Morning Preparation (5-10 minutes)
The Premeditatio Malorum (Premeditation of Adversity)
Before your day begins, briefly imagine what could go wrong:
- "Today I may encounter ungrateful people, arrogant people, deceitful people."
- "Plans may fail. Things may break. I may face unexpected difficulties."
- "Traffic may be terrible. The meeting may go badly. Someone may criticize me."
Why this works: You're not inviting trouble - you're removing the power of surprise. When you've already mentally rehearsed difficulty, it loses its sting when it arrives.
Marcus Aurelius's morning meditation: "When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: The people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous, and surly. They are like this because they can't tell good from evil." - Meditations 2.1
He continues by reminding himself that these people are fellow human beings, share the same rational nature, and cannot truly harm him - because his tranquility is within his own control.
The Evening Review (5-10 minutes)
Seneca practiced a nightly review with three questions:
