Effective reading rate is the metric that matters. 500 WPM at 40% comprehension (200 effective) is worse than 300 WPM at 80% comprehension (240 effective).

The Five Speed Killers

1. Subvocalization

What it is: Silently pronouncing every word in your head as you read. Why it slows you down: Limits reading speed to speaking speed (~150-200 WPM). Fix: You do not need to eliminate subvocalization entirely (it aids comprehension for complex material). Instead, reduce it for easy material by:

• Counting "1-2-3-4" silently while reading (occupies the inner voice)
• Humming while reading (disrupts the vocalization pathway)
• Focusing on meaning rather than individual words
• Practice reading in word groups rather than individual words

2. Regression

What it is: Re-reading words or lines you have already read. Why it slows you down: Average readers regress 15-20% of the time, adding ~50 WPM drag. Fix:

• Use a pacer (finger, pen, or cursor) moving steadily forward
• Trust that meaning accumulates; minor missed words rarely matter
• If comprehension drops, the issue is focus, not reading speed

3. Small Fixation Span

What it is: Eyes focusing on one word at a time instead of groups of 3-5 words. Why it slows you down: Each fixation (eye stop) takes 200-250 milliseconds. Fix:

• Start by reading 2 words per fixation, progress to 3-4

4. Slow Saccades
