Getting Started with Facebook
Creating a Facebook Account
If you do not have a Facebook account yet, here is how to set one up:
On your phone or tablet:
- Download the Facebook app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android)
- Look for the blue icon with a white "f"
- Open the app and tap "Create New Account"
- Enter your first name and last name (use your real name so family can find you)
- Enter your date of birth (this is required but you can hide it from others later)

- Enter your phone number or email address
- Create a password (at least 8 characters, write it down and keep it safe)
- Tap "Sign Up"

Setting Up Your Profile

Adding a profile picture:

Adding basic information:
- Go to your profile (tap your name or profile picture)
- Tap "Edit Profile"
- You can add:
- Where you live (city only, not your full address)
- Where you are from

- Tap "Save" after each section
What NOT to put on your profile:
- Your full home address
- Your phone number (unless you want it public)
- Your birth year (optional; some people prefer to keep their age private)
- Any financial information
Finding and Adding Family and Friends
To find someone on Facebook:
- Tap the search bar at the top of the screen (magnifying glass icon)
- Type the person's name
- Look through the results for the right person (check their profile picture and location)
- Tap "Add Friend" next to their name
- They will receive a notification and can accept your friend request
When someone sends YOU a friend request:
- You will see a notification (the bell icon, or a red number on the person icon)
- Tap to see who sent the request
- If you know the person, tap "Confirm"
- If you do not know them, tap "Delete" (there is no need to accept requests from strangers)
Tip: Only accept friend requests from people you actually know. Scammers sometimes create fake accounts using stolen photos. If you are unsure, send the person a message asking how you know each other before accepting.
Using Facebook Day to Day
The News Feed (Your Home Screen)
When you open Facebook, you see the News Feed. This is a scrolling list of posts from your friends, family, and any groups or pages you follow.
What you will see:
- Posts: Messages, photos, or videos shared by your friends
- Shared articles: News stories or interesting links your friends shared
- Group posts: Updates from groups you have joined
- Ads: Paid advertisements (marked with "Sponsored"). These are not from your friends.
To scroll through: Swipe up on your phone, or use the scroll wheel on your computer mouse.
Reacting to Posts (Liking and Commenting)
To "Like" a post:
- Tap the thumbs-up icon (or the word "Like") below the post
- To choose a different reaction (Love, Laugh, Wow, Sad, Angry), press and hold the Like button. A row of reaction icons will appear. Tap the one you want.
To comment on a post:
- Tap "Comment" below the post
- Type your message in the text box
- Tap the send arrow (or press Enter on a computer)
Commenting tips:
- Keep comments friendly and positive
- A simple "Beautiful!" or "Looks like you had a wonderful time!" is always welcome
- If you want to respond to a specific person's comment, tap "Reply" under their comment
Sharing Posts
If you see something you think a friend or family member would enjoy:
- Tap the "Share" button below the post
- Choose "Share Now" to share it on your own page for all your friends to see
- Or choose "Send in Messenger" to send it privately to one person
Creating Your Own Posts
To share a text update:
- At the top of your News Feed, tap "What's on your mind?"
- Type your message
- Tap "Post"
To share a photo:
- Tap "What's on your mind?"
- Tap the Photo/Video button (camera icon or green icon)
- Select one or more photos from your phone
- Add a caption or description if you like
- Tap "Post"
Post ideas:
- Share a photo from your garden, a walk, or a meal you made
- Wish someone happy birthday (Facebook will remind you)

Privacy Settings: Controlling Who Sees What
This is one of the most important sections. Taking a few minutes to set your privacy settings gives you control over your information.
Setting Your Default Audience
This controls who can see your future posts:
- Open Facebook
- Tap the three lines (menu) in the bottom-right corner (iPhone) or top-right (Android)
- Scroll down and tap "Settings & Privacy"
- Tap "Settings"
- Tap "Privacy" (under "Audience and Visibility")
- Tap "Who can see your future posts?"
- Choose "Friends" (recommended)
- "Public" means anyone on the internet can see your posts
- "Friends" means only people you have accepted as friends can see them
- "Only Me" means only you can see them
Other Important Privacy Settings
While you are in the Privacy settings, also check these:

- When creating a post, look for the audience selector below your name (it might say "Friends" or have a globe icon)
- Tap it to change who can see just this post:
- Friends: All your Facebook friends
- Specific friends: Choose specific people
- Only me: Only visible to you (useful for saving something privately)
Reviewing What Others Can See
To see what your profile looks like to other people:
- Go to your profile
- Tap the three dots (...) near the top
- Tap "View As"
- You will see your profile as a stranger would see it
- This helps you check that private information is not accidentally visible
Connecting with Family
Facebook Messenger (Private Messages)
Messenger is Facebook's private messaging system. It is like texting, but through Facebook.
To send a private message:
- Tap the Messenger icon (speech bubble with a lightning bolt) on Facebook, or open the separate Messenger app

Creating a family group is a wonderful way to stay in touch. Everyone in the group sees every post, like a family bulletin board.
To create a family group:
- Tap the three lines (menu)
- Tap "Groups"
- Tap "Create" (or the "+" button)
- Name the group (for example: "The Johnson Family")
- Set privacy to "Private" (only members can see posts)
- Tap "Create"
- Tap "Invite Members" and search for family members by name
- Tap "Invite" next to each person
What to share in a family group:
- Daily life updates and photos
- Family event planning (holidays, reunions, birthdays)
- Old family photos (take pictures of printed photos to share them digitally)
- Questions and check-ins ("How is everyone doing this week?")
- Recipes, jokes, and interesting articles
Birthday Reminders
Facebook will notify you when it is a friend's birthday. To wish them well:
- You will see a notification saying "It's [Name]'s birthday today"
- Tap it to go to their profile
- Write a birthday message on their page
- A simple "Happy birthday! Hope you have a wonderful day!" is perfect
Joining Groups Based on Your Interests

To find and join a group:

Sharing Content Safely
Before You Post, Ask Yourself
- Would I say this in person? If not, do not post it.
- Am I sharing someone else's personal information? Ask their permission first.
- Does this reveal where I am right now? Avoid posting your exact location in real time. Share trip photos after you return home.
- Could this be embarrassing to me or someone else? Once posted, it is hard to fully take back.
- Is this actually true? Before sharing news articles, check if the source is reliable. If the headline sounds unbelievable, it might be false or misleading.
Recognizing Misinformation
Not everything you see on Facebook is true. Here is how to spot unreliable information:
Warning signs:
- The story makes you very angry or very scared (emotional manipulation is a common tactic)
- You have never heard of the news source
- The headline uses ALL CAPS or lots of exclamation marks!!!
- The story has no author name or date
- No other reliable news sources are reporting the same story
- It asks you to "SHARE before it gets taken down!"
Before sharing a news story:
- Check if major news outlets are also reporting it
- Look at the source's name. Is it a real news organization?
- Read past the headline. Does the story actually support the headline?
- Check the date. Is this recent, or is old news being recirculated?
- When in doubt, do not share it
Managing Notifications
Facebook sends a lot of notifications, which can feel overwhelming. Here is how to control them.
Reducing Notification Overload
- Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings
- Tap "Notifications"
- You will see categories you can adjust:
- Comments and reactions: Notifications when someone interacts with your posts
- Tags: When someone tags you in a photo or post
- Friends: Friend requests and suggestions
- Groups: Activity in groups you have joined
- Birthdays: Friend birthday reminders
- For each category, you can choose:
- On: Get notifications
- Off: Do not get notifications
- Consider turning OFF notifications for groups (you can check groups when you choose to) and turning ON notifications for comments and tags
Muting Specific People or Groups
If someone posts too frequently and it fills your News Feed:
- Find one of their posts
- Tap the three dots (...) in the top-right corner of the post
- Choose "Snooze [Name] for 30 days" (temporarily hide their posts)
- Or choose "Unfollow [Name]" (permanently hide their posts without unfriending them)

Instagram (Photo Sharing)
- Owned by the same company as Facebook
- Focused on photos and short videos
- Good if you enjoy photography
- You can link it to your Facebook account
YouTube (Videos)

- Use the search bar to find videos on topics you enjoy

WhatsApp (Messaging)

- Supports text, photos, voice messages, and video calls
- End-to-end encrypted (very private)
NextDoor (Local Community)
- Connects you with people in your neighborhood
- Good for local recommendations, events, and safety alerts
- Requires your real address (it is verified to keep out outsiders)
Troubleshooting
"I skipped my Facebook password"
- On the login screen, tap "skipped Password?"
- Enter your email address or phone number
- Facebook will send you a reset code
- Enter the code and create a new password
- Write the new password down in a safe place
"Someone created a fake account using my name"
- Go to the fake profile
- Tap the three dots (...) on their profile
- Tap "Report" > "Pretending to Be Someone" > "Me"
- Facebook will review and remove the account
"I am seeing too many ads"
- You cannot remove all ads, but you can reduce ones that feel irrelevant
- On any ad, tap the three dots (...) and choose "Hide ad"
- Facebook will show you fewer ads like that one
"I accidentally posted something I did not mean to"
- Find the post on your profile
- Tap the three dots (...) in the top-right corner of the post
- Tap "Delete post"
- Confirm by tapping "Delete"
- The post is removed (though anyone who already saw it cannot un-see it)
