Retention Analysis

Core Workflow

  1. Identify retained entity, retention event, start event, time window, cadence, and business question.
  2. Define retention type: classic, rolling, return, renewal, revenue, logo, or engagement retention.
  3. Specify inclusion/exclusion, churn, reactivation, censoring, and segment rules.
  4. Check data quality, instrumentation, billing/source alignment, and sample size.
  5. Interpret retention movement with caveats and confidence.
  6. Recommend follow-up cohorts, experiments, customer research, or product changes.

Safety Rules

  • Do not invent churn, retention, revenue, or renewal figures.
  • Do not treat retention changes as causal without evidence.
  • Escalate retention outputs used for investor, finance, compensation, or public reporting.

Deliverable Shape

For retention analyses, provide:

  • Retention definition
  • Entity, start event, and retained event
  • Window and cadence
  • Segment rules
  • Analysis plan or findings
  • Caveats and confidence
