Python Code Style & Documentation
Consistent code style and clear documentation make codebases maintainable and collaborative. This skill covers modern Python tooling, naming conventions, and documentation standards.
Toolchain: Prefer uv (environments and dependencies), Ruff (lint + format), and ty (type checking), matching the FastAPI other-tools reference. mypy or pyright remain valid alternatives if a project already standardizes on them.
Duplication vs tooling: Enable uv, Ruff, ty, imports policy, and docstring norms immediately. Defer merging similar implementations until you know they share one contract—the python-design-patterns rule of three applies to abstractions, not to whether you add a formatter on day one.

Quick Start
Use uv to manage the environment, then add dev tools (see uv if needed):

Fundamental Patterns
Pattern 1: Modern Python Tooling (uv + Ruff)
Use uv to create/sync virtual environments and lock dependencies. Use Ruff as the linter and formatter; it replaces flake8, isort, and black with one fast tool.
When building FastAPI apps, add Ruff’s FAST rules (FastAPI-specific lint checks), as suggested in the FastAPI other-tools reference.

Pattern 2: Type Checking with ty
Use ty for static type checking when it is available—same guidance as the FastAPI other-tools reference. It reads [tool.ty] in pyproject.toml (see ty configuration).

Alternatives: Teams on mypy ([tool.mypy]) or pyright ([tool.pyright]) should keep one checker in CI and match the rest of this skill (strictness, typed public APIs). Prefer ty for new FastAPI-aligned projects to stay consistent with the FastAPI skill.

Follow PEP 8 with emphasis on clarity over brevity.

Pattern 4: Import Organization
Group imports in a consistent order: standard library, third-party, local.

In FastAPI projects that follow fastapi-config-01, prefer SQLModel (with Pydantic) for ORM/table models instead of importing SQLAlchemy primitives in new code.
