7. What is your comfort level with storytelling? (Natural storyteller? Nervous? Data-oriented and uncomfortable with narrative?)

The Narrative Engine

Our framework provides a universal storytelling system that adapts to any context and length. It works for a 30-second elevator pitch, a 5-minute conference talk, or a full-length article. The engine has three components: Structure (the architecture of your story), Mechanics (the techniques that make it compelling), and Delivery (how you present it).

Component 1: Structure

The Universal Story Architecture

All effective stories, regardless of length, share this deep structure:

1. CHARACTER   - Someone the audience can relate to or root for
2. SITUATION   - A context the audience understands
3. DISRUPTION  - Something changes; a problem, challenge, or opportunity
4. STRUGGLE    - The character faces obstacles; stakes become clear
5. RESOLUTION  - The problem is addressed (successfully or with learning)
6. INSIGHT     - What this means; the takeaway; the "so what"

Story Length Scaling

The 30-Second Story (Elevator Pitch):

The 2-Minute Story (Meeting, networking, interview):

The 5-Minute Story (Presentation, pitch, speech):

OPENING (30 sec):    Start with the disruption or a striking moment

CONTEXT (60 sec):    Back up and set the scene; introduce the character
STRUGGLE (90 sec):   Walk through the challenges; build tension; show stakes
TURNING POINT (30 sec): The critical moment where things change
RESOLUTION (60 sec): What happened; the outcome; specific results
INSIGHT (30 sec):    The meaning; the lesson; the call to action

Component 2: Mechanics

The Seven Story Mechanics

1. SPECIFICITY over generality

WEAK:    "A customer was struggling with their business."
STRONG:  "Maria, a bakery owner in Portland, was losing $2,000 a month
          because her inventory system was a spreadsheet on her phone."

Specific details create vivid mental images. Vague statements create nothing.

2. STAKES - Make the audience care

Every story needs clear stakes - what will be gained or lost?
- Personal stakes: reputation, livelihood, relationships, identity
- Organizational stakes: revenue, market position, team morale
- Universal stakes: justice, innovation, human dignity, progress

Raise the stakes explicitly: "If we did not solve this, the entire project would..."

3. TENSION - Create and sustain uncertainty

Tension is the engine of engagement. The audience should wonder: "What happens next?"

Build tension by:
- Presenting a problem before the solution
- Showing failed attempts before the successful one
- Revealing obstacles the character must overcome
- Using time pressure ("We had 48 hours to...")
- Contrasting expectations with reality

4. EMOTION - Connect through feeling

People remember how a story made them FEEL, not the data in it.

Emotions to leverage:
- Surprise: Subvert expectations; reveal something unexpected
- Empathy: Show vulnerability; let the audience see themselves in the character
- Triumph: The satisfying victory after struggle
- Humor: Breaks tension; builds connection; makes content memorable
- Wonder: Reveal something awe-inspiring; expand possibilities

5. CONTRAST - Before vs After

The power of transformation. Show the gap between:
- Before the solution and after
- What was expected and what actually happened
- The old way and the new way
- The problem world and the possibility world

"They were spending 40 hours a week on manual reporting.
 After implementation, it took 20 minutes."

6. DIALOGUE - Let characters speak

TELLING:  "The client was frustrated."
SHOWING:  "The client said, 'I have tried everything. I am about to give up.'"

Direct quotes, even reconstructed, bring stories to life.
Use dialogue for emotional moments and turning points.

7. THE RULE OF THREE

Three examples. Three obstacles. Three lessons. Three data points.

Two feels incomplete. Four feels like a list. Three feels like a pattern.

"We tried email campaigns. They did not work.
 We tried social media. It was not enough.
 Then we tried community events. Everything changed."

The "What vs Need" Principle (From Pixar)

The most resonant stories feature a gap between what the character WANTS and what they NEED:

WANTS (conscious goal):    The character pursues a tangible objective
NEEDS (unconscious growth): The character must grow or change to truly succeed

Example:
WANTS: The founder wants to raise $5M in funding
NEEDS: The founder needs to learn to trust her team and delegate

The story becomes about the NEED being fulfilled through the journey of pursuing the WANT.

Component 3: Delivery

Opening Techniques

The first 10 seconds determine whether your audience stays engaged:

1. START IN THE MIDDLE: "It was 3 AM and my phone would not stop ringing."
   (Drop the audience into action; context comes later)

2. ASK A QUESTION: "What would you do if your biggest customer called to cancel?"
   (Activates the audience's own thinking)

3. STATE A SURPRISING FACT: "90% of startups fail. But the ones that succeed
   all have one thing in common."
   (Creates curiosity gap)

4. MAKE A BOLD CLAIM: "Everything you know about hiring is wrong."
   (Provocative; demands attention)

5. PAINT A PICTURE: "Imagine walking into your office and finding it completely empty."
   (Engages visual imagination)

DO NOT START WITH: "Today I am going to talk about..." or "Let me introduce myself..."

Closing Techniques

The ending determines what the audience remembers and does:

1. CALLBACK: Return to your opening image or question with new meaning
   "Remember the 3 AM phone call? That was the last time it ever happened."

2. CALL TO ACTION: Tell the audience exactly what to do next
   "So here is what I am asking you to do: pick up the phone and call one customer today."

3. UNIVERSAL TRUTH: End with a larger principle
   "Because in the end, it was never about the technology. It was about trust."

4. EMOTIONAL PUNCTUATION: End on a feeling
   "And for the first time in three years, she went home on time."

5. THE FUTURE: Paint a picture of what is now possible
   "Imagine a world where every small business has access to..."

The Story Refinement Process

DRAFT 1: Write it out using the Story Spine (raw, no editing)

DRAFT 3: Add mechanics (specificity, stakes, tension, emotion, contrast, dialogue)
DRAFT 4: Cut ruthlessly (remove anything that does not serve the story's purpose)
DRAFT 5: Practice delivery out loud (timing, pacing, pauses, voice)

RULES FOR CUTTING:
- If a detail does not serve character, tension, or insight - cut it
- If a sentence can be understood without a word - remove the word
- If a paragraph does not advance the story - delete it
- When in doubt, shorter is better
