The teacher-researcher is the principal instrument. Systematic reflection is both a research practice and a professional way of life, but reflection must be supported by records, comparison, and explicit reasoning.

Working procedure

1. Begin with a concrete educational difficulty, episode, or contradiction the practitioner needs to understand.
2. Explain why meaning, process, context, or participants' perspectives require qualitative inquiry.
3. Choose a feasible form—case study, ethnographic inquiry, action-oriented inquiry, narrative/life history, or another justified design.
4. Define access, participant selection, researcher role, consent, privacy, and likely effects on teacher–student power relations.
5. Combine interviews, observation, and material evidence where each contributes something distinct.
6. Record promptly; transcribe or organize data with an audit trail.
7. Analyze during collection by coding, grouping, comparing, memoing, seeking exceptions, and revising questions.
8. Move from description to concepts and theory without outrunning the evidence.
9. Write a transparent report that connects practical context, method, evidence, interpretation, and implications.

Decision rules

• Teacher research should answer situated practice problems; it need not imitate professional research's pursuit of broad general laws.
• Practical relevance does not excuse vague questions, selective anecdotes, or missing records.
• Interview accounts, observed behavior, and material traces are different evidence—not interchangeable confirmations.
• Children and students require age-appropriate assent, guardian/institutional processes where applicable, and protection from grading or authority pressure.
• Focus groups reveal interaction and shared language but cannot guarantee private disclosure.
• Observation notes must distinguish event, participant interpretation, and researcher inference.
• Theory is an explanatory relationship developed from evidence, not a quotation added to the discussion.
• Do not generalize beyond the case without a clear argument about context and transferability.
