Building Your First Map
STEP 1: ANCHOR ON THE USER
- Who is the user? (Be specific)
- What do they need? (Their actual need, not your product)
- Write the user need at the top of the map
STEP 2: MAP THE VALUE CHAIN
- What components are needed to meet that user need?
- For each component, what does IT depend on?
- Work downward: visible -> enabling -> infrastructure
- Draw dependency lines (arrows from need to dependency)
STEP 3: POSITION ON THE EVOLUTION AXIS
- For each component, determine its evolutionary stage
- Ask: Is this novel? Custom? A product category? A commodity?
- Place it on the horizontal axis accordingly
- This is the hardest part - discuss with your team
STEP 4: ADD MOVEMENT
- Which components are evolving rightward? (Becoming more commodity)
- Mark with arrows showing direction of evolution
- This reveals where the landscape is shifting
STEP 5: ANNOTATE WITH CONTEXT
- Mark components you build vs buy
- Mark components where you have advantage or disadvantage
- Note regulatory constraints, market signals, competitor positions
