Common Structures

What Each Section Does

Verse: Sets the scene, tells the story, provides new information each time. Melody is typically more conversational and lower in energy.

Pre-Chorus: Builds tension and anticipation for the chorus. Harmonically moves toward the chorus key center. Melodically rises. Creates the feeling of "here it comes."

Chorus: The emotional and melodic peak. Contains the song's central message or hook. Should be singable after one listen. Repeats with the same (or very similar) lyrics each time.

Bridge: Provides contrast in every dimension - new melody, new chords, new perspective. Often the emotional climax or revelation. Appears only once, typically after the second chorus.

Hook: The most memorable element of the song. Can be a lyric phrase, a melodic motif, or a production element. It is what the listener hums after the song ends.

Melody Writing

Melodic Principles

Range: Most singable melodies stay within an octave and a half. The wider the range, the fewer people can sing along.

Contour: Melodies that rise toward important words and fall toward resolution are intuitively satisfying. Map the emotional arc of your lyric to the melodic contour.

Repetition with variation: Repeat your melodic phrases, but alter them slightly each time. This creates familiarity without boredom.

Rhythm variety: A melody that follows the same rhythm for every line is monotonous. Alternate between shorter, punchy phrases and longer, flowing ones.

Melody Writing Techniques

Sing before you play: Put down your instrument. Hum or sing melodic ideas without harmonic constraint. Your voice will find natural, singable melodies that your instrument's patterns might not suggest.

The constraint method: Limit yourself to 5 notes and write a melody. Constraints breed creativity. Many iconic melodies use very few notes ("Mary Had a Little Lamb" uses three).

Record everything: Keep a voice memo recorder accessible. Melodic ideas arrive at inconvenient times. Capture them in 10 seconds now rather than trying to remember later.

Prosody check: Sing your lyric with the melody. Do the important words land on strong beats and high notes? Does the rhythm of the melody match the natural speech rhythm of the words? Prosody is the alignment of lyric and melody, and misalignment feels wrong even to listeners who cannot articulate why.

The Lyric Hierarchy

1. Title/hook line: The most important element. If this is weak, nothing else can save the song.
2. First line: Must earn the listener's attention in seconds
3. Chorus lyrics: Must be universal enough for anyone to sing, specific enough to feel true
4. Verse lyrics: Earn the right for the chorus to hit hard
5. Bridge lyrics: The shift in perspective, the deeper truth

Rhyme Strategies

Perfect rhyme (love/above, fire/desire): Strong, satisfying, can sound cliche if obvious

Near rhyme/slant rhyme (love/enough, time/mine): More conversational, modern, less predictable

Internal rhyme (rhyme within a line, not just at the end): Adds musicality without the sing-song feeling

Rhyme scheme options:

• AABB: Coupled rhymes, strong forward momentum
• ABAB: Alternating rhyme, classic and balanced
• ABCB: Only the 2nd and 4th lines rhyme, more conversational
• XAXA: First and third lines do not rhyme, less formal

The rhyme test: If a rhyme forces an unnatural word choice, cut the rhyme. Meaning always beats rhyme.

Object writing (10 minutes daily): Pick a random object. Write about it using all five senses for exactly 10 minutes. Do not edit, just write. This trains your brain to generate sensory, specific language on demand.

Title collection: Keep a running list of potential song titles. Overheard phrases, interesting word combinations, emotional truths. When you sit down to write, pick one from the list.

Rewrite a favorite: Take a song you love and rewrite the lyrics from a different perspective or about a different situation, keeping the same structure and syllable count. This teaches structure through imitation.

• Accountability: harder to procrastinate with a partner in the room
• Skills complement: lyricist + melodicist, or two different emotional viewpoints

Co-Writing Session Structure

Co-Writing Etiquette

• Come prepared with 3-5 ideas (even if they are rough)
• Say "yes, and" more than "no"
• If you do not like an idea, suggest an alternative rather than just rejecting
• Be willing to kill your darlings if the song is better for it
• Agree on splits upfront (default is equal, regardless of who wrote what)
• Record the full session for reference
• Follow up: send a rough recording within 24 hours while it is fresh

A demo must communicate the song's potential. It does not need to be a finished production.

Minimum viable demo:

• Clear vocal (in tune, confident delivery)
• Simple accompaniment (guitar or piano)
• Correct tempo and feel
• Good enough audio quality that the listener focuses on the song, not the recording

1. Practice the song until you can play and sing it without stopping
2. Record the instrument part first (guitar or piano) to a click track
3. Record the vocal over the instrument track
4. Add a simple bass line if it helps communicate the feel
5. Keep it to 2-3 tracks total for a writing demo
6. Mix: vocal on top, instrument supporting, nothing else competing
