When to use

Apply this skill when designing a contrastive learning pipeline for ion images or other data modalities where you need to process multiple augmented versions of the same input through an encoder and enforce similarity between the resulting representations. Specifically, use this when the learning objective requires maximizing similarity between augmentations while avoiding computational redundancy and ensuring parameter consistency across augmented branches.

When NOT to use

• When you need different transformation pipelines for different augmentation types—use separate encoders if augmentations require fundamentally different feature extraction paths.
• When the two inputs require different model architectures or hyperparameters—parameter sharing assumes identical architectural configuration.
• If you require independent feature learning per augmentation (i.e., you want to learn mode-specific rather than invariant representations).

How to apply

Instantiate a single ResNet18 encoder instance configured to output 512-dimensional feature vectors. Rather than creating separate encoder instances for each augmented image, configure the encoder to sequentially process both augmented images through the shared ResNet18 weights. During the forward pass, propagate the first augmented image through the encoder to produce a 512-D representation vector, then propagate the second augmented image through the identical set of parameters to produce a second 512-D vector. Freeze or selectively train the convolutional and pooling layers according to your contrastive learning objective (e.g., using stop-gradient operations to prevent representation collapse). Verify that both output tensors have shape [batch_size × 512] and that gradients propagate correctly through the shared weights during backpropagation.

Evaluation signals

• Output tensors from both augmented inputs have identical shape [batch_size × 512]
• Gradient flow during backpropagation confirms that both augmented inputs update the same parameter set (no duplicate weight updates)
• Numerical stability check: representation vectors have reasonable magnitude (no NaN or Inf values) and do not exhibit exploding/vanishing gradients
• Contrastive loss decreases over training iterations, indicating that the shared encoder learns to maximize similarity between augmentations of the same ion image
• Verify that stop-gradient operation or similar mechanism prevents representation collapse by monitoring cosine similarity between augmentation pairs (should remain < 1.0 after convergence)

Limitations

• Parameter sharing assumes both augmented images have identical input dimensions and compatible intensity ranges; preprocessing must normalize ion images to ResNet18 input specifications.
• The shared encoder architecture is fixed to ResNet18; switching to different backbone architectures (e.g., Vision Transformer, custom CNN) requires architectural redesign but follows the same parameter-sharing principle.
• Sequential processing of augmented images through the same encoder may introduce subtle temporal or memory effects if the encoder has recurrent or stateful components; ResNet18 is stateless so this is not an issue in this implementation.
• Contrastive learning objectives using parameter sharing can suffer from representation collapse if projection and prediction modules are not properly configured (addressed in DeepION via explicit stop-gradient operations).
