Rudolf Steiner — The Agriculture Course (1924) Eight lectures delivered at Koberwitz in June 1924 at the request of farmers who were observing declining seed quality, animal health, and soil vitality in the decades after chemical agriculture began. Root days (Moon in earth signs) produce better root crops; flower days (Moon in air signs) produce better flowering crops and honey; fruit days (Moon in fire signs) produce better fruiting crops and seed; leaf days (Moon in water signs) produce better leaf crops but poorer seed vitality. Her specific and actionable contribution: the annual Biodynamic Sowing and Planting Calendar, which translates this into a daily guide. The practical implication: harvesting for keeping quality should be done on fruit or root days; harvesting for immediate consumption can follow any favourable day.

Ehrenfried Pfeiffer — Laboratory to Farm Steiner's student and closest scientific collaborator. Pfeiffer developed the copper chloride crystallisation method for assessing the formative forces in food and plant material — one of the few tools that discriminates biodynamic from organic from conventional produce in a way that standard chemical analysis cannot detect. His most practically important contribution was demonstrating that Preparation 500 (horn manure) reliably stimulates earthworm populations, root development, and humus formation when correctly applied — establishing the biological mechanism behind what Steiner had described cosmologically. Preparations

What each preparation is, how to make it, when and how to apply it.

The nine biodynamic preparations divide into three functional groups: the two field sprays (500 and 501), the six composting preparations (502–507), and the supplementary spray preparation (508). Each serves a different function. Begin with 500 — it is the most universally applicable, lowest-risk, and most biologically documented preparation in the suite.

Field Spray Preparations

500 — How to make and apply:

• Fill a cow horn with mature cow manure (firm, not sloppy; no synthetic additives). The horn must come from a horned (not polled) cow. Pack tightly, seal with clay or soil, and bury over winter (around October, retrieve around April in the northern hemisphere) at 40–60cm depth in biologically active soil.
• Application rate: 25–40g of recovered material per acre (60–100g/ha).
• Stirring: stirring is the critical step. Add the material to lukewarm water (35–38°C, never hot), stir vigorously in one direction until a deep vortex forms, then reverse direction quickly and stir the other way. Alternate for one continuous hour. The stirring creates rhythmic alternation between chaos and order that is believed to potentise the preparation.
• Apply in evening (the soil is opening as temperature drops) as a fine spray on moist soil. Aim for soil coverage, not plant coverage.
• Apply in spring before growth and in autumn after main crops — two primary applications per year minimum.

501 — How to make and apply:

• Fill a cow horn with finely powdered quartz (rock crystal ground to a fine flour). Pack tightly, bury over summer (May–October in northern hemisphere).
• Application rate: 1g per acre (2.5g/ha) — minute quantities.
• Stirring: same method as 500, one full hour.
• Apply in early morning as a fine mist over growing plant material (not soil). The sun activates it throughout the day.
• Use during the main growing phase — especially useful on crops where flavour, colour, and keeping quality are primary goals. Do not use on seedlings or newly transplanted plants.

Composting Preparations (502–507)

These six preparations are inserted into compost heaps or manure piles to guide the decomposition process. They are each made from medicinal plants, typically fermented inside animal organs that enhance their specific qualities.

How to apply composting preparations:

• Insert 502–506 (solid) into holes approximately 50cm deep in the compost pile — one hole per preparation, distributed across the pile.
• Dilute 507 (liquid) in lukewarm water, stir briefly, and pour over the entire surface of the pile.
• Do this once when building the pile; a second application when turning is optional.
• The preparations regulate decomposition from within — do not expect dramatic visible changes; the results appear in the finished compost quality.

508 — Horsetail (Equisetum arvense)

Not fermented in an animal organ — made as a strong tea from horsetail herb, diluted, and sprayed on plants or soil. Its primary use is reducing fungal disease pressure, particularly in wet conditions. Apply after rain or when fungal pressure is expected. It is the most accessible preparation for a beginner — horsetail can be foraged or purchased as a dried herb.

Sourcing preparations: Most national biodynamic associations offer preparations for purchase from certified makers if you cannot make your own. Starter sets are available. Making your own is preferable long-term — it connects you to the rhythms and materials of the preparations — but sourcing is a completely valid starting point.

How to read and use the biodynamic calendar for sowing, planting, harvesting, and processing.

The biodynamic calendar is built on the position of the Moon as it moves through the twelve zodiac constellations over approximately 27.3 days (the sidereal month). The constellations are grouped into four elemental types — earth, water, air/light, and fire/warmth — each associated with a different plant organ.

The four day types:

Additional calendar considerations:

• Ascending and descending Moon: The Moon ascends through the zodiac for roughly two weeks then descends. During descent, plants are considered more receptive to soil-side activities (composting, planting out, grafting). During ascent, harvesting and processing for best quality are favoured.
• Perigee and apogee: Perigee (Moon closest to Earth) is generally unfavourable for sowing — germination and plant resistance can be weaker. Apogee (Moon furthest from Earth) is relatively neutral to favourable.
• Eclipse days: Both lunar and solar eclipses are considered unfavourable — avoid sowing, harvesting, and preparation application.
• Node days: When the Moon crosses the ecliptic (the nodes) — also considered unfavourable for sowing and harvesting.

How to use the calendar in practice:

You do not need to follow it rigidly to benefit from it. Start with one or two applications:

1. Harvest timing: Harvest root crops on root days and fruiting crops on fruit days. This has the most consistent effect on storage quality and flavour, and requires no change to your growing system — only your harvest scheduling.

2. Sowing key crops: Choose the day type that matches the plant organ you are growing. For tomatoes (fruit crop), sow on a fruit day. For carrots (root crop), sow on a root day. If that day is inconvenient, the next favourable day within that window is fine — do not contort your farm operations to follow the calendar; let the calendar inform your scheduling where it fits naturally.

3. Preparation application: Apply 500 on a root day in the afternoon. Apply 501 on a fruit or flower day in the morning.

4. Processing and value-adding: Wine, cheese, bread, and fermented foods made on their corresponding day types (fruit for wine, flower for cheese and honey) are reported to have better quality and keeping characteristics.

Working out what day it is without buying the calendar:

The annual Maria Thun Biodynamic Sowing and Planting Calendar (published by Floris Books) is the standard reference — available in most agricultural book suppliers. Apps exist (Biodynamic Sowing and Planting, Cosmic Rhythm) that provide daily guidance on a smartphone. If you are outside the northern European focus of the Thun calendar, regional biodynamic associations publish locally adapted versions.

What the evidence says:

The research base for the biodynamic calendar is mixed. Maria Thun's published trials showed consistent results. Independent replication has produced variable findings — some confirm the pattern, some do not. The most robust and replicated effects are in germination rates and wine and honey quality. Approach the calendar as a working hypothesis: observe your own crops over several seasons and form your own assessment. The calendar does not override good agronomy — healthy soil and good timing of inputs matters more than optimising for lunar position.

Farm Organism

Designing the farm as a self-contained organism: integration of livestock, compost, crops, and habitat.

The farm organism concept is Steiner's most ecologically ambitious idea: the farm should be capable of generating all its own fertility internally, with purchased inputs representing a nutritional deficit rather than a normal operating requirement. The biological parallel is an organism — a body that maintains itself through internal cycling, drawing on external resources only for what it genuinely cannot generate within itself.

The four elements of the farm organism:

1. Livestock Livestock are not optional in biodynamic farming — they are the engine of fertility cycling. Cow manure is the base material for Preparation 500 and for the composting preparations. The cattle herd (or at minimum some horned cattle) provides the horns needed for the preparations and the manure of the specific quality required. Sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry each contribute differently to the farm's fertility and pest management. Without livestock (or access to manure from certified biodynamic livestock), the preparations system is constrained.

If you cannot keep cattle: biodynamic association guidelines vary on sourcing manure from non-biodynamic certified cattle. In practice, most small biodynamic growers without cattle source manure from known local farms with traditionally managed, pasture-raised, horned cattle. This is a pragmatic compromise that most practitioners accept.

2. Compost Compost is the nutrient bridge between livestock output and crop demand. In a functioning farm organism, nothing leaves the farm that does not need to — all plant material not harvested, all manure, all kitchen and processing waste returns to the compost system. The composting preparations (502–507) regulate decomposition; the goal is a fully humified compost that introduces biology into the soil without releasing raw ammonia or triggering nutrient leaching.

Compost targets in the biodynamic system:

• Temperature: 55–65°C through the thermophilic phase (hot enough to kill pathogens and weed seed, not so hot as to destroy all fungi).
• C:N ratio: 25–30:1 at building; this means balancing carbon-rich material (straw, wood chip, dried plant material) with nitrogen-rich material (manure, fresh green material).
• Moisture: 50–60% — the pile should feel damp but not drip when squeezed.
• Turning: once at 6–8 weeks, after thermophilic phase; a second turn at 12–16 weeks.
• Maturity: 4–6 months for field-ready compost; fine, earthy smell, no identifiable raw materials remaining.

3. Crops and Soil The crop system should include:

• A diverse rotation that covers the soil year-round (living roots feed the food web; bare soil is biologically costly).
• At least one legume in rotation per cycle for nitrogen fixation.
• A proportion of the farm in permanent cover — hedgerows, woodlands, pasture — that generates the fungal-dominated biology that the farm organism depends on.
• Green manures and cover crops as the fertility bridge between livestock compost and crop demand where the livestock system alone is insufficient.

4. Habitat and Farm Individuality The farm organism has a boundary — typically a hedgerow perimeter, woodland edge, or other permanent vegetation — that gives the farm its own biological identity and moderates the interaction with adjacent land. This is not merely ecological correctness; it is the practical mechanism by which a farm develops its own pest pressure, its own microclimatic conditions, and its own resilience.

Transition

Moving from organic or conventional to biodynamic: sequencing preparations and practices.

Most farmers who adopt biodynamics arrive from one of three positions: fully conventional (using synthetics), organic (no synthetics, but preparations not yet in use), or partially biodynamic (some preparations used, but not the full system). The transition pathway differs for each.

Managing the yield transition:

The transition dip is real. Crops adapted to soluble nitrogen show yield decline in years 1–3 as the biology recovers and begins supplying mineralised nutrients. This is normal and not evidence that the system is failing. The conventional approach is to hold synthetic inputs constant while adding biological inputs — a slower transition but lower financial risk. The more ambitious approach (replacing synthetics quickly) produces faster biological recovery but a sharper yield dip.

Match your pace to your financial resilience:

• If margins are tight: hold synthetics constant; add biology alongside for 2–3 seasons; reduce synthetics only when biological indicators improve (earthworm counts, OM trend, crop response).
• If margins allow: reduce synthetics aggressively in Year 1; accept the dip; recover in Year 3–4.

Demeter Certification — overview:

Demeter is the primary biodynamic certification body. Requirements beyond organic:
