynamics
3. Establish the show's central engine (what generates stories week after week)
4. Tell a complete, satisfying story (the pilot episode plot)
5. Create a reason to tune in next week (the series question)

Half-Hour Comedy Pilot (~30 pages)

Cold Open (1-2 pages): Establish tone, introduce protagonist Act 1 (7-10 pages): Setup the pilot's A-story. Introduce ensemble. Act 2 (10-12 pages): Complications. B-story develops. Relationships deepen. Act 3 (5-7 pages): Resolution of pilot story. The status quo of the series is established. Tag (1 page): A final joke or moment that reinforces the show's tone.

One-Hour Drama Pilot (~55-65 pages)

Teaser / Cold Open (3-5 pages): Hook the audience. Often the inciting incident. Act 1 (12-15 pages): Setup. World. Characters. The pilot's central problem. Act 2 (12-15 pages): Complications. New characters. Subplots emerge. Act 3 (12-15 pages): Stakes rise. The protagonist is forced to act. Act 4 (8-12 pages): Climax and resolution. But not full resolution - this is a series. End on a question: The pilot resolves its immediate story but opens the larger series question.

Logline Writing

The Logline Formula

A logline is one or two sentences that capture the essential concept of your screenplay.

Template: "When [inciting incident], a [specific protagonist description] must [goal/action] before [stakes/deadline], or [consequence]."

Elements of a strong logline:

• An active protagonist with a defining characteristic
• Inciting incident that starts the story
• A clear goal or mission
• Stakes - what happens if they fail
• A sense of the tone/genre
• Irony or a compelling hook - what makes this concept stand out

Logline Examples

• Jaws: "When a great white shark begins attacking beachgoers in a small island town, the hydrophobic police chief must team up with a marine biologist and a grizzled shark hunter to kill the beast before it claims more lives - and ruins the tourist season."
• Get Out: "A young Black man visits his white girlfriend's family for the weekend, only to discover their liberal facade hides a horrifying secret."
• Legally Blonde: "When her boyfriend dumps her for not being 'serious' enough, a fashion-obsessed sorority president enrolls at Harvard Law School to win him back - and discovers she's smarter than anyone expected."

Logline Testing

Ask yourself:

• Would I watch this movie based on this logline alone?
• Is the protagonist's goal clear?
• Can I feel the genre?
• Is there irony, contrast, or a hook?
• Could this only be THIS movie, or is it too generic?

Treatment Format

A treatment is a prose document that tells the story of your screenplay in narrative form, present tense. Typically 5-15 pages for a feature, 3-8 pages for a TV pilot.

Treatment Structure

1. Title and logline at the top
2. Opening - set the scene, introduce the protagonist
3. Story told in present tense, organized by act
4. Key scenes described in vivid detail
5. Dialogue may be included sparingly for key moments
6. Emotional arc should be clear throughout
7. Ending - don't hide the ending in a treatment; it's a selling document

Treatment Tone

Write it like a compelling short story. Make it a page-turner. If the treatment is boring, the script will be boring.

Rewriting

The Rewrite Passes

Pass 1 - Structure: Does every scene earn its place? Does the pacing work? Are the act breaks landing?

Pass 2 - Character: Is every character's voice distinct? Are arcs complete? Is the protagonist active?

Pass 3 - Dialogue: Cut on-the-nose dialogue. Sharpen subtext. Make every line do work.

Pass 4 - Action Lines: Cut adjectives and adverbs. Tighten to essential visual information. Keep paragraphs to 3 lines maximum.

Pass 5 - Page Count: Feature scripts should be 95-120 pages (ideally 100-110). If you're over, cut scenes and tighten action lines. If you're under, you may be missing story.

The "What Does the Character Want in This Scene?" Test

For every scene, the protagonist should want something specific. If they don't, the scene lacks drive. Even in an expository scene, give the character a goal within the conversation.

Response Guidelines

When coaching a screenwriter:

• Ask to see their logline or concept before giving structural advice
• Give feedback in terms of audience experience: "At this point, the audience would feel..."
• Reference produced films as examples - screenwriters learn by watching
• Be honest about what's working and what needs work
• Prioritize structure notes over dialogue notes in early drafts
• Encourage them to read professional scripts (IMSDB, Script Slug, studio FYC sites)
• Remind them: the first draft is about getting the story down; the rewrite is where it gets good
