Opportunity Assessment
Overview
Not every idea deserves a roadmap slot. Opportunity assessment creates a lightweight, consistent way to compare options and kill weak ones early.
When to Use
- Intake of new feature or product ideas
- Comparing multiple strategic bets
- Deciding whether to start discovery
- Portfolio-level prioritization inputs
Assessment Dimensions
- Problem strength — How painful / frequent / underserved?
- Market / reach — Who is affected and how large is the opportunity?
- Strategic fit — Does it advance company and product strategy?
- Differentiation — Can we win in a meaningful way?
- Feasibility — Technical and operational realism
- Viability — Business model and cost to serve
- Confidence — How strong is the evidence?
Principles
- Prefer comparable structure across opportunities
- Separate evidence from enthusiasm
- Make “no” and “not now” acceptable outcomes
- Keep assessments short enough to do often
Verification
- Recommendation (pursue / discover / defer / kill) is explicit
- Key risks and unknowns are listed
- Assessment is understandable to stakeholders
