Summarize — faithful condensation of text, files, emails, and page trees
Overview
Turn any source into a faithful, fit-for-purpose summary. This skill is an orchestrator plus a discipline, not a new parser: it (1) detects intent and picks an output shape, (2) fetches the source by composing existing skills, (3) condenses with a map-reduce roll-up when the source exceeds context, and (4) applies a strict no-fabrication rule. The summarization-specific value lives here; the fetching and chunking live in the skills it calls.
Step 1 — Detect intent (what KIND of summary)
Pick the output shape from the request, or ask one quick question if genuinely ambiguous. Default when unspecified: TL;DR + key points.

Step 2 — Identify the source and fetch it (compose, don't reimplement)

If a source needs auth/config that isn't present, say so plainly and offer the paste path as the immediate fallback — don't fail silently.
Step 3 — Condense (map-reduce when over context)
Small source (fits in context): summarize directly into the chosen shape.
Large source OR a multi-item set (Confluence tree, long thread, big file): map-reduce, preserving provenance.
- Map — summarize each unit (page / message / chunk) into a compact, attributed intermediate note. Accumulate intermediates in a temp file (see
large-file-analysis for the position-tracked accumulation pattern) so nothing is lost across passes.
- Reduce — summarize the intermediate notes into the final shape. Roll up duplicates, order by importance, and keep each surviving point's origin label.
- Report coverage — state what was covered (N pages / M messages) and what was deliberately dropped or truncated. Never present a partial roll-up as complete (the
large-file-analysis "no silent truncation" discipline).
Optional fan-out (HO authoring gate — feature-detected, portable fallback)
The map phase over an independent set (a Confluence subtree, a batch of files) is embarrassingly parallel. When — and ONLY when — this skill runs in a Claude Code main-loop context with the Workflow tool available, the map phase MAY fan out as a pipeline(units, summarize-stage) for speed. This is optional and feature-detected:
- Gate on
capabilities.workflow_tool via probe.sh get capabilities.workflow_tool AND confirm you are in the main loop (the Workflow tool is in your own tool list — references/context-detection.md in env-adoption). Subagent/Codex/Copilot contexts cannot fan out.
- The serial map-reduce above is the portable fallback and the default. Every host (Codex CLI, Copilot, an older Claude, a subagent) runs it serially with identical output. Never make correctness depend on the fan-out.
This composition (optional + feature-detected + serial-fallback) is exactly what the research-for-skills HO-1..HO-7 authoring gate requires; summarize is a reference example of it.
Step 4 — Output
Render the chosen shape (templates in references/output-shapes.md). Always:
- Lead with the answer (TL;DR / bottom line first — readers skim).
- Keep numbers/names/dates verbatim from the source.
- Attach provenance for load-bearing claims (inline
[source: …] or a compact "Sources" footer for roll-ups).
- State coverage + anything dropped for large sources.
- Match the requested length budget; if you had to cut to fit it, say what class of detail you cut.
Integration notes
- AMY (pa-v2, task #163) is a primary future caller: "summarize my unread emails", "digest this Confluence space", "minutes from yesterday's thread" are AMY routines that invoke this skill with the Outlook/Confluence adapters. Keep this skill standalone and portable so it also works from a bare CLI — AMY supplies the fetched content or the auth; summarize supplies the engine + discipline.
- Does not duplicate: fetching/auth (those skills own it), research synthesis across many web sources (
web-research/deep-research — use those when the task is "research X", not "summarize this given source"), or knowledge-base compression on ingest (wiki owns that).
