Product Strategy
Overview
Product strategy answers: Who are we serving, what value do we create, how do we win, and how does that create business value? It is the bridge between company strategy and the roadmap.
When to Use
- Defining or refreshing product direction
- Evaluating major bets or pivots
- Aligning leadership and teams on priorities
- Writing strategy narratives or strategy memos
Core Elements
- Vision and strategic intent
- Target customer / segment and their jobs-to-be-done
- Value proposition and differentiation
- Business model and success metrics
- Key bets and non-goals
- Constraints and strategic trade-offs
Principles
- Strategy is choice — explicitly state what you will not do
- Anchor in customer value and business outcomes, not features
- Make the logic falsifiable; good strategy can be proven wrong
- Keep it short enough that people actually use it
- Revisit when evidence or context changes significantly
Verification
- A new team member can explain the strategy in a few sentences
- Trade-offs and non-goals are explicit
- Success metrics are defined at the strategic level
