Identification Defense

Attacks an empirical design the way a demanding referee or committee member will, grades every answer as strong, adequate, weak or missing, and then builds the argument, the diagnostic exhibit or the honest concession that answers each attack. Covers difference-in-differences and event studies, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity, matching and selection on observables, synthetic control, and the cross-cutting questions about clustering, attrition, measurement and power that apply to every design. Produces a defense table mapping each objection to its response and the exhibit that carries it, a verdict on whether the design survives at the venue targeted, and short spoken answers for a seminar or viva. Use this skill when someone asks whether their design is identified, asks to defend a difference-in-differences or an instrument, wonders what a committee will ask about identification, is preparing for a defense, seminar or submission, or is choosing between designs. Trigger also on vague requests
