• The trust instrument governs distribution standards, trustee fee provisions, and any deviations from statutory principal-income allocation defaults; review it before finalizing any allocation.
• The prior-year accounting establishes the beginning figures for the current accounting period; the opening values must match the prior year's closing values exactly.
• Tax forms and brokerage year-end statements are the authoritative sources for investment income, gains, and cost basis; internal ledger entries that conflict with these statements must be resolved.
• Sales, purchases, receipts, and distributions often have linked principal and income consequences; trace each event through the schedule set rather than treating schedules as independent.
• Temporal sequencing matters: valuation is measured as of the transaction or distribution date, while income classification follows the accrual or payment rule applicable to the instrument or expense.

6. Output structure conventions

• Produce two deliverables: the formal annual accounting first, then a separate issues memorandum.
• Draft the accounting as a court-ready fiduciary account with conventional schedules, not as a spreadsheet dump or a prose memo.
• Use standard accounting sections such as principal receipts and disbursements, income receipts and charges, asset inventory, realized gains and losses, distributions, and notes explaining methodology and allocation decisions.
• Include separate identification of tax-exempt income within the income presentation.
