When to use
After implementing a neural network component that will feed into a downstream architecture (e.g., a transformer). Use this skill when the module's outputs must meet strict dimensional and numerical requirements, or when variable-length or multi-modal inputs (peak m/z and intensity arrays) must be normalized deterministically.
When NOT to use
- Module is already in production and passing all integration tests in the full pipeline.
- Input is a pre-computed embedding or feature table that does not require module-level validation.
- The downstream architecture has no strict shape or numerical requirements.

How to apply
Create unit tests that verify: (1) output tensor shape matches the expected fixed-length representation compatible with transformer input; (2) output numerical values fall within the expected range (e.g., bounded by sinusoidal function properties); (3) orthogonality or independence of basis functions (for embedders using sine/cosine encodings at multiple frequency scales); (4) handling of variable-length peak lists without shape errors; (5) input normalization correctness; (6) deterministic outputs given the same input. Run these tests on representative subsets of your data before full training.
