The question is not whether your farming practice is good — it is whether a certificate will convert that practice into better prices, better market access, or better customer trust, and whether those gains outweigh the cost and administrative burden of achieving it. Get that question answered first. Then, if certification makes sense, this skill walks you through the process for each major scheme.

The right answer for many farms is to farm to the standard and not certify — especially at early stages. The right answer for others is that certification is the single most important commercial decision they will make. This skill helps you tell which situation you are in.

Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) — IFOAM The PGS model, documented and promoted by IFOAM, is the most important alternative to third-party certification for small and direct-market farms. PGS schemes use peer inspection and community verification rather than commercial inspectors. Step 1: Identify your current and target market channel.

Certification provides:

• Legal protection for labelling claims (you cannot call yourself organic without certification in most jurisdictions)

Organic Process

Guides the farmer through the organic certification process — from application to first certified sale.

Organic certification is a process with defined stages. The key insight: it is not difficult, but it requires systematic record-keeping from the first day of transition. Farmers who start records late spend disproportionate time reconstructing them.

Stage 1: Choose your certification body.

In most countries, multiple approved certifiers operate under the same national organic standard. The standard is the same; the service, costs, and administrative experience differ.

Stage 2: Begin the transition period — and start records now.

The transition period (typically 2–3 years, depending on scheme and previous land management) begins when you formally apply and stop using prohibited substances — not when you receive your certificate. Records must demonstrate prohibited substance non-use for the full transition period.

What to record from Day 1:

Stage 3: Submit the application.

A typical organic application includes:

• Farm map with field references and areas
• Field history (inputs for the last 3 years — longer if you have them)
• Organic management plan (what you will grow, how you will manage fertility and pests)
• System description (livestock, storage, equipment that contacts organic produce)

The certifier reviews your application and schedules an initial inspection.

Stage 4: Initial inspection.

An inspector visits the farm and checks:

• That the records match the land management described
• That equipment and storage used for organic produce cannot be contaminated by conventional materials (if mixed farm)
• That prohibited substances are not present in stores
• That livestock requirements are met (if applicable)

Inspections are typically annual thereafter, with some certifiers conducting unannounced spot checks.

Stage 5: Transition period management.

During the transition period, you farm to the organic standard but cannot sell produce as organic. Key management priorities:

• Establish the record-keeping system — it is the most time-consuming compliance requirement
• Review the permitted inputs list: the certifier will provide it, or consult the Soil Association Input Checker (UK) or OMRI list (US)
• Plan fertility for the transition: you cannot use synthetic N, P, K but must maintain crop productivity. This is where biological fertility investment (composting, cover crops, green manures) becomes immediately practical
• Manage the cash flow gap: transition period income is at conventional prices; costs may be similar to organic production. Budget for this explicitly

Permitted inputs — key rules across most schemes:

Soil health note: The organic standard prohibits the inputs most damaging to soil biology — soluble synthetics and most synthetic pesticides. Biodynamic Process

Guides the farmer through Demeter biodynamic certification — what it requires beyond organic, and how to prepare.

Demeter certification is the most demanding mainstream agricultural certification available. It requires meeting the full organic standard plus a set of additional biodynamic requirements. It also commands the highest premiums of any agricultural certification in most markets. The question is whether you are ready for what it requires.

What Demeter requires beyond organic:

The certification pathway:

Step 1: Achieve organic certification first (or simultaneously). Demeter requires organic compliance as a baseline. Most farmers certify organic and then convert to Demeter.

Step 2: Begin using the biodynamic preparations. Horn manure (500) and horn silica (501) are the field sprays; preparations 502–507 are the compost preparations. You can purchase prepared preparations from a Demeter-approved supplier or a biodynamic association while you learn to make your own.

Step 3: Apply to Demeter through your national Demeter association. The main bodies:

Is Demeter right for you?

Demeter suits farms where:

Demeter is not suited to:

Regenerative Certification

Navigates the Regenerative Organic Certified standard and equivalent schemes — what they require, who they suit, and how to pursue them.

Regenerative certification is the fastest-growing segment of agricultural certification. It is also the most demanding — and the least standardised. Understanding which standard you are being asked to meet (or are choosing to pursue) is the first step.

The main regenerative certification schemes:

Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) — the most rigorous:

ROC has three pillars and three tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold):

1. Soil health — based on Rodale Institute protocols; requires improvement in soil organic matter, biological activity, and erosion over time. Specifically: soil carbon must increase or be demonstrably maintained at a high level.

2. Animal welfare — exceeds USDA organic; pasture-raised requirements; no feedlots; emphasis on natural behaviours.

3. Farmer and worker fairness — fair wages, safe working conditions, farmer economic resilience.

To pursue ROC:

• Step 1: Achieve USDA organic certification (or equivalent national organic certification). ROC is built on top of organic — you cannot certify ROC without being organic first.
• Step 2: Complete a ROC self-assessment against the three-pillar framework.
• Step 3: Apply through a ROC-approved certifier.

• Step 5: Soil health baseline measurement at entry; re-measurement at each certification renewal.

Land to Market — Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV):

Land to Market does not prescribe practices — it measures outcomes. An independent ecological assessor measures soil health, plant biodiversity, and water cycle function against a baseline, and certifies improvement over time. This means a farm that achieves ecological improvement through any means — conventional or regenerative — can access the certification. It is particularly suited to grazing operations that practice holistic planned grazing.

Key practical point: EOV assessment is based on site-specific ecological monitoring. The farm does not need to change practices to a prescribed list — it needs to demonstrate measurable ecological improvement.

What regenerative certification adds for buyers:

Organic certification tells a buyer what you did NOT do (no synthetics, no GMO). Regenerative certification tells them what IS improving — soil carbon, biodiversity, water cycle function. For buyers making climate and biodiversity claims, this distinction is increasingly commercially important.

Who does regenerative certification suit?

Strong fit:

• Farms already certified organic seeking market differentiation
• Farms with strong soil health improvement story and data to support it
• Farms supplying to food brands with sustainability and provenance commitments
• Grazing operations with holistic planned grazing data (Land to Market)

Poor fit:

Soil health note: This is the one certification where Ingham's food web metrics matter directly. ROC's soil health pillar rewards farms that can demonstrate biological progress — increasing fungal populations, improving earthworm counts, growing microbial biomass. A farm investing in soil biology is building its ROC certification case as a by-product of farming well.

Participatory Guarantee

Evaluates and sets up a Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) as a lower-cost alternative to third-party certification.

A Participatory Guarantee System is a locally organised, peer-verified certification alternative. Instead of paying a commercial inspector to verify your practice, your farm is inspected by other farmers in the same network, and the group collectively guarantees each member's compliance. Customers trust the group, not the inspector.

PGS is recognised by IFOAM (the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements) as a valid organic verification mechanism and is widely used in Latin America, India, and parts of Europe. It is growing in use in the UK and USA among small direct-market farms.

When PGS works:

PGS delivers equivalent customer trust to third-party certification in direct-market contexts:

PGS does NOT substitute for third-party certification when:

The cost difference is substantial:

A PGS scheme typically costs £100–£300/year in membership and peer inspection time, versus £500–£3,000+ for third-party certification. For a farm earning £30–50k revenue, this is the difference between certification being a sensible investment and a serious overhead.

How to join or establish a PGS scheme:

Joining an existing scheme (preferred):

1. Find the nearest active PGS scheme — IFOAM's directory, local agroecology networks, or Landworkers' Alliance (UK) are starting points.
2. Apply for membership and complete a self-declaration of compliance with the scheme's standards.
3. Receive a peer inspection from another scheme member — this is usually a half-day farm visit.
4. Attend the group inspection of other members' farms — you are both inspected and inspector.
5. Group approval or rejection is collective.

Establishing a new scheme (if none exists locally):

A functional PGS requires a minimum of 4–6 farms to operate meaningfully. The steps:

1. Identify 4–6 local farms farming to similar standards who would benefit from mutual verification.
2. Agree on the standard you are all certifying to — typically aligned with national organic standards.

What to tell customers about PGS:

The most important communication task is explaining why PGS provides meaningful assurance. The key points:
