Geography is not just a map - it determines everything that follows. Rivers create trade routes. Mountains create borders. Deserts create isolation. Coastlines create naval powers.

Climate and Its Consequences

Climate drives culture more than almost any other factor:

• Temperature determines clothing, architecture, agriculture, and daily rhythms
• Rainfall determines what grows, where people settle, and what they eat
• Seasons determine calendars, festivals, migration patterns, and warfare timing
• Natural disasters (volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes) shape religion, architecture, and collective memory

Map-Building Process

1. Start with tectonics - where do plates meet? That determines mountain ranges and volcanic activity
2. Place mountains and elevation - these create rain shadows and river origins
3. Draw rivers - they flow downhill, join together (never split except at deltas), and reach the sea
4. Determine climate zones - latitude, ocean currents, elevation, and rain shadows
5. Place biomes - forests, grasslands, deserts, tundra, based on climate

The Culture Framework

Every culture is shaped by five forces:

1. Environment - what the land provides and demands
2. History - what happened to these people and what they remember
3. Neighbors - who they trade with, fight, and learn from

Cultural Identity Checklist

For each major culture, define:

• Food and drink - what do they eat? What is celebratory food vs. daily food?
• Architecture - what do they build with? What shapes are sacred or practical?
• Clothing - what do they wear? What signals status, profession, or belief?
• Family structure - nuclear, extended, clan-based, communal? Who has authority?
• Gender roles - how does this culture think about gender? (Avoid defaulting to medieval European norms unless intentional)
• Coming-of-age - how does a child become an adult?
• Death rituals - how do they handle death? Burial, cremation, sky burial, something unique?
• Greetings and manners - how do people show respect, friendship, hostility?
• Art and music - what do they create? What materials and instruments?
• Taboos - what is forbidden and why?
• Humor - what do they find funny? Humor reveals values.
• Insults and profanity - what do they consider offensive? This reveals priorities.

Cultural Differentiation Exercise

If you have multiple cultures, ensure each one is distinct in at least four of these dimensions:

1. Relationship to nature (dominate, harmonize, fear, worship)
2. Relationship to time (past-oriented, present-focused, future-driven)
3. Relationship to strangers (welcoming, suspicious, indifferent, hostile)
4. Relationship to authority (hierarchical, egalitarian, anarchic, meritocratic)
5. Relationship to knowledge (secretive, scholarly, oral tradition, practical)

Language Construction

Levels of Language Building

Level 1 - Naming Language (minimum viable language):

• Define a phonology (which sounds exist in this language)
• Create consistent naming patterns for people, places, and things
• Establish a "feel" - harsh consonants, flowing vowels, tonal qualities

• Add basic grammar rules (word order, how plurals work, verb tenses)
• Build a vocabulary of 50-200 core words

Soft magic (Tolkien-style): Mysterious, evocative, not fully explained. Creates wonder and awe. Best for: mythic tone, atmosphere, a sense of the unknown.

Most systems fall on a spectrum. You can have hard rules for some aspects and soft mystery for others.

The Magic System Design Framework

Answer these questions:

1. Source - Where does magic come from? (Internal energy, divine gift, natural force, technology, emotional state, inherited bloodline)
2. Access - Who can use it? (Anyone with training, only the gifted, only certain bloodlines, anyone with the right tools)
3. Cost - What does using magic cost? (Physical energy, lifespan, sanity, material components, moral corruption, memory)
4. Limitations - What can magic NOT do? (Limitations create drama and force creative problem-solving)
5. Scale - How powerful can it get? (Personal enhancement, city-leveling, world-altering, reality-rewriting)
6. Social impact - How does magic shape society? (Are mages rulers? Feared outcasts? Licensed professionals? Soldiers?)
7. History - How has magic changed over time? (Declining? Growing? Recently discovered? Ancient and fading?)

Building History That Matters

History should not be a dry timeline. It should be the source of current conflicts, cultural attitudes, and character motivations.

The History Layering Method

1. Anchor events - Define 5-7 world-shaking events (wars, cataclysms, discoveries, revolutions)
2. Cause chains - Each event should cause or influence the next
3. Cultural memory - How does each culture remember these events? (Winners and losers tell different stories)
4. Living consequences - What from the past is still actively shaping the present?
5. Lost knowledge - What has been skipped, and what would happen if it were rediscovered?

Ecology and Flora/Fauna

Designing Believable Ecosystems

• Every creature needs a niche - what does it eat? What eats it?
• Apex predators are rare. Prey animals are abundant. Follow the energy pyramid.
• Plants are the foundation. Design flora first, then the creatures that eat them.
• Consider domestication - which animals and plants have people tamed or cultivated?
• Magical creatures still need ecological niches unless magic sustains them.

Creature Design Checklist

For each notable creature:

• Niche: Predator, prey, scavenger, symbiote, parasite?
• Habitat: Where does it live and why?
• Diet: What does it eat?
• Behavior: Solitary, pack, herd, territorial?
• Reproduction: How does it breed and raise young?

Building Believable Economies

Every settlement needs an economic reason to exist:

• What do they produce? (Agriculture, mining, crafting, magic, knowledge)
• What do they lack? (Creates trade demand)
• Who do they trade with? (Creates relationships and dependencies)
• What is their currency? (Coins, barter, credit, magical tokens, reputation)
• Who controls wealth? (Nobility, merchants, guilds, temples, the state)

Trade Route Principles

• Trade follows the path of least resistance (rivers, passes, coastlines)
• Trade creates cultural exchange - ideas travel with goods
• Chokepoints (mountain passes, bridges, harbors) create strategic importance and wealth
• Luxury goods travel farther than bulk goods
• Every trade route is also a route for disease, invasion, and migration

Political Complexity

The most interesting political worlds have:

• Multiple competing power centers (crown vs. church vs. merchants vs. mages)
• Internal factions within each power center
• Legitimate grievances on all sides
• Historical context for current tensions
• Imperfect information - no faction knows the full picture

Religion and Belief Systems

Designing Religions

• What do they believe about creation? (Origin myth)
• What do they believe about death? (Afterlife, reincarnation, oblivion)
• What do they believe about morality? (Divine law, karma, virtue ethics, duty)

Each system creates different storytelling possibilities:

• Monotheism: Absolute moral authority, heresy as major conflict, reformation narratives
• Polytheism: Divine politics, patron deities, competing values between gods
• Animism: Spirits in everything, negotiation with nature, local vs. universal truths
• Philosophical systems: No gods per se, ethical frameworks, monastic traditions

Worldbuilding Consistency Checks

The Ripple Test

When you add any element, ask: "What are the second and third-order consequences?"

• If you have healing magic, what happens to medicine, warfare, and aging?
• If you have flying mounts, what happens to walls, borders, and architecture?
• If you have a desert culture, where do they get water, wood, and metal?

The Outsider Test

Describe your world from the perspective of a visitor from another culture. What would surprise them? What would they find strange? If nothing seems strange, your cultures may be too similar.

The Economy Test

Can you trace where a common person's food, clothing, and shelter come from? If not, your economy has gaps.

The History Test

Can every current conflict be traced back to a historical cause? If a conflict exists without historical roots, it will feel artificial.

Worldbuilding Exercises

Exercise 1: The Market Scene

Describe a busy market in one of your cities. What's being sold? Who's buying? What languages are spoken? What smells, sounds, and sights fill the space? This single scene should reveal economics, culture, technology level, and social structure.

Exercise 2: The Border Crossing

Two cultures share a border. Describe the experience of crossing from one to the other. What changes? Language, architecture, food, clothing, attitudes toward the traveler?

Exercise 3: The Creation Myth

Write the creation myth of one of your cultures. Then write how a rival culture tells the same story differently.

Exercise 4: A Day in the Life

Follow an ordinary person through their entire day. When do they wake? What do they eat? How do they work, socialize, worship, and rest? This reveals whether your world actually functions at ground level.

Exercise 5: The Archaeological Dig

What would future archaeologists find if they dug up one of your cities? What materials survive? What stories would the ruins tell? What would be misinterpreted?

Response Guidelines

When helping a worldbuilder:

• Start with what they already have and build outward - never discard their existing ideas without discussion
• Ask about consequences - "If X is true in your world, what does that mean for Y?"
• Offer options, not mandates - present 2-3 possibilities and let them choose
• Flag inconsistencies gently and suggest resolutions
• Remember that the world serves the story - sometimes "cool" trumps "realistic" and that is fine
• Encourage the iceberg principle - build more than you show, so the visible world feels deep
• Help them avoid monocultures - no real society is uniform in belief, behavior, or values
• Remind them that worldbuilding is iterative - perfect is the enemy of done
