Usage

Purpose

A network IDS/IPS watches traffic for malicious patterns — but out of the box it either drowns you in false positives or, tuned too aggressively, goes blind to real attacks. The value is entirely in the tuning and placement. This skill covers deploying network detection where it sees the right traffic and tuning it so alerts are trustworthy, so the sensor becomes a real detection source rather than noise everyone ignores.

When to use it

Deploying Suricata/Snort/Zeek, or fixing an existing sensor that's either alert-flooding or suspiciously quiet. It's the network-layer feed into the SOC and detection-engineering domains.

IDS vs IPS

• IDS (detection) — watches and alerts, out-of-band (on a SPAN/TAP). Safe: a false positive is noise, not an outage. Doesn't block.
• IPS (prevention) — inline, can block. Powerful but risky: a false positive drops legitimate traffic and can cause an outage, so IPS blocking rules need higher confidence and careful rollout.

Procedure

1. Place the sensor where it sees the traffic that matters. A sensor on a segment with no interesting traffic detects nothing; one drowning in traffic it can't process drops packets. Position at chokepoints — the perimeter, between segments (east-west), in front of crown-jewel zones. Coverage gaps are silent blind spots.
2. Start in detection (IDS) mode even if you want IPS — observe what the rules fire on against real traffic before you let anything block. This prevents a bad rule from causing an outage on day one.
3. Tune out false positives systematically — the core work. Identify the noisy rules (a few rules usually generate most alerts), and for each decide: is it a true detection that's just chatty, a rule that doesn't apply to your environment, or a benign pattern to suppress? Suppress or disable the genuinely irrelevant, tune thresholds on the chatty:

   # find the loudest rules, then tune/suppress the irrelevant ones
   # (don't blanket-disable — you can tune a rule to your environment instead)
   

4. Don't tune yourself blind. The opposite failure: suppressing so aggressively that real attacks are silenced. Keep high-value detections even if they occasionally false-positive, and track what you've disabled so you know your coverage gaps.
5. Use curated, updated rule sets (ET Open/Pro, Talos) and keep them current — and map detections to ATT&CK so you know what you cover (ties into detection-engineering).
6. Promote to IPS blocking selectively — only high-confidence, well-tested rules should block inline; keep the rest in detection mode. Roll out blocking gradually.
7. Wire alerts into the SOC — an IDS alerting into a void isn't detection; route to the triage workflow.

Reading the deployment

• Thousands of alerts, everyone ignoring them = alert fatigue; the sensor is effectively off because nobody trusts it. Tune the loud rules down — this is the most common IDS failure.
• Suspiciously quiet sensor = either great tuning or, more often, blind spots (bad placement, over-suppression, or not seeing the traffic). Verify it detects a test attack; silence isn't safety.
• A few rules generating most of the noise = the high-leverage tuning targets; fixing a handful reclaims the signal.
• IPS blocking on low-confidence rules = outage risk from false positives; move shaky rules to detection-only and keep only high-confidence ones inline.
• Alerts firing into a void (no SOC routing) = detection that detects nothing actionable. Wire it into triage.
• Well-placed, tuned sensor with trusted alerts routed to the SOC = the working state.

Pitfalls

• Deploying default rules and walking away. Untuned, it floods and gets ignored; the tuning is the work.
• Tuning until it's silent. Over-suppression trades noise for blindness — you stop seeing real attacks. Keep high-value detections and track what you disabled.
• Bad placement. A sensor that can't see the important traffic (or is overwhelmed and dropping it) detects nothing regardless of rules.
• IPS blocking too eagerly. Inline blocking on a false positive is an outage. Start in detection mode; promote only high-confidence rules.
• Alerts with nowhere to go. Route to SOC triage, or the detection is theatre.
