Core model

Apparent generosity may form an obligatory circulation:

give → create/renew relation → receive → acknowledge relation → reciprocate → redistribute status and obligation

The exchanged thing is not socially inert. It may carry the giver's identity, honor, spiritual force, lineage, claim, memory, or relationship, so possession does not end attachment.

Working procedure

1. Define the exchange unit: object, service, hospitality, knowledge, child-rearing, ritual, recognition, or sacrifice.
2. Identify parties at both individual and collective levels; gifts often pass between houses, clans, institutions, or generations.
3. Trace the three obligations—giving, receiving, returning—and the sanction for refusing each.
4. Map timing, equivalence, escalation, circulation, witnesses, ritual, destruction, and redistribution.
5. Analyze simultaneous legal, economic, religious, moral, political, aesthetic, and spatial effects.
6. Test alternative explanations: price exchange, contract, charity, coercion, tribute, tax, mutual aid, strategic signaling.
7. Ask how the exchange turns hostility into alliance or generosity into hierarchy.
8. State where the Maussian analogy fits and where modern institutions differ.

Decision rules

• Do not call something a gift only because no money changed hands.
• Do not call it free only because repayment is delayed, indirect, collective, or incommensurable.
• Refusal to receive can reject alliance; refusal to give can deny recognition; failure to return can lose honor or autonomy.
• Reciprocity need not be immediate, equal, bilateral, material, or peaceful.
• Potlatch combines generosity with rivalry, destruction, rank, and political domination.
• Market, money, credit, interest, and contract do not necessarily replace gift relations; they may coexist or grow from different institutional mixtures.
• “Hau” is an indigenous explanation used by Mauss to theorize obligation; do not treat it as a universal occult mechanism.
• Ethical application requires voluntary participation, transparent expectations, and protection against debt traps or coerced gratitude.
