When to Use

Use this skill when:

• A user asks to write, improve, or evaluate a thesis statement for an academic paper, essay, or dissertation chapter
• A user has a topic or a vague claim and needs help sharpening it into a defensible, arguable academic argument
• A user wants to know whether their existing thesis is "strong enough" or how to fix a weak one
• A user is writing a course essay, seminar paper, capstone paper, or thesis chapter and needs to anchor the argument before drafting
• A user has written a full draft and realizes the thesis is buried, diffuse, or inconsistent with what the paper actually argues
• A user needs to distinguish between what their paper describes and what it actually claims -- the thesis-topic confusion is one of the most common problems in academic writing
• A user is writing in a specific discipline (history, literary studies, political science, psychology, philosophy, sociology) and needs a thesis that fits that field's argumentative conventions

Do NOT use this skill when:

• The user wants to structure an entire research paper (use research-paper-structure -- the thesis is one component of a full paper architecture)
• The user wants to write an abstract (use abstract-writing -- abstracts summarize completed arguments; thesis development is upstream of that)
• The user is writing a lab report or scientific abstract where the central claim takes the form of a formal hypothesis with operationalized variables (use hypothesis-writing if available)
• The user needs to build a full argumentative essay from scratch (use academic-argument -- thesis development is the starting point, not the whole task)
• The user is writing a personal statement, cover letter, or professional bio (these have implicit central claims but are governed by entirely different conventions)
• The user wants to write a journalistic opinion piece (op-eds have theses, but the conventions for specificity, evidence, and structure differ sharply from academic writing)
• The user is asking about paragraph-level topic sentences (these are mini-theses but are handled at the outlining level -- use essay-outlining or similar)

Process

Step 1: Gather Diagnostic Information About the Assignment

Before generating any thesis, collect enough context to produce something genuinely useful rather than generically correct.

• Paper type and genre: Identify whether the paper is argumentative (takes a position and defends it), analytical (interprets a text, event, data set, or phenomenon), explanatory/expository (explains a causal or procedural relationship), or comparative (evaluates two or more things against explicit criteria). These require structurally different theses.
• Discipline: Ask or infer the academic field. Literary studies, history, political science, psychology, sociology, and philosophy each have different thresholds for what counts as a thesis and what counts as merely a topic. A thesis in history must account for historical causation and context; a thesis in literary studies must name an interpretive claim about a text; a thesis in political science must be falsifiable by empirical or theoretical evidence.
• Paper length and academic level: A 5-page undergraduate essay can support a single, tight two-part claim. A 25-page seminar paper supports a three-part thesis with qualifications and counterargument. A dissertation chapter may support a multi-sentence thesis complex (the "thesis paragraph" common in book-length arguments). Mismatching thesis scope to paper length is one of the most common errors.
• Source constraints: If the user is writing from a closed set of sources (a primary text assignment, a specific data set, a document analysis), the thesis must be supportable from that specific evidence. If the user has broad research freedom, the thesis can be more ambitious.
• Existing draft material: If the user has already written something -- even rough notes or a paragraph -- ask them to share it. The real argument often lives in the conclusion paragraph or in a sentence that starts with "this shows that" or "the key insight here is." Mining a draft for the buried thesis is faster and more accurate than inventing one from scratch.

Step 2: Identify the Thesis Type Required

Matching the thesis type to the paper's intellectual task is not optional -- a thesis written in the wrong mode will either be marked down for not being argumentative enough or will overclaim beyond what the paper can actually deliver.

• Argumentative/Prescriptive thesis: Claims that something should be done, should be changed, should be evaluated as better or worse. Takes a normative position. Example form: "[Subject] should [action] because [reasons], not [alternative approach]." These are most common in policy papers, ethical argument essays, and opinion-based assignments.
• Analytical/Interpretive thesis: Claims that something means, represents, operates, or functions in a specific way that is not self-evident. This is the dominant mode in literary studies, cultural studies, and historical interpretation. Example form: "[Text/event/phenomenon] does [something] in order to [purpose/effect], revealing [larger insight]." The word "reveals" is often the signal that you are in interpretive territory.
• Explanatory/Causal thesis: Claims that a specific mechanism produces a specific outcome, or that a relationship between variables works in a particular direction through a particular pathway. Example form: "[Factor X] causes/produces/leads to [outcome Y] because [mechanism Z], which means [implication]." Common in social science papers, case study analyses, and historical causation essays.
• Comparative/Evaluative thesis: Claims that two or more things differ in significant ways, or that one is superior to another by specified criteria. Example form: "Unlike [A], [B] achieves [goal] more effectively because [reason 1] and [reason 2], suggesting [implication]." The thesis must name the evaluative criteria explicitly -- comparisons without criteria are not arguments.
• Thesis complex (dissertation/book-chapter level): At the dissertation chapter level, the thesis may be a two-to-three-sentence complex in which the first sentence states the claim, the second qualifies or contextualizes it, and the third states the intervention or implication. This is different from a run-on thesis -- each sentence does distinct logical work.

Step 3: Diagnose the User's Starting Material

If the user has a draft thesis or a topic phrase, diagnose it against the five failure modes before proposing alternatives.

• The topic statement: "This paper will discuss X." This describes a subject, not a claim. Diagnosis: no arguable predicate. Fix: ask "What does the paper claim is true about X that is not obvious and could be disputed?"
• The observation masquerading as a thesis: "Social media has become central to how teenagers communicate." This is a fact no reasonable person disputes. Diagnosis: fails the arguability test. Fix: ask "What is the non-obvious, contestable claim about this fact?"
• The announcement: "This paper will argue that..." The announcement grammatical structure is appropriate when the professor requires it or when the paper is so complex that roadmapping is necessary, but the content following it must still pass all five strength tests.
• The overstuffed thesis: A thesis with four or five coordinate claims joined by "and" is typically three papers compressed into one sentence. Diagnosis: scope mismatch. Fix: identify the single most important claim and make the others sub-claims within the paper's argument.
• The underclaimed thesis: A thesis that is technically arguable but so hedged it takes no real position. "Social media may have some effects on teenagers' mental health in certain contexts." Diagnosis: fails the commitment test. Fix: remove the hedges and name the specific effect, mechanism, and context.

Step 4: Apply the Five Strength Tests Systematically

Run every proposed thesis through all five tests before presenting it to the user. Do not present a thesis that fails any test.

• Specificity test: Every key term in the thesis must be specific enough that the paper can define and defend it. "Technology" fails; "recommendation algorithms on short-form video platforms" passes. "Mental health" fails if the paper is actually about depression specifically; "depressive symptom severity as measured by PHQ-9 scores" passes in a scientific paper. In humanities papers, specificity comes from naming the text, author, period, or interpretive concept precisely.
• Arguability test (the "someone could disagree" test): Propose an intelligent, well-informed counterargument. If no reasonable counterargument is possible, the thesis is an observation. If an obvious counterargument exists, the thesis is genuinely arguable. The best theses anticipate the counterargument within their own structure: "Although X appears to suggest Y, this paper argues that Z" is a thesis that acknowledges the debate.
• Scope test (the "pages available" calculation): Roughly, a persuasive sub-argument in an academic paper requires 2-4 pages to establish (claim + evidence + analysis + concession). A thesis with three parts needs at minimum 6-12 pages of body. A thesis with five coordinate claims requires 10-20 pages minimum. If the paper is 5 pages, the thesis must have no more than two to three tightly related parts.
• So-what test (the "scholarly significance" test): The thesis must connect to a larger debate, problem, or question that the scholarly community or an educated audience cares about. A thesis that only shows something interesting about a narrow case without any implication for a larger question is a finding, not an argument. Ask: "If this thesis is correct, what follows? Who should care, and why?"
• Evidence feasibility test: The user must have -- or must be able to obtain -- the evidence needed to support the thesis. A thesis about the psychological effects of a specific social media algorithm requires access to platform data that most researchers cannot obtain. A thesis about how Toni Morrison uses imagery in Beloved requires only a copy of the novel. Adjust the thesis to the actual evidence available.

Step 5: Generate Two to Three Thesis Options With Full Annotations

Never present a single thesis and declare it correct. Offer the user genuine intellectual choices. Each option should:

• Represent a meaningfully different angle on the topic, not just slightly different wording
• Take a different position on the causal mechanism, the evaluative judgment, or the interpretive frame
• Pass all five strength tests
• Be annotated with: its type, its central claim, the main evidence needed to support it, the counterargument it implies, and the paper structure it creates
• Be written as a complete, polished sentence or two-sentence complex that could appear at the end of an introduction paragraph right now

Do not ask the user to choose an "option A, B, or C" -- present the theses as fully realized alternatives with enough annotation that the user can make an informed choice based on what evidence they have and what argument interests them.

Step 6: Refine the Selected Thesis to Final Draft Quality

Once the user selects an option or indicates a preferred direction, perform final-draft refinement.

• Eliminate vague intensifiers: Words like "very," "quite," "somewhat," "many," and "various" weaken thesis precision. Replace with specific terms or remove.
• Activate the verbs: Weak theses use "is" or "has." Strong theses use transitive action verbs: "undermines," "enables," "exposes," "challenges," "transforms," "conflates," "reframes." The verb carries the logical force of the argument.
• Check for implied structure: A thesis with three coordinate claims should create three body sections. If the structure implied by the thesis does not match the paper the user actually intends to write, revise the thesis -- not the paper. The thesis must be a faithful map of the argument.
• Position the thesis correctly: In standard academic writing, the thesis appears at the end of the introductory section -- typically the last sentence of the introduction in a short essay, or the final paragraph of a longer introduction. In some humanities traditions (especially in literary studies), the thesis is withheld until after a section of evidence and arrives as a conclusion-style claim mid-paper. Know the convention for the discipline.
• Consider adding a "however" or "although" structure: A thesis that acknowledges the strongest counterposition before asserting its own claim is demonstrably more sophisticated than one that does not. "Although X, this paper argues Y because Z" signals that the writer has engaged with the debate rather than ignoring it.

Step 7: Deliver the Final Output With the Strength Test Table

Provide the chosen, refined thesis alongside the full output format. Include the strength test results for the final thesis so the user can see explicitly why it works. If any test is borderline rather than a clean pass, note what the paper would need to do to satisfy that test.

Rules

1. Never produce a thesis that is a statement of fact. A fact is a thesis that no reasonable, informed person would dispute. "The Holocaust killed millions of people" is a fact. "The Allies' delayed opening of a second front until 1944 extended the Holocaust's duration by intensifying Nazi administrative capacity for extermination" is a thesis. The test: can a credible counterargument be made? If not, it is not a thesis.

2. Never confuse a topic with a thesis. A topic names what the paper is about. A thesis names what the paper claims is true about that topic. "This paper examines the relationship between income inequality and educational outcomes" is a topic. "Income inequality reduces educational mobility not primarily through resource gaps but through the psychological mechanism of scarcity mindset, which impairs executive function in students from low-income households" is a thesis about that topic.

3. Never present a single thesis without alternatives. The user's topic can always be argued from multiple legitimate angles. Presenting only one thesis forecloses the user's intellectual agency and may not match the evidence they actually have. Always provide at least two substantively different options.

4. Match thesis complexity to paper length using the 2-4 pages per sub-claim rule. A thesis with three coordinate claims requires at minimum 6 pages of body text. A 5-page paper can support at most two tightly related claims. Violating this rule produces papers that feel underdeveloped or rushed -- the most common structural failure in undergraduate academic writing.

5. Never use "is" or "has" as the main verb of a thesis if a transitive action verb is available. "Social media is harmful to teenagers" uses the weakest possible predicate. "Social media platforms amplify social comparison behaviors in adolescent girls by algorithmically prioritizing appearance-based content, generating measurable increases in depressive symptom severity" uses a causal action verb and names a mechanism. The verb of a thesis carries the argumentative force; it must be precise and active.

6. Always annotate evidence requirements explicitly. A thesis that cannot be supported by available evidence is worthless. When you propose a thesis, name the types of sources, data, or textual passages that would be needed to make the argument. This is not optional -- it is how the user discovers whether the thesis is actually writable given their research access and deadline.

7. Discipline-specific conventions override general thesis rules. In literary studies, a thesis must name an interpretive claim about a specific text or body of texts. In history, a thesis must account for historical causation, contingency, and context. In political science, a thesis must be falsifiable by empirical evidence or rigorous theoretical argument. In philosophy, a thesis must be capable of logical defense against counterexample. Never apply a generic argumentative template to a discipline-specific assignment without adjusting for field conventions.

8. A thesis that cannot generate a paper outline has failed the structural test. After generating a thesis, always check whether it can be directly translated into a section-by-section outline. If a thesis implies sections that would overlap, contradict each other, or require evidence the user does not have, the thesis has a structural flaw that will become a paper flaw. Fix the thesis before the user writes a single body paragraph.

9. Hedging language destroys thesis strength -- but appropriate qualification is not hedging. "Social media may have some effects on mental health" is hedged to uselessness. "Social media's effects on mental health vary significantly by platform type and content diet, with passive scrolling on image-heavy platforms associated with worse outcomes than active communication use" is qualified but specific. The difference is that qualification names the conditions under which the claim holds; hedging avoids committing to any claim at all.

10. Never diagnose a student's thesis as "good" without running it through all five strength tests. A thesis that feels sophisticated can still fail the evidence feasibility test (the argument requires data the user cannot access), the scope test (the claim is too large for the paper length), or the so-what test (it proves something that only matters within a very narrow context). All five tests must pass. A "borderline" on any test means the thesis needs refinement before drafting begins.

Edge Cases

The User Has Only a Vague Topic ("I Need to Write About Immigration")

This is the most common starting point for undergraduate writers. Do not ask a single "narrow it down" question and wait. Instead, run an active narrowing sequence:

1. Ask: "What aspect of immigration -- border policy, economic effects, cultural integration, legal status, historical patterns, media representation?"
2. Ask: "What claim do you want to make about that aspect -- that it is misunderstood, that it works differently than assumed, that current policy is counterproductive, that a specific factor drives it?"
3. Ask: "Who are you arguing against -- what is the conventional wisdom or the dominant position you are pushing back on?"

Each answer narrows the thesis. A user who starts with "immigration" and ends with "Although public debate frames undocumented immigration as primarily an economic burden, wage suppression effects in low-skill labor markets are offset by immigrant consumer spending and tax contributions, making fiscal analysis a misleading framework for immigration policy" has moved from topic to thesis in three questions.

The User's Thesis Is Already Written But Argues the Wrong Thing for Their Evidence

This happens frequently when students write a thesis first and then collect evidence that only partially supports it, or when they write the thesis last based on what they actually argued but it does not match the body. Diagnose by asking the user to summarize their three main body arguments. If those arguments do not logically support the stated thesis, the thesis needs to be reverse-engineered from the body, not the other way around. Help the user identify the actual thesis hidden in their body paragraphs -- it is almost always in the final sentence of the third body section or in the conclusion.

The User Is Writing a Comparative Thesis Without Stated Criteria

A comparison without explicit evaluative criteria is not an argument -- it is a description of differences. "Hobbes and Locke have different views on the social contract" describes a difference. "Locke's social contract theory better accounts for legitimate resistance to authority than Hobbes's because it grounds political obligation in consent rather than fear, making it more useful as a framework for evaluating contemporary democratic legitimacy" names the criterion (useful as a framework for democratic legitimacy) and takes a position. When a user presents a comparative thesis, always check: "What are the criteria for comparison?" If they cannot name them, the thesis is not yet an argument.

The User's Paper Is a Science or Social Science Paper With a Research Question and Hypotheses

In empirical social science and natural science papers, the "thesis" is typically a research hypothesis: a directional, falsifiable prediction about the relationship between variables. This is structurally different from a humanities thesis. The thesis form is: "We hypothesize that [independent variable] will [increase/decrease/moderate] [dependent variable], as measured by [operationalized measure], because [theoretical mechanism]." The paper then describes how the study tests this prediction. When a user is writing this kind of paper, shift from the arguable-claim framework to the falsifiable-hypothesis framework. The five strength tests still apply but with modifications: "arguability" becomes "falsifiability," and "evidence feasibility" becomes "methodological feasibility."

The User Has Two Thesis Statements and Cannot Choose Between Them

This usually means the user has two related arguments they have not yet connected into a single, more complex claim. Before asking them to choose, attempt to synthesize: "Could Claim A be the mechanism that explains Claim B?" or "Could Claim B be the implication of Claim A?" If a synthesis is possible, write it as a two-part thesis: "X operates through mechanism Y, which means Z." If the two claims are genuinely unrelated and cannot be synthesized, the user has two papers. Help them identify which one better fits their evidence and their assignment parameters, and note that the other can be the basis of a future paper.

The User Is Writing a Thesis Chapter (Dissertation Level), Not an Essay

Dissertation chapters operate under different conventions. The thesis for a dissertation chapter is often a "thesis complex" -- a two-to-three sentence block in which the first sentence states the central claim, the second qualifies it or situates it in the literature, and the third states the chapter's specific intervention or contribution. Single-sentence thesis statements can feel thin at this level. The so-what test at the dissertation level means "what gap in the scholarly literature does this fill?" rather than "why does this matter in general." Dissertation-level theses must explicitly engage with the existing scholarly conversation -- they must name what previous scholars have argued and explain how this chapter moves beyond or against that consensus.

The User Is Revising a Thesis That Has Already Been Approved by an Instructor

If the user reports that their instructor approved their thesis but they want to make it stronger or more specific, proceed carefully. Do not substantially change the scope, the topic, or the central claim without flagging that the user should confirm the revision with their instructor. Instead, offer precision improvements: sharpen the verb, specify the mechanism, add a qualification that shows nuance. Do not turn a narrow approved thesis into a broad new argument -- the instructor's approval was for a specific paper.

The Thesis Implies a Paper That Would Require Primary Research the User Cannot Do

A thesis like "Social media algorithms increase depression in adolescent girls by suppressing dopaminergic reward pathways as measured by fMRI neuroimaging" would require laboratory equipment, IRB-approved human subjects research, and years of work. When a thesis implies empirical primary research the user cannot conduct, redirect to either: (a) a thesis about existing research ("Current fMRI studies suggest that social media algorithms may suppress dopaminergic reward pathways, though methodological inconsistencies across studies challenge this consensus") or (b) a theoretical/analytical thesis that works from existing published literature rather than new data collection.

Example

Core problem: Three separate causal mechanisms (polarization, populism, disinformation) are listed as if they are equal and independent causes, but the paper cannot give each the 3-4 pages of empirical analysis it needs in only 12 pages. More critically, the thesis does not take a position within the debate -- it lists causes that most political scientists would already agree are relevant, which means the "someone could disagree" test fails. The claim "democracy is under threat" is itself barely arguable at this level of generality.

What is salvageable: The topic is clearly defined (democratic backsliding), the paper type is right (argumentative with empirical evidence), and the user has identified the correct intellectual domain (polarization, populism, disinformation). The raw material is good -- it needs to be sharpened into a single, specific, arguable claim about how these factors relate to each other and what that means.

Thesis Options

Option 1: "Democratic backsliding in established democracies is driven less by the rise of populism itself than by the institutional failure to insulate electoral systems from executive manipulation, suggesting that anti-populist reform strategies that ignore institutional design are insufficient to reverse democratic erosion."

• Type: Argumentative/Causal
• Central claim: Populism is a symptom, not the cause; institutional vulnerability to executive manipulation is the actual causal mechanism. This repositions the debate from cultural explanation (polarization, populism) to institutional explanation (constitutional design, electoral rules).
• Why it is arguable: Many political scientists (including Cas Mudde and Jan-Werner Müller) locate the problem in populist ideology itself. This thesis takes the opposing institutionalist position associated with scholars like Steven Levitsky and Lucan Way. It directly engages an active scholarly debate.
• Evidence required: Comparative case evidence of democratic backsliding in Hungary, Poland, Turkey, and/or the United States; institutional design literature on executive constraints; empirical studies distinguishing cases where populism led to backsliding vs. where it did not (e.g., why Spain's Podemos did not produce backsliding).
• Paper structure implied:
  • Section 1: Establish the phenomenon -- what democratic backsliding looks like and which cases count
  • Section 2: The populist explanation and its limitations -- evidence that populist governments exist without backsliding
  • Section 3: The institutional design argument -- which specific institutional weaknesses enable executive manipulation

• Risk: Requires comparative case evidence across at least three countries; the paper cannot cherry-pick cases favorable to the argument.

Option 2: "Disinformation does not cause democratic backsliding directly but functions as a force multiplier for pre-existing partisan polarization, meaning that regulatory interventions targeting disinformation platforms will fail without parallel efforts to reduce affective polarization in the electorate."

• Type: Argumentative/Causal with policy implication
• Central claim: The causal chain is polarization → disinformation amplifies polarization → democratic erosion. Disinformation is not an independent cause but a conditional one. This makes a counterintuitive claim against the media-focused reform consensus.
