Persona Development
Overview
Personas are decision tools, not art projects. Good personas capture goals, behaviors, constraints, and contexts that change what you build and how you prioritize.
When to Use
- Synthesizing user research into shareable artifacts
- Aligning product, design, and go-to-market on target users
- Guiding prioritization and UX decisions
- Onboarding new team members to the customer base
Core Elements
- Segment and distinguishing characteristics
- Goals and jobs-to-be-done
- Behaviors and workflows
- Pain points and constraints
- Environment and context of use
- Success criteria from the user’s perspective
- (Optional) Quote or evidence anchors from research
Principles
- Base personas on evidence, not stereotypes
- Prefer fewer, sharper personas over many vague ones
- Focus on differences that change product decisions
- Keep personas living — update when research warrants it
- Avoid fictional biographies that don’t affect decisions
Verification
- Personas are traceable to research or data
- They help resolve real product trade-offs
- Teams actually reference them in discussions
