Dystopian

A dystopia describes a system that works. If it did not work, it would not have lasted, and there would be no novel.

1. Reading contract

The reader demands: a coherent, effective system, credible acceptance by the population, a character who sees what others no longer see, and a high price for that lucidity.

2. The law that it works

A dystopian system must deliver something real: safety, abundance, order, equality, freedom from anxiety. Without a benefit, nobody would accept it, and the critique lands on nothing.

Write first what the system solves, then what it costs.

3. Mechanics of control

Four levers, combined:

1. Material: rationing, housing, mobility, health.
2. Informational: language, archives, measurement, statistics.
3. Social: denunciation, merit, visible hierarchy, belonging.
4. Intimate: family, sexuality, parentage, mourning.

The intimate lever is the most effective in fiction and the least often handled.

Control need not be total. Zones of tolerance act as a valve and make the system more credible than perfect surveillance would.

4. The language of power

• Official vocabulary replaces uncomfortable words with neutral administrative terms.
• Characters use that vocabulary without irony, which is what produces the effect.
• The narrator does not translate: the reader is left to see the gap.
• One well-chosen official phrase is worth more than ten neologisms.

5. The lucid character

• They do not begin in revolt. They begin compliant, and the crack comes from a detail, often an intimate one.
• Their lucidity must cost them before it serves them.
• They are not right about everything: their solutions can be worse.
• Collective revolt, if it comes, obeys a logistics: food, communication, money, betrayal.

6. Endings

Three possible endings, all legitimate:

• The system absorbs the revolt and strengthens.
• The character escapes individually, without changing the system.
• The system falls, and the narrative shows the cost of the fall and the disorder after it.

Forbidden: the system falling in one scene, with no logistics and no consequence.

7. Cliches to turn or prohibit

• The single visible, hateable leader.
• The already-organised resistance that was waiting for the protagonist.
• The chosen one who triggers the revolution by existing.
• Total uniformity of the population.
• The final speech that explains the novel's thesis.

8. Exit checks

• The system's real benefit is shown before its critique.
• At least one sympathetic character sincerely believes in it.
• Control operates through all four levers, the intimate included.
• The protagonist's lucidity costs them before it profits them.
• No collapse of the system without logistics.

9. Auto-critique

The eleven constitution axes, plus four genre axes: credibility of the system, sincerity of the acceptance, the intimate control embodied, absence of a stated thesis.

Threshold: no axis below 3, average at least 4 on credibility of the system.

10. Interfaces

• Upstream: science-fiction, world-builder.
• Neighbours: genres/political-fiction, genres/cyberpunk.
