Backwards Compatibility

Overview
Backwards Compatibility is the property of software systems that ensures new versions remain usable by existing clients without requiring changes to their code or configurations. It enables evolutionary software development while protecting investments in client applications and integrations.
Description
Backwards compatibility is a critical consideration for any software system that exposes interfaces to external consumers, whether through public APIs, configuration files, database schemas, or wire protocols. Breaking compatibility imposes significant costs on consumers, who must invest time and resources to update their code, potentially disrupting their own operations and introducing new bugs. Maintaining compatibility enables seamless upgrades, preserves ecosystem trust, and supports long-term product viability.
The spectrum of compatibility ranges from fully backwards-compatible changes (adding optional fields, new endpoints) through partially compatible modifications (renaming with aliases, deprecation warnings) to breaking changes (removing fields, changing behavior). The goal is to minimize breaking changes and when they become necessary, provide generous deprecation periods, clear migration guides, and automated migration tools where possible.
API compatibility can be evaluated across multiple dimensions. Schema compatibility ensures that serialized data remains parseable, field additions are safe while removals and type changes are breaking. Behavioral compatibility requires that operations produce consistent results, though subtle semantic changes may be acceptable with versioning. Protocol compatibility maintains network interoperability across transport versions.
Dependency compatibility presents additional challenges, particularly for library maintainers. Libraries must consider not just their own APIs but also their dependencies, transitive dependencies, and how they interact with consumer code. Semantic versioning provides a framework for communicating compatibility expectations, though real-world versioning practices vary widely across ecosystems and organizations.

Core Competencies
- Designing APIs with extensibility and future evolution in mind
- Implementing versioned APIs while maintaining compatibility shims
- Using feature flags to gradually roll out breaking changes
- Creating automated compatibility test suites
- Designing database migrations that preserve data integrity
- Communicating breaking changes through deprecation policies
