Process

Step 1: Gather the User's Shopping Profile

Before producing any recommendations, collect four dimensions of context. If the user has already provided some of these in their message, confirm or fill in the gaps. Do not skip this step -- recommendations change dramatically based on these inputs.

• Product categories: Which areas are they shopping in? Clothing, household cleaning, personal care, kitchen and food storage, small electronics, home goods, outdoor and sporting goods, or general mix?
• Current habits and consumption rate: What do they currently buy and how often? "I go through a paper towel roll every three days" is actionable data. Vague answers ("I buy a lot of cleaning stuff") need gentle clarification.
• Budget posture: Classify as one of three tiers:
  • Tight: monthly discretionary budget is constrained -- only recommend swaps with a payback period under 6 months
  • Moderate: willing to spend more upfront for durability -- payback periods up to 18 months are acceptable
  • Flexible: quality and environmental impact outweigh upfront cost -- payback periods and premium products are both appropriate

• Primary motivation: Rank the user's stated motivations -- cost savings, landfill waste reduction, plastic elimination, carbon reduction, personal health (reduced chemical exposure), or a combination. This determines which trade-offs to highlight and which to minimize.

Step 2: Apply the Four-Factor Decision Framework to Each Category

For every product category the user mentions, evaluate using four structured criteria before making any recommendation:

• Longevity score: Estimate expected lifespan of the sustainable alternative vs. the conventional item. Express as a ratio. A stainless steel water bottle lasting 10 years vs. a plastic disposable bottle lasting one use = 3,650:1 longevity ratio. A cast iron skillet lasting 40+ years vs. a nonstick pan lasting 2-3 years = 15:1 longevity ratio.
• Cost-per-use analysis: Divide the purchase price by expected total uses. This is always the correct comparison unit -- not the purchase price in isolation.
  • Formula: CPU = Price ÷ (uses per time period × expected lifespan in same time period)
  • Example: A $40 safety razor + 50 blades at $10 = $50, lasting 5 years with 2 shaves/week = 520 shaves, CPU = $0.096/shave. A cartridge razor with 10 cartridges/year at $3 each = $30/year × 5 years = $150 total, CPU = $0.29/shave.
• Breakeven point: How many uses or months until the cumulative cost of the sustainable option falls below the cumulative cost of repeated disposable purchases? Breakeven = (Sustainable upfront cost -- Disposable equivalent for same period) ÷ (Disposable monthly cost -- Sustainable monthly running cost). State this in months, not abstract units.
• Practical friction score: Rate the difficulty of the swap from 1-5 (1 = identical experience, 5 = significant behavior change required). A reusable water bottle is friction score 1. Switching from disposable razors to a double-edge safety razor is friction score 2-3. Giving up dryer use for line drying is friction score 3-4. Always be honest about convenience differences -- understating friction causes users to fail on swaps and abandon sustainable habits entirely.

Step 3: Deliver Category-by-Category Guidance with Specific Thresholds

Cover each category the user requested. Use the following domain knowledge as the foundation:

Clothing and Textiles:

• Cost-per-wear is the governing metric: (purchase price) ÷ (number of times worn before discarding or replacing). A $120 jacket worn 200 times = $0.60/wear. A $30 fast fashion jacket worn 15 times = $2.00/wear.
• Quality indicators that predict durability:

• Action hierarchy by impact (always present in this order):
  1. Buy less -- the single highest-impact action. One fewer garment purchased = 100% of manufacturing impact avoided.
  2. Buy secondhand -- zero new manufacturing impact, typically 60-90% cheaper than retail
  3. Buy durable new -- higher upfront cost, lower lifecycle cost and impact
  4. Care correctly -- cold wash (saves ~90% of washing energy vs. hot), air dry (eliminates ~1,200 lb CO2/year per household that switches from dryer), repair instead of discard

Household Cleaning:

• Concentration ratios: true concentrates dilute at 1:30 to 1:100 (1 oz of product per 30-100 oz of water). A 16 oz bottle of concentrate at $12 that dilutes 1:30 yields 480 oz of usable cleaner. Step 4: Build the Personalized Swap List

Based on the user's profile and the category analysis, construct a specific, prioritized list:

• Name each current item with consumption rate (units per month or year)
• Name the sustainable alternative
• State the upfront cost of the switch
• Calculate current annual cost vs. alternative annual running cost
• Calculate breakeven point in months
• Rate practical friction (1-5)
• Estimate annual units diverted from waste stream

Sort the final list by a composite score that weights: financial payback speed × friction inverse × waste impact. For tight-budget users, weight financial payback at 60%. For moderate-budget users, weight waste impact and financial payback equally. For flexible-budget users, weight waste impact and carbon reduction most heavily.

Step 5: Calculate Aggregate Annual Impact

Summarize across all recommended swaps:

• Annual cost impact: Sum of (current annual spend) minus (alternative annual spend + annualized upfront cost). Present as savings per year after the payback period, and as break-even year.
• Annual waste diversion: Sum of units per year for each swap. Convert to approximate weight if possible (using category averages: paper towel roll ~100g, plastic bag ~6g, 1L plastic bottle ~30g, clothing garment ~500g-1.5kg).
• CO2e reduction estimate: Use the following benchmark figures where applicable, noting that these are order-of-magnitude estimates:
  • One plastic bottle avoided: ~82g CO2e
  • One paper towel roll replaced by cloth: ~70g CO2e
  • One garment not purchased (manufacturing avoided): ~5.5-33 lbs CO2e depending on type
  • One case of bottled water replaced by filtered tap: ~850g CO2e

Step 7: Handle Honest Trade-offs and Limitations

This step is non-negotiable. For every swap recommended:

• State if the sustainable option has a meaningful convenience, efficacy, or availability limitation
• State if the upfront cost is a real barrier and quantify it
• State if the environmental benefit is ambiguous (e.g., glass vs. plastic packaging often has a less clear environmental advantage than users expect because glass is heavier and has higher transport emissions)
• Note that "sustainable" branding is not a reliable quality indicator -- a $60 "eco" product with unclear manufacturing standards and no repairability may be less sustainable than a $20 conventional product that lasts three times longer

Rules

1. Never recommend specific brands. Provide measurable selection criteria (fabric weight thresholds, repairability scores, concentration ratios) that allow the user to evaluate any product independently. Brand recommendations introduce bias, become outdated, and are outside the scope of this skill.

2. Cost-per-use is always the correct comparison unit for reusables vs. disposables -- never compare upfront prices in isolation. A user who sees "$40 vs. $5" and stops there will always choose the disposable. Cost-per-use reframes the actual economic reality.

3. Always calculate and state the breakeven point in months -- not vague language like "pays for itself quickly." A user with a tight budget making a decision about a $40 purchase needs to know it pays back in 4 months, not 3 years.

4. Always state the practical friction score honestly. If a swap requires significant behavior change or has a real learning curve (safety razor technique, shampoo bar transition period, care instructions for cast iron), name it explicitly. Understating friction is the single most common reason users fail at sustainable shopping intentions and then feel guilty or give up.

5. Distinguish cleanly between money-saving swaps and money-costing swaps. These two categories require different framing. For tight-budget users, focus exclusively on money-saving swaps. For flexible-budget users, premium eco-products may be appropriate. Never present a premium environmental upgrade as financially beneficial when it is not -- this destroys user trust.

Glass is only clearly preferable when: (a) it enables a refill system that eliminates future packaging entirely, or (b) the item is used frequently over years so the weight-in-transport is amortized. In single-use scenarios, lightweight plastic often has a lower carbon footprint than glass.

8. Never overstate CO2e estimates. Always present carbon figures as order-of-magnitude estimates with low-to-medium confidence. The supply chain and consumer behavior variables in household product carbon accounting are too large to justify false precision. Ranges are always more honest than single numbers.

9. Disinfection efficacy is non-negotiable for health-critical situations. DIY vinegar-based cleaners are not EPA-registered disinfectants. Always flag this explicitly when recommending DIY cleaners for kitchens and bathrooms. Users with young children, immunocompromised household members, or during illness outbreaks should retain EPA-registered disinfectant for appropriate use.

10. Sequence recommendations -- never deliver a full swap list as a simultaneous to-do list. 12. Acknowledge when secondhand buying is the single most impactful action available. For clothing and small appliances especially, buying secondhand eliminates the manufacturing footprint entirely, costs 60-90% less than retail, and extends the product lifecycle. This should appear as the first recommendation in any category where a secondhand market exists, regardless of the user's budget level.

Edge Cases

User on a Very Tight Budget (Under $50/Month Discretionary Spending)

Focus the entire recommendation set on swaps that generate net savings within 3 months. The short list of universally applicable money-saving swaps is: reusable water bottles (saves $10-20/month for a household), cloth towels replacing paper towels (saves $8-15/month), cold-water laundry (saves $3-7/month in energy), reusable grocery bags (saves on bag fees where applicable), DIY all-purpose cleaner (saves $5-10/month), and buying secondhand clothing. Do not recommend any item with an upfront cost above $20 in the first two phases. Never recommend premium sustainable products -- the environmental movement does not require a premium price, and suggesting one to a budget-constrained user is both unhelpful and tone-deaf. User Who Wants to Focus Solely on Plastic Reduction
