Fabric Selection Tips
BEGINNER-FRIENDLY FABRICS:
1. Quilting cotton (doesn't stretch, easy to handle)
2. Flannel (slightly fuzzy, stays in place)
3. Chambray (light denim feel, well-behaved)
4. Medium-weight linen (forgiving, beautiful drape)
AVOID AS A BEGINNER:
- Silk and satin (slippery, every mistake shows)
- Chiffon and sheers (hard to handle, seams visible)
- Stretchy knits without a walking foot or serger
- Very thick materials like upholstery fabric
- Velvet (shifts, shows marks)
FABRIC MATH:
Most fabric comes in 44-45" or 54-60" widths
Pattern envelope lists yardage needed for each size
Add 10-15% extra for matching prints, mistakes, or shrinkage
"With nap" yardage = all pieces cut in same direction (velvet, corduroy)
Pattern Reading
Understanding a Sewing Pattern
PATTERN ENVELOPE:
Front: Photo/illustration of finished garment
Back:
- Line drawings of all included views/variations
- Size chart (compare YOUR measurements to pattern, not RTW sizes)
- Fabric suggestions
- Yardage requirements by size and view
- Notions needed (zipper, buttons, elastic, etc.)
PATTERN PIECES:
Grain line arrow: Must align with fabric selvage (parallel)
"Place on fold": Pattern edge goes on fabric fold (creates symmetric piece)
Notches: Alignment marks (match single to single, double to double)
Dots/circles: Match points for construction
Darts: Triangular markings for shaping (bust, waist, back)
Cutting line: Outer solid line (cut here)
Stitching line: Inner dashed line (sew here)
Seam allowance: Space between cutting and stitching line
Commercial patterns: Usually 5/8" (15mm)
Indie patterns: Often 3/8" or 1/2" (check instructions)
TAKING MEASUREMENTS:
Bust: Around fullest part of chest, over bra
Waist: Natural waist, narrowest point (bend to the side, crease is your waist)
Hips: Around fullest part of hips/seat (usually 7-9" below waist)
Back waist length: Nape of neck to natural waist
Compare to pattern size chart, NOT to ready-to-wear sizes
Choose size based on largest measurement, then adjust others
Pattern Adjustments
COMMON ADJUSTMENTS:
Full bust adjustment (FBA): Add width at bust for larger cup sizes
Small bust adjustment (SBA): Remove width for smaller cup sizes
Lengthen/shorten: Cut and spread or overlap at adjustment lines
Wide/narrow shoulders: Adjust at shoulder seam
Grading between sizes: Use one size at bust, blend to another at hips
EASE:
Wearing ease: Extra room for comfortable movement (built into patterns)
Design ease: Extra room for the style (oversized, fitted, etc.)
Negative ease: Pattern is smaller than body (stretchy fabrics only)
Basic Stitches
Machine Stitches
STRAIGHT STITCH:
Most-used stitch for woven fabrics
Length: 2.5mm (standard), 3.0-4.0mm (basting/gathering)
Backstitch at start and end to secure
ZIGZAG STITCH:
Use: Stretch seams, raw edge finishing, applique
Width: Narrow for seam finishing, wide for applique
Length: 1.0-2.0mm depending on application
BASTING STITCH:
Longest straight stitch (4.0-5.0mm)
No backstitching (temporary, meant to be removed)
Use: Testing fit, gathering, holding pieces for permanent sewing
BUTTONHOLE:
Most machines have a buttonhole foot and automatic function
Always test on scrap fabric first
Use interfacing behind buttonhole area for stability
OVERLOCK/OVERCASTING STITCH:
Built-in stitch that mimics serger
Use: Finishing raw edges on woven fabrics
Not a substitute for a true serger on knits
Hand Stitches
SLIP STITCH (LADDER STITCH):
Use: Invisible closing of openings, hems, linings
Technique: Alternate tiny stitches between folded edges
BACKSTITCH:

Garment Construction
Construction Order (Standard Garment)
GENERAL SEQUENCE:
1. Prepare pattern pieces and cut fabric
2. Transfer all markings to fabric
3. Sew darts (if any)
4. Sew all structural seams (shoulder seams, side seams)
5. Insert sleeves (set-in) or attach bodice to skirt
6. Sew secondary seams (inseam for pants, sleeve seams)
7. Apply facings or neckline finish
8. Install closures (zipper, buttons)
9. Hem garment
10. Final pressing
PRESSING RULES:
Press every seam BEFORE crossing it with another seam
Press seams open for flat construction
Press seams to one side for strength (toward darker fabric)
Press darts toward center front/back (bust darts downward)
Use a pressing cloth on delicate or synthetic fabrics

Common Alterations
HEMMING PANTS:
1. Try on pants with intended shoes
2. Pin desired length (fold fabric under)
3. Mark all around with chalk at pin level
4. Remove, measure hem allowance (1-1.5")
5. Cut excess, leaving hem allowance
6. Finish raw edge (serge or zigzag)
7. Fold up and press
8. Stitch: Blind hem by hand (invisible) or machine blind hem
TAKING IN A WAIST:
1. Turn garment inside out, try on
2. Pin excess evenly at side seams and center back
3. Mark new seam line with chalk
4. Remove original stitching in the area
5. Sew new seam following marked line
6. Try on, adjust if needed
7. Trim excess seam allowance
8. Press seams
SHORTENING SLEEVES:
1. Try on, determine desired length
2. Mark at desired length
3. Open existing hem
4. Re-mark cutting line with seam allowance
5. Cut, finish raw edge
6. Fold new hem, press, stitch
For cuffed sleeves: Remove cuff, shorten sleeve, reattach cuff
TAKING IN SIDES (SHIRTS/DRESSES):
1. Turn inside out, try on
2. Pin along side seam for desired fit
3. Mark new seamline (taper from armhole to hem)
4. Sew new seam line
5. Try on before cutting excess
6. Trim and finish seam
Hemming Methods
TURNED HEM:
Fold raw edge under 1/4", press
Fold again 1/2"-1.5", press
Topstitch close to inner fold
Best for: Casual garments, home textiles
BLIND HEM (HAND):
Fold and press desired hem width
Fold hem back, leaving 1/4" of finished edge visible
Take tiny stitch through outer fabric (1-2 threads only)
Take larger stitch through hem fold
Repeat, keeping stitches loose
Best for: Dress pants, skirts, formal wear
BLIND HEM (MACHINE):
Use blind hem presser foot
Fold as for hand blind hem
Machine catches outer fabric with left swing of stitch
Best for: Faster blind hems, less visible than regular topstitch
ROLLED HEM:
Use rolled hem presser foot
Creates narrow, clean hem (1/8"-1/4")

Zipper Installation
Zipper Types and Methods
CENTERED ZIPPER:

5. Pin or tape in place

INVISIBLE ZIPPER:

1. Open zipper, press coils flat with iron (carefully)
2. Pin right side of zipper to right side of fabric
3. Using invisible zipper foot, stitch close to coils
4. Repeat for other side
5. Close zipper, stitch remainder of seam below zipper

LAPPED ZIPPER:
Application: Side seams where one side overlaps
One side sits flush, other side covers zipper teeth
Used in skirts and pants
EXPOSED ZIPPER:

SEPARATING ZIPPER:
