Environment Management for AEM Edge Delivery Services
Audit an AEM Edge Delivery Services project's current environment configuration, document preview and live URL patterns, automate Admin API operations, configure push invalidation, and establish branch-based multi-environment strategies. Context
AEM Edge Delivery Services operates with two distinct environments per branch. The preview environment (*.hlx.page or *.aem.page) reflects the latest authored content after a user clicks "Preview" in the AEM Sidekick browser extension. The live environment (*.hlx.live or *.aem.live, or a custom domain) reflects the latest published content after a user clicks "Publish" in Sidekick. Preview is the staging area; live is production. Both environments are served by Adobe's CDN, but with different cache configurations — preview has short TTLs for rapid iteration, while live has longer TTLs optimized for performance.
The AEM Admin API at admin.hlx.page provides programmatic control over both environments. A POST to /preview/{owner}/{repo}/{branch}/{path} updates the preview cache for a specific page, pulling the latest content from the configured content source (SharePoint or Google Drive) and the latest code from the Git branch. A POST to /live/{owner}/{repo}/{branch}/{path} promotes the current preview version to live. A DELETE to either endpoint purges the cached version. The bulk endpoint (/* as the path) invalidates all pages, which is useful after significant code changes.
Branch-based environment management is a powerful EDS pattern. Each Git branch gets its own preview and live environments automatically. A branch named staging produces preview URLs at https://staging--{repo}--{owner}.aem.page/. This means teams can create isolated environments for feature development, QA testing, or client review simply by creating a Git branch — no infrastructure provisioning required. However, only the main branch is typically connected to the custom production domain.
Step 0: Create Todo List
Before starting, create a checklist to track progress:
- Audit current environment setup (branches, domains, content source)
- Document all preview and live URLs for the project
- Design and configure the branch strategy for multi-environment workflows
- Set up Admin API automation scripts for preview, publish, and invalidation
- Configure push invalidation at
tools.aem.live - Create environment health check scripts
- Generate the environment management runbook
Step 1: Audit Current Environment Setup
Examine the project to understand the current environment landscape:
- Check
fstab.yaml— this file defines the content source (SharePoint or Google Drive mountpoint). Theurlfield determines where content is fetched from. Different branches can have differentfstab.yamlfiles pointing to different content sources (e.g., a staging SharePoint site vs. production). - Check Git branches. List all remote branches. Identify which branches are actively used and which correspond to environments. Common patterns:
main(production),stagingorstage(QA),developordev(development). - Check for custom domains. Look for CNAME records or documentation indicating custom domains. The custom domain typically points to the
mainbranch's live environment. - Check for
.hlxorhelix-configuration files. Older EDS projects may havehelix-config.yamlor.hlx/config.yamlwith environment-specific settings. - Check for existing Admin API usage. Search the repository for references to
admin.hlx.pageoradmin.aem.pagein scripts, workflows, or documentation. - Determine the site's current URL pattern. EDS has two URL formats — legacy (
hlx.page/hlx.live) and current (aem.page/aem.live). Identify which the project uses.
Report a summary of the environment landscape before proceeding.
Step 2: Document Environment URLs
Build a complete URL map for the project. For a project owned by {owner} with repo {repo}:

Additional Branches
For each active branch, document the same URL patterns. Emphasize that branch-based URLs are automatically available — no configuration needed.
Key URL Rules
- Preview URLs reflect the latest content + latest code from that branch.
- Live URLs reflect the last published version of the content + code.
- The Admin API status endpoint returns JSON with
preview.lastModifiedandlive.lastModifiedtimestamps — useful for debugging staleness.
Step 3: Configure Branch Strategy
Design a branch-based multi-environment strategy based on the team's needs:
Simple Strategy (Small Teams, 1-3 authors)
main— production. All content is authored, previewed, and published here.- No additional branches needed. Preview (
aem.page) serves as the staging environment.
Standard Strategy (Medium Teams, 4-10 contributors)
main— production. Protected branch, requires PR reviews.staging— QA and client review. Feature branches merge here first.- Feature branches — isolated development. Named
feature/{description}.
Advanced Strategy (Large Teams, regulated content)
main— production.staging— pre-production QA with a separate content source.develop— integration branch for active development.- Feature branches — short-lived, merged to

For each branch in the chosen strategy, configure:
- The branch protection rules (require reviews, status checks).
- The
fstab.yamlcontent source (same source for all branches, or separate sources per environment). - The Admin API automation (which branches trigger automated preview/publish).
Important EDS constraint: The AEM Code Sync bot watches all branches. Any push to any branch updates that branch's preview environment. This is both powerful (instant previews for any branch) and risky (accidental pushes to main go live immediately). Branch protection on main is essential.
Step 4: Set Up Admin API Automation
Create scripts for common Admin API operations:

Generate a shell script (scripts/admin-api.sh) that wraps these operations with error handling, logging, and retry logic. The script should accept commands like ./admin-api.sh preview /about or ./admin-api.sh publish-all.
Also generate a Node.js version (scripts/admin-api.mjs) for integration with GitHub Actions or programmatic use. The script should export functions: previewPage(path), publishPage(path), invalidateAll(), and getStatus(path).
Step 5: Configure Push Invalidation
Push invalidation ensures that when content is published, the CDN cache is updated immediately instead of waiting for TTL expiry.
- Navigate to
tools.aem.live. This is Adobe's configuration dashboard for EDS sites. - Set up push invalidation by linking the site to the CDN configuration. Push invalidation requires the site to be properly registered with Adobe.
- Verify push invalidation is working by publishing a page and checking that the live URL reflects the change within seconds (not minutes).
Document the push invalidation configuration:
- Which CDN is in use (Adobe's built-in CDN, or a customer-managed CDN like Cloudflare or Fastly).
- Whether push invalidation is available (it requires the site to be on Adobe's managed CDN or have a properly configured customer CDN integration).
- Fallback strategy if push invalidation is not available: use the Admin API
DELETEon the live endpoint to manually purge, or wait for the 5-minute default TTL.
Common issue: Custom CDN setups (e.g., Cloudflare in front of hlx.live) can interfere with push invalidation. If the site uses a custom CDN, document the additional cache purge step needed at the CDN layer.
Step 6: Create Environment Health Checks
Generate a health check script (scripts/env-health-check.mjs) that verifies each environment is functioning correctly:
Checks per environment:
- Reachability — HTTP GET to the environment URL returns 200.
- Content freshness — Compare
last-modifiedheader against expected value. Flag if content is more than 24 hours stale on preview or more than 7 days stale on live. - Code sync status — Call the Admin API status endpoint and verify
code.statusis200. - Content source connectivity — Call the Admin API status endpoint and verify
content.sourceLocationis accessible. - Custom domain routing — If a custom domain is configured, verify it resolves correctly and serves the expected content (compare against the
aem.liveURL). - SSL certificate validity — Check the certificate expiration date on custom domains. Flag if expiring within 30 days.
Generate a GitHub Actions workflow (.github/workflows/env-health.yaml) that runs these checks on a schedule (every 6 hours) and sends alerts via GitHub Issues if any check fails.
Step 7: Generate Environment Management Runbook
Produce a comprehensive docs/environment-runbook.md covering:

Incident Response

Key Principles
- Preview is staging, live is production. Always validate content in preview before publishing to live. Treat the preview environment as your QA gate.
- Branches are free environments. Creating a Git branch gives you a full, isolated preview and live environment at no cost. Use branches liberally for features, experiments, and client reviews.
- Protect
mainlike production. A push tomainupdates the production site via Code Sync. Always require PR reviews and CI checks before merging. - Automate invalidation, do not rely on TTLs. Use the Admin API to actively invalidate preview and live caches after code or content changes. Waiting for cache expiry causes confusion and slows down feedback loops.
- Monitor environment health proactively. Scheduled health checks catch issues (stale content, broken domains, expired certificates) before users report them.
- Document the URL map. Every team member should know exactly which URL corresponds to which environment and branch. A single source of truth prevents confusion.
