User Guide and Manual
Overview
User guides succeed when a person can achieve their goal without contacting support. Focus on tasks, not features.
When to Use
- Product user manuals
- Help center / knowledge base articles
- Onboarding guides for end users
- Feature how-to content
Principles
- Organize by user goals and tasks, not by internal system structure
- Use numbered steps for procedures
- Show expected results after key actions
- Include screenshots or visuals only when they add clarity
- Write in plain language; avoid jargon or define it
- Provide troubleshooting for common failure points
- Keep articles focused — one main task per article when possible
Useful Patterns
- Goal-oriented title (“How to export your data”)
- Short introduction + prerequisites
- Step-by-step instructions
- Tips, warnings, and notes
- Related articles / next steps
Verification
- A first-time user can complete the task by following the guide
- Steps are in the correct order and complete
- Common errors are addressed
