Summary

Quantify memory consumption and access latency when choosing between eager pre-population versus lazy on-demand initialization of spectra variables in MsBackend implementations. When to use

You are designing or optimizing an MsBackend implementation and need to decide whether to pre-populate the @spectraVars slot with all core spectra variable columns (mz, intensity, rtime, scanIndex, precursorMz, precursorIntensity, acquisitionNum, msLevel) at initialization time, or defer column creation until spectraData() is invoked. Use this skill when memory footprint and data access speed are both constraints and you need empirical evidence to justify the tradeoff.

When NOT to use

• Your backend is purely read-only (e.g., MsBackendCached or database-backed like MsBackendMassbankSql) where all data is retrieved on-the-fly anyway—lazy initialization is already forced by architecture.
• Memory is not a constraint (e.g., small datasets, single-machine workflows with ample RAM); pre-population may be simpler and faster despite overhead.
• You have no flexibility to choose initialization strategy—e.g., the backend API or parent class already mandates eager or lazy behavior.

How to apply

Invoke spectraData() on both objects to trigger spectraVariables retrieval and, in the minimal variant, internal fillCoreSpectraVariables() population. Measure in-memory object size using object.size() before and after spectraData() execution for each variant. Record wall-clock execution time for spectraData() calls using system.time() or equivalent. Compare absolute memory footprints, delta memory growth post-call, and access latency between eager and lazy strategies. Document the overhead ratio and access-time delta to justify backend design decisions based on expected usage patterns (frequent small-scale queries vs. bulk extraction).

Limitations

• Measurement is backend-specific: results depend on number of spectra, number of core variables, and data types (NumericList vs. atomic vectors). Generalization to other backends requires re-measurement.
• fillCoreSpectraVariables() implementation details (e.g., caching, vectorization) may change; timing measurements should be re-validated after backend updates.
