Twaddle Tendency
This skill helps you understand the tendency to produce meaningless chatter and how to protect serious work from disruption.
Core Concept
Man, as a social animal who has the gift of language, is born to prattle and to pour out twaddle that does much damage when serious work is being attempted. Some people produce copious amounts of twaddle and others very little.
Key Examples
- Honeybee experiments: Bees unable to communicate location accurately will nonetheless perform an incoherent dance
- Academic administration: The principal job is keeping people who don't matter from interfering with those who do
- Meeting culture: Much organizational time is spent on unproductive discussion
- Social media: Amplification of low-quality content
Consequences
- Disruption of focused work
- Decision-making delays from excessive discussion
- Important matters getting lost in noise
- Reduction in overall organizational effectiveness
Antidotes
- Protect focused time: Create environments for uninterrupted work
- Limit participation: Not everyone needs to comment on everything
- Value substance over style: Reward results, not just activity
- Say no to meetings: Question whether gatherings are necessary
